Why should mathematics, the purest of sciences, have a history? Medieval mathematicians took little interest in the history of their discipline. Yet in the Renaissance the history of mathematics flourished. This book explores how Renaissance scholars recovered and reconstructed the origins of mathematics by tracing its invention in prehistoric Antiquity, its development by the Greeks, and its transmission to modern Europe via the works of Euclid, Theon and Proclus. The principal architects of this story -- the French philosopher and University of Paris reformer Peter Ramus, and his critic, the young Oxford astronomy lecturer Henry Savile – worked out diametrically opposed models for the development of the mathematical arts, models of historical progress and decline which mirrored each scholar’s larger convictions about the nature of mathematical thinking, the purpose of the modern university, and the potential of the human mind. Women in philosophy had been silenced since the days of the fourth-century Alexandrian woman philosopher and mathematician, Hypatia. With the establishment of the journal by the Society for Women in Philosophy (SWIP), feminist issues and philosophy were legitimized. The first three issues of the journal were actually published as special issues of Women's Studies International Forum. A Largely Forgotten Free Thought Classic That Deserves Rediscovery
This book was originally published in 1913--and it still packs a punch. What the author has done is to simply quote, sometimes at length, and then discuss, what prominent Christians have said about hell throughout the centuries. The effect of this exercise is to bring home, in a way difficult to avoid, the absurd and inhumane nature of hell-belief, and to wonder how it has been able to capture the imagination of so many for so long. An aspect of the book that I especially like is when the author turns to quotes from hymnals and literature (such as Shakespeare and Milton) to explore how hell is described in such texts. Lastly, the book's exquisite Victorian stylistic control, accompanied by a rakish irony and humor, makes it a pleasure to read. In places, the author reminded me of Mark Twain when he is at his most caustic toward religion. In a time of revived fundamentalism, I do hope others find this book, and give it a renewed circulation. It deserves it.
