Product Description
Born the second son of the poet Earl of Surrey, Henry Howard was a Cambridge scholar, courtier and crypto-Catholic intriguer of suspicious repute; after falling in and out of favour with Elizabeth I, he eventually became the most important adviser to James I. Rather than view him through the prism of Jacobean court and political life, as the sparse previous critical attention has tended to do, this detailed reassessment places him in the context of scholarship on Renaissance humanism and its varied interactions with the different styles of argument and persuasion that Howard used, often to no avail, to improve his position during troubled times. The book will be of huge importance to all those interested in the intellectual, religious or political history of early modern England. ... Read more

Product Description

Immensely influential in literary history for his development of blank verse and the Petrarchian sonnet form in English, and as the first modern translator of Virgil, this selection reveals the Earl of Surrey to be a subtle and graceful poet and translator whose vigorous and faithful versions of the Aeneid continue to enrich the literary tradition. Reflecting an idealized world of aristocratic virtues of chivalry and honor, these poems have both a rich language and formal sophistication.

Product Description

A pioneering poet whose verse had a profound impact on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, Surrey was nevertheless branded by one contemporary as “the most foolish proud boy that is in England.” He was the heir of England’s premier nobleman, first cousin to two of Henry VIII’s wives---Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard---and best friend and brother-in-law to the King’s illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy.

Celebrated for his chivalrous deeds both on and off the battlefield, Surrey became, at only twenty-eight, the King’s Lieutenant General in France. He had his portrait painted more often than any other Tudor courtier, but his confident exterior masked insecurity and loneliness. A man of intriguing contradictions, Surrey was both law enforcer and law breaker, political conservative and religious reformer. The self-styled guardian of the traditional nobility, he was recklessly outspoken against the “new erected men” of the court. Cromwell was a “foul churl,” Paget a “mean creature,” and the problems that beset Henry VIII’s realm were, Surrey hinted, “the bitter fruit of false concupiscence.”

He witnessed and was inextricably caught up in all the major events of the reign: the break with Rome, the Pilgrimage of Grace, the Reformation, the executions of his two cousins, Henry’s French wars, and the brutal power struggle at the end of the reign to which he fell victim. His life, replete with drunken escapades, battlefield heroics, conspiracy, and courtroom drama, sheds new light on the opulence and artifice of a dazzling, but deadly, age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fills in some gaps
Although this book was very helpful in filling the gaps usually by general histories, I found the depiction of Earl of Surrey to be flat and two-dimensional.After finishing the book, I didn't really feel that I knew him much better than before I started. However, I did have a much clearer understanding of the difficult tightrope walked by every person who came into contact with the court during this stressful era. ... Product Description
Observant, imaginative, rich with literary allusions and historical echoes, James's travel writings are both literary masterpieces and unsurpassed guidebooks, here together for the first time in one authoritative set (in two volumes: Vol. 1, Great Britain and America: English Hours, The American Scene, Other Travels, and Vol. 2: The Continent: A Little Tour in France, Italian Hours, Other Travels), including four books and 32 essays, most previously uncollected. From a radically changing New York to Provence, Tuscany, and Rome, James visits all the places still on the traveler's itinerary, capturing radiant impressions of French countryside, the hauntingly desolate Suffolk coast, Florentine masterpieces, Venetian color and light. Joseph Pennell's exquisite drawings are reproduced from the original editions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of perception, understanding, and interpretation
Henry James' travel writings on France and Italy are a case study in fine arts perception, understanding and interpretation. He treats each new localeas a new horizon to be engaged, absorbed, and internalized through a hermeneutic of analogical interiority.Roaming within the halls and chambers of French and Italian architecture opens, through the text, new conduits for an understanding of the vast interiority that exists within the self-examining-self.James is a master at relating the space of each location with the thoughts, instincts, relational perceptions and education of the observer. Reading these texts is like engaging each site oneself and discussing with a learned and trusted friend about what one is experiencing, not just what one is seeing. The art work of Joseph Pennell is an amazing addition to these works and masterpieces on their own.Do yourself a favor and buy this book.It will be a cherished addition to your collection and a book you will pick-up time and again to walk with the "Master" through France and Italy as you discuss, reflect and remember literary events that where home to these marvels. If you happen to be planning a trip to either France or Italy, take this along to add a level of historical and cultural depth to your experience. Some of what you will read has disappeared into history, but what remains is a beautiful historical and cultural continuity with Henry James as your guide. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Whets the appetite for more but provides insufficient details
This is a good introduction to Henry Fonda's life, and, since it's told by Fonda, it obviously must be considered the definitive biography. Fonda was nothing like the characters he played, however--a point the actor stresses--and much of this book is devoted to providing an unflinching portrait of a man who was emotionally stunted for much of his life. He was supremely unsuccessful in marriage until his fifth and final wife, and after he became a father, he was cold and distant with Peter and Jane for many years. The book successfully captures Fonda's natural terseness and Midwestern reserve, and therein lies its chief shortcoming. We learn a little about various of Fonda's films, and more about various plays, but most of the book's personal revelations are about Fonda's relationships--with his friends, his wives and his children. Perhaps because Fonda was an intensely private man, the book hardly dishes about his costars and directors (other than John Ford), so this is by no means a traditional Hollywood biography.

