5-0 out of 5 stars Fictional town, real emotions
The book has an introduction by John Irving.Leah is a fictional town.Thomas Williams was a longtime resident of New Hampshire. The author's introduction refers to his childhood practice of reading the Bible.

In "Goose Pond" a new widower visits Leah where he spent his youth and young married life.He kills a doe with a bow and arrow. In the next story it is observed that mothers have to be half policemen, half indentured servants. The ski instructor at the resort the mother and son end up in is past forty and over-weight.He thinks that he is too jaded to seriously pursue the mother of the story. When he gains the courage to go after the woman, Margaret, she is visited at the resort by her former husband who is particularly needy. The ski professional wonders what he has done in this world except have a pretty good time.

A teacher finds that he cannot enter the classroom. Then he destroys himself with a firearm. His obituary omits the information that he was a fairly good teacher until he tired of things. The stories are about people who survive just barely the collapse of snowforts, bad marriages, encounters with the past, disclosures of unease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at an American town.
Thomas Williams blends intricate prose with real skill for story-telling.His accounts of Leah bring the town to life, filling it with vibrant characters and a tangible spirit of the northeastern United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars A throwback book of men's short stories.
This is one of my favorite collection of short stories. If you like Hemingway's short stories and if you live or like to visit New England you will love these stories. ... Read more

Product Description
I am a great fan of Dr. Stephen Covey's wonderful book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In it, he teaches that the First Habit is to be PROACTIVE.

Dr. Covey explains that being proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. Being proactive is being "response-able;" able and willing to actively choose how you respond, act and behave, rather than just being reactive. This is the first step to achieving true independence.

Flying in Bolivian Amazonia in the ‘70s required us all to become proactive about our low altitude navigation.

This tells how we navigated over the 'featureless' jungle in Bolivia. ... Read more

Product Description
... Product Description
Mozart's piano sonatas form a richly diverse and significant part of his instrumental output and span much of his mature composing career, thereby representing a microcosm of the composer's changing style. Part I examines the contexts in which the sonatas were composed and performed, and reviews likely sources of influence. Part II concentrates on the genesis of the sonatas and the sources, which reveals important information about Mozart's compositional process. In Part III the musical style is studied from the standpoint of rhetoric--a discipline featured in numerous contemporary aesthetic and theoretical textbooks on music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest of all time
When I first read this book, many years ago, it moved me in ways I never thought a book could. It transported me, and still does, again and again and again. I grew to love the characters and cheer them on, cry with them, and dream of the life they led. Their stories have been a part of my life since this book was published. It's Mr. Irving's greatest and should I ever get to meet him, I will thank him.
I'm not a total fan of all Mr. Irving's work and shouldn't be considered a slave to it. I speak only for this book where, for the time he took to write it, he connected with my and so many others.
I could write volumes about this book. The sadness and death, the joy and perserverence, the love of family despite incredible hardships and outrageous happenings. Instead, however, I will encourage the person who is considering this book to keep and open mind and allow him/herself to be transported in a way only a REAL GOOD BOOK can do. Enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a horrible book
This book was horrible...no plots, no metaphores; nothing I do not agree with the writing style of the author and I don't think that anyone who knows a good book when they read one, would either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Un escritor brillante
... Product Description
When Bulletin 478 was published by the United States Geological Survey, the big mines around Lake City, Colorado, had all been discovered and many had been worked for decades. Some of the more famous included the Golden Fleece, Ute-Ulay, Hidden Treasure, Pelican, Black Crooke, and the Golden Wonder. Many more mines had already been abandoned, believed to contain only low-grade ore. However, it was later discovered that rich ore in the Lake City area often lay in pockets surrounded, or hidden as some might say, by low-class deposits. As a result, the writings of John Duer Irving (who investigated the area in 1904) and the writings of Howland Bancroft (who was in the area in 1908) were combined and published in 1911. Both men were well-known and respected Colorado geologists of the time, who published many other works on San Juan mines. Lake City's mining was punctuated with boom and bust cycles up to that time; but much of the development of the local mines and in the local mining districts (the Lake and Galena Districts) is reported in this work, which also includes early maps, photographs, and production figures. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars El pasado pesa
... Read more
