Whimper of an ending, but still a journey worth taking
A young Chinese woman who runs a document-shredding firm. A pharmacy company's vice-president who seems to be in a panic. An old Wall Street tycoon who dislikes being trifled with and has a way of making people regret it. A retired policeman and his scarred (both physically and emotionally) son. A Mafia-connected psychopath. And two dead Mexican girls, killed in a way that's clearly meant to send a message. How all these people connect is the joy of Colin Harrison's newest thriller, which is set against the background of post-9/11 insider trading scandals and the concerns over the teetering economy. As usual for Harrison, he mixes social commentary nicely in with the thriller plotting, tying his characters' motivations inextricably to the place and time from which they come and making his novel all the more contemporary and relevant for it. The plot of The Finder is more simple than you might expect, and Harrison lays all the cards on the table surprisingly early, which renders the book's conclusion not as thrilling as you might hope, feeling more like a foregone conclusion as all of the Chekhov's guns laid throughout the book finally go off. Still, The Finder makes for a solid, intelligent thriller, one that plays nicely off of the tensions of the time. And even with the foreshadowed ending, Harrison constructs his book well-enough to keep it enthralling, even as you're aware that everything is just kind of unwinding according to plan at the end. It may be a whimper and not a bang that ends the book, but the journey there is still worth taking.

Has he shot his bolt?
In Bodies Electric, and to a slightly lesser degree Afterburn, Colin Harrison created two of the darkest, grimmest, most enthralling and original noir novels. His ability to evoke the dark side of humanity in the blood-spattered, exhaust fume filled NYC jungle in these two books is unequaled. His atmosphere, settings and dialogue ("You is trouble coming and trouble going") are hypnotizing, and his weaving of the history and society of the city and capitalism creates a nightmare, but extremely realistic, atmosphere.

His other books are frankly not as good. While each one has its moments, generally of a grim and apocalyptic variety, the stories are far less well conceived and delivered. Finder meanders off into a feel good happy ending, which wouldn't necessarily be bad did not the entire story deal in pain, sociopathy, corruption of every kind and the worst of human nature. It just seems like he whacked it out as "just another book",instead of the cris de coeur of his two masterpieces.

lousy plot and structure, terribly written, a total disappointment
i was once a loyal colin harrison's reader, but such loyalty was ruined almost completely after this 'finder'.what a let-down! i struggled to the middle and finally realized that i couldn't read along anymore. the 'ray' guy created by harrison this time simply won't hold together. a veteran soldier and fighter, yet became such a lamer and wimpy, witless and timid guy when tried to solve the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. the structure of this book was so poor that had continuously forced me out of focus. there were so many unnecessary uninteresting paragraphs, sentences, descriptions littered among pages that just too many and too much for me to go on. i dropped this book on p.149, and considered a complete waste of my time on those pages.

Native Brooklyn
I had not read any of the author's work until this past week and admit to having purchased it on the run.But was pleasantly surprised at his plot and execution.The fact that the venue for his plot takes place in my home town and the two neighborhoods I have grown up in and currently live in went a long way to spark my interest to see if he got it right.The characters were true to form; the neighborhoods and their environs were spot on.A fast and compelling read, perfect for a long trip.Highly recommend it for any Brooklyn native or not!

A lot more literary than thriller
A taught story, interesting characters, and a slew of cleverly crafted sentences make this one of the better thrillers I have read. A horrific murder takes place, and the story takes off deftly linking together a pharmaceutical executive, a hero with a tragic past, and a group of Chinese investors who have found a nifty way to profit off the stock market. But even without the plot, Harrison is so good at writing about the small details that you can see, hear, and smell everything that is taking place. Smarty mystery
Stately plump, Harrison Hunt enters into a town where murder is as common as literary references high and low sprinkled surreptitiously.People are taken out one after another and each one is unexpected and strangely hilarious. And who knew there were so many delightful ways to die? You will hone your sleuth skills while brushing up on your Shakespeare in this yarn.
Scared? You bet. I feared that I might miss the next double entandre!
Smart? A phd arrived with this volume.
Clever? It was so clever, I read it three times and each time was surprised by the ending!
Funny? Multiple murders, I ask you!
Seriously it was a treat and very highly recommended.

Mayhem Behind The Scenes
Like the best of British suspense or stylish movie mysteries from the Thirties & Forties, this story looks into the darkness lurking behind the most ordinary, otherwise cheerful circumstances. In this case, pretty, tree-lined Brookhaven plays host to a series of disturbing demises. Figuring out Whodunnit is bristly theatre maven Harrison Hunt, in town to cast & direct a stage play but, instead, forced by circumstance into finding a killer.

If you're up on show biz/theatre trivia, you might find yourself catching the killer before Harrison Hunt does. Then again, even with the clues right before your eyes, you'll probably be as surprised as I was when everything came clear in the tense, final pages. If this is the first Harrison Hunt mystery, I for one hope it's the first in a series.

May Was Never So Intriguing!
I'm pretty good at figuring out mysteries....not this time!FIVE DAYS IN MAY:THE BROOKFIELD MURDERS is a book I'll want to read over and over again.I COULD NOT put this book down!The characters are real and interesting, the plot is always turning, and the added bonus of getting a behind-the-scenes view of the theatre world is a delight!A MUST for any theatre or mystery fan!

Great Book
I recently discovered Sue Harrison.She only wrote 6 books, but they are great.Her stories transport you to the time she is writing about, the stories flow effortlessly, and her characters are fully fleshed and very real.I highly recommend this author and all of her books.