You're left wishing for more detail, but Teichmann doesn't provide it. He includes only a single foto of Fonda's third wife Susan, and only one showing the face of his fourth wife Afdera. Curiously for a book about a movie star, this volume contains no filmography--a serious oversight. Some films aren't mentioned at all: Drums Along the Mohawk; The Male Animal; Hitchcock's The Wrong Man; Advise & Consent; Fail-Safe; The Best Man; The Battle of the Bulge; A Big Hand for the Little Lady; There Was a Crooked Man... (with Kirk Douglas); My Name is Nobody; and Midway. Despite Fonda's admiration for John Steinbeck (whose Grapes of Wrath provided Fonda his first Oscar nomination), altho' other Steinbeck works that Fonda played are mentioned, The Red Pony--which earned Fonda an Emmy nomination--isn't. But the biggest failing is that, although Fonda's 1980 Honorary Oscar is mentioned, his winning Best Actor for On Golden Pond in 1981 is not. Given that On Golden Pond occupies much of the book's final chapters, you'd think the publisher would have interrupted the press run to include this natural conclusion to Fonda's story and Teichmann's book.

Fonda died in 1982, nine months after the book came out (and a week after the paperback edition was published), but apparently sales were not strong enough to publish a second edition with details of his last years and his death. Knowing that he didn't outlive the book by very much, we're left hanging, wishing for a proper conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLYHenry Fonda Biography Worth Reading!!
This book is pure pleasure from beginning to end. It feels like returning home to a wonderful, favourite place after a long time away, to find the hearth fires lighted and the lovely, familiar house redolent with the aroma of the evening meal. The musical sound of loved one's voices can be heard in the next room as the fire crackles...This is a warm, intimate visit with Henry Fonda, beginning long before he was famous. It is written by Howard Teichmann, as the stories were shared with him by Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda had always refused requests in past to authourise a biography, but he came to like and trust Mr. Teichmann and they created a beautiful tableau together.

Their collaboration took place during the last two years of Henry Fonda's life. This time period was before, during and following the filming of "On Golden Pond." It covers the early years in New York City, where he shared quarters with Jimmy Stewart and many more people of the same era. It follows himthrough his career and his personal life and it is an incredibly authentic treatise. It pulls no punches and if you like Henry Fonda before reading his life story, you will never forget him after you read this book!

This is the quintessential biography for Henry Fonda, although, technically it is an autobiography. Whatever name you give it, it is one of my favourite books. There is not another book regarding him that comes close. This is a Winner!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Authobiography of Henry Fonda ever
Since Henry Fonda resisted almost all his life to share his private life with the public, this book of Howard Teichman is probably the one and only book, that helps you getting to know Henry Fonda. You know him from screen and stage, but who is the man behind the actor ? This book tells you not only how he started acting on stage and in movies. It also shows his private life , family life, his personality and how he saw the world. It is simply not to understand, why this book is out of print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work by famous scholar
I had the privilege of being Dr. William A. Sessions' research assistant at Georgia State University, and I have never seen, before or since, a work of such outstanding scholarly research written in his unique style of combining scholarship with human insight -- making this work accessible to all, and extremely useful to the academic community. It is a fascinating story, well told--possibly the first academic "page-turner."This important biography is written with such insight and so compellingly one cannot put it down.It is an extraordinary work by a brilliant scholar who is also a marvelous writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary view of the life of a noble Tudor poet.
The Earl of Surrey was the co-founder, along with Sir Thomas Wyatt, of modern English poetry; the whole procession from Spenser and Shakespeare down to Yeats and Eliot starts with Surrey and Wyatt.Surrey's mostnotable contributions were the creation of English blank verse and thedevelopment of the English sonnet from Italian models; without Surrey weshould not have Shakespeare as we know him.Surrey was also adistinguished soldier and a loving husband, who was executed for treason atage twenty-nine.

The nineteenth century produced two excellent lives ofSurrey, those of G. F. Nott and Edmond Bapst, the latter in French.Thetwentieth century had not done so well, as the principal accomplishment ofSurrey's 1938 biographer, Edwin Casady, was translating Bapst's discoveriesinto English.William Sessions swings the balance the other way, his HenryHoward, the Poet Earl of Surrey being a magnificent tour of Surrey's life, his poetry, and his world.

Sessions offers the first fully integratedbiography of Surrey, addressing his art, family, society, culture, religion, travels, and military career. The book is based on a massiveamount of research, both archival and geographical, for Sessions visitedvirtually every site of importance in Surrey's life. The illustrationsalone, some never published before or not properly identified, almostjustify the cost of the book.

Sessions corrects many key facts ofSurrey's unevenly documented career. He shows, for example, that Surreywas a moderate Protestant, whereas Nott, Bapst, and Casady simply assumethat Surrey shared their own religious views--an approach complicated bythe fact that Nott was a Protestant while the other two were Catholics. Getting Surrey's religion straight is absolutely essential to understandinga short life spent at the center of the escalating violence of the earlyReformation. Finally, Sessions uses the full texts of the originaldocuments concerning Surrey's downfall (instead of reading the publishedsummaries), thereby untangling much of the mystery that occurred amid thereligious strife, dynastic uncertainty, and naked ambition at the end ofthe reign of Henry VIII. ...