Enchanting and Alluring
Sue Harrison is one of the best respectful writers of Native American lure that I have read and I have read countless books on the subject.
This book is part of trilogy about Alaskan Natives who are story tellers. You will leave your world and find yourself caught up in their drama, loves, and happiness of a world abandoned in the past. I don't want to spoil the plot but this novel is beautifully written and I suggest you read all three beginning with book one.

Good read
Found it confusing at first.It seemed to drift away from the original story leaving questions unanswered but this book did become very interesting!It kept me guessing and ended up being a two-day read because I couldn't put it down.It was also kind of confusing that this book suddenly included a different group of story tellers as the people telling the story your reading. This pattern is continued in the next book and becomes more clear as to why the books are writen as they are.Highly recommend anything by Harrison! ... Read more

No Narnia!
What middle school kid doesn't dream about finding a magical gate to another land?Jack Finney does it but doesn't quite find a benign Hobbiton;he discovers a darker place. Aiden James creates an amazing fantasy world, full of both menace and marvelous things. While we know our narrator escapes this forgotten Eden as he is telling the story years after the events, there is such suspense that I chewed off all my nails!A great read; can't wait for part 2!

This one is not to be "Forgotten."
The way that Aiden James tells this story will keep you wanting for more.His writing style is so descriptive, you lose yourself into his world. I appreciated the way he intertwined his characters.As I was reading this novel, I felt like I knew what was going to happen, but was never correct as the twist and turns always keep you on your toes.

Superb!
As an action enthusiast, I would have normally passed on by. However, by recommendation of a friend I gave "The Forgotten Eden" a chance... Blown away by the energy and onslaught of twists and turns within the plot, I was unable to put it down. This amazing creation has broadened my horizons regarding the genre of books that I read. Hats off to A. James for a job well done! Way to raise the bar...

The Aiden James 'Chill Ride' Continues!
James has a keen eye for detail and an uncanny knack for scaring the hell out of me. We are watching a master at work. THE RAVEN MOCKER is a nearly perfect thriller. Ghost stories don't get any better than this.

What a great read! Caught myself even reading this during my work hours. Scary. Sexy. Starts off with a strange set of never-before-seen skeletal remains and takes off from there. Many twists and turns. Great descriptive writing in a hair-raising plot. At times I had to make sure my dog was in the same room as I read this book. Hoping for a sequel. It certainly lends itself for one.

Excellent!
This was a very easy book to read and I couldn't hardly put it down after I started it.It's interesting, has a little romance in it, some historical references to it, as well as some stuff about indians and rituals.It was suspenseful and a real page-turner.I liked it a lot and would recommend it to any one of my friends.

Scary As Hell

Solid Ghost Story
Visiting the Smokie Mountains, Miriam and David Hobbs find a strange souvenir: a little bag labeled "Allie Mae's Treasures" containing various things including a broken tooth.David brings the bag with him home to Colorado, where unexplained sounds, chills and moving objects begin to plague the family. David has nightmares of Allie Mae as the violence escalates, so he takes the bag back to Tennessee in the hopes of placating the spirit.

I found the atmosphere of the story very creepy.As the ghost starts with annoyances then moves to violence you become really fearful for the characters.You really grow to like the Hobbs family and want the ghost to leave them alone!I like that we get actual explanations as to what is going on with the paranormal things and am quite pleased with the ending.A fun book, especially for Halloween! ... Adventure, Thrills, and a touch of Genius
I have been following this author for some time now, and I am impressed not only with Mr. James's ability to skillfully weave a multi-layered tale to perfection, but also with his penchant for presenting the unexpected twist in his stories.However, I must say that this novel, "The Devil's Paradise" takes all of those aspects I've admired to new heights.

This story will stay with me for years to come, and not only because of its literary brilliance.Long ago, I studied in Lithuania to become a priest, saved by my mother from a profession I would have loathed.Yet, it gave me a background in church history that has remained my passion despite the rejection of my original calling.Mr. James's fictional world is the first I have experienced that challenges me to think beyond my training to consider the true nature of God, as well as the reality behind the world's more violent religions.All of this is layered within a tightly written thriller involving Jack and Jeremy Kenney, the heroes from this book's prequel, The Forgotten Eden.

Fun Southern Mystery
Jimmy and Fiona Alea investigate ghosts, hauntings and other paranormal phenomena in Nashville, TN.When they, and their ghost hunting crew Nash-Vegas Paranormal, discover the brutal murder of famous country singer Candi Starr, it's traumatic but not going to derail their lives.But the death doesn't stop with just the singer.As the killer tears his way through Candi's Nashville connections, the Aleas must try to protect their friends and family, using Fiona's link to the spirit world to help stop the killer.

Side plots follow NVP's ghost investigations, which contribute to some of the creepier moments in the book, as well as the funnier ones.The image of a ghost hanging in a plantation home foyer will stay with you.Jimmy is a great narrator, mixing enough snarky comments in that you believe him as the tension rachets up.There's also a good sense of place; you can feel the humidity and hear the southern accents.

I really enjoyed this mystery.A bit Southern Gothic, a bit of rock and roll backstage, great jabs at corporate culture, some twisty serial killings and enough ghost-hunting specifics to give it a flavor of a procedural, this book is worth the read!

A really good read...
This was a really good read.Kept me interested so I found myself picking up the book often so I could find out what happens next.Finished it in two days because others tasks could wait.I consider myself a fairly intelligent person ergo I was convinced I had it figured out before reaching the end.Ha!I was surprised - did not see it coming.Likable characters and laughs along the way.- R.C.
