A. Nin
I bought this book for a friend.Thus I cannot review it.I never read the book.

elegy to a young womans hero
D.H. Lawrence was obviously an enormous influence on Nin.One can almost visualize the young Nin being titilated by Women in Love or Lady Chatterlys Lover.Lawrence, no doubt, inspired Ms Nin to take up the pen in the firstplace.This unprofessional study is her tribute to this great writer.Itis highly subjective (as is most criticism written by writers on otherwriters.)Nin touches on all aspects of Lawrence writing.She also lendsa much needed feminine voice to the analysis of Lawrence.She seems tointuitively respond to the characters of Lawrence. This study really hitsthe spot.It is essential reading for any student of Lawrence.It alsolends great insight into the artistic development of Anais Nin herself. (In some ways this book is as much about Nin as it is about Lawrence.) This study contains some outstanding writing from an author oftenundeservedly overshadowed by Henry Miller.This book should help to cementher own literary rank as a top notch writer. ... Read more

"...too prosaic to be the greatest poetry ?"
That's the question asked by a previous reviewer, one of only three.
Suppose I offer you a poem and let you decide for yourslves:

HUMMING-BIRD
I can imagine, in some otherworld
Primeval-dumb, far back
In that most awful stillness, that only gasped and hummed,
Humming-birds raced down the avenues.

Before anything had a soul.
While life was a heave of Matter, half inanimate,
This little bit chipped off in brilliance
And went whizzing through the slow vast succulent stems.

I believe there were no flowers then,
In the world where the humming-bird flashed ahead of creation.
I believe he pierced the slow vegetable veins with his long beak.

Probably he was big
As mosses and little lizards, they say, were once big.
Probably he was a jabbing, terrifying monster.
We look at him through the wrong end of the long telescope of Time,
Luckily for us.

[I've chosen that poem because it's short enough to type in an ammy review. Lawrence's best poems, IMHO, are in his collection called Birds, Beast, and Flowers.]

Liveliness of Thought and Feeling.

Not the highest poetry
The editor of this edition Keith Sagar has selected for it what he says are Lawrence's truly good poems which he reckons asone- hundred fifty of the roughly one- thousand Lawrence wrote. Sagar maintains that Lawrence's special quality as a poet is his emotional realism. And it seems to me undoubtedly true that Lawrence is powerful in his expression of his feeling. But then the question which might be asked is why the lines of Lawrence do not somehow sing in our memory , remain with us as for instance the lines of Keats, Hopkins, Yeats, Wallace Stevens do?
Why is it despite Sagar's objection that the consensus is probably right in seeing Lawrence as primarily a novelist, and only secondarily as a poet?

Here is a fine small poem of Lawrence from this book.

DESIRE IS DEAD
Desire may be dead
and still a man can be
a meeting place for sun and rain
wonder outwaiting pain
as in a wintry tree.

And one more small example.
WHATEVER MAN MAKES
Whatever man makes and makes it live
lives because of the life put into it
A yard of India muslim is alive with Hindu life
Anda Navajo woman, weaving her rug in the pattern of her dream
must run the pattern out in a little break at the end
so that her soul can come out, back to her.

But in the odd pattern, like snake- marks ont he sand it leaves its trail.

Am I wrong to think to think these poems are too prosaic to be the greatest poetry ?

A wonderful collection
Sagar states in the introduction of this selection of D.H. Lawrence's poetry, "We have come to think of his poetry as something of a by-product of, or relaxation from, other more strenuous and important work".There is no doubt it was to an extent, however, what is clear is that he took it just as seriously as his other artistic pursuits.Casual readers of Lawrence may be surprised to learn that he wrote around 1000 poems in his 45-years.His poetry runs in near-parallel themes to his novels - for example, "Sons and Lovers" character Miriam was inspired by the muse of "Love Poems", Lawrence's' then sweetheart Jessie Chambers."Sons and Lovers" focused upon the cruelty of love - platonic, romantic, and parental.Lawrence's poems from his "Love Poems" collection, "Cruelty and Love" and "Snap-Dragon" capture the same theme, albeit far more personally.

Lawrence's poems are all full of energy and spirit, technically adept, and yet not limited by form. Admittedly some of his work is too personal, leaving the reader alienated, but his successful poetry (mostly presented in this collection) transcends time and culture. ... Read more

Sexy, Sensual and Sophisticated
I discovered this author through another of her books on a totally unrelated subject Laid Off Now What?!?: Book 1: Thriving Financially through Unemployment (Volume 1) and I was so impressed with that I gave this a try. Whoa!Still trying to get the book away from my husband who really loved the last story.Gave us a couple of really good nights and I've given it to a couple of friends for bridal showers with other gifts.Was nice to have something sexy that didn't make me feel like I needed a lye scrubbing after, though I am still blushing.

Sensuality is an Understatement!
Caught me off gaurd!Forget having Blockbuster night, go for a Sensuality night but good luck making it to the end of a story without getting distracted if your wife is in the room. Women can write like this?Trust me, pictures are not needed.The author's words put you right in the action and how she knows what men experience?How did she do that?How could she do that!I swear she was man in a former life.The third story Midnight is a man's ultimate dream...I definately want one of those.The last story is incredible,Worked that scenario on my wife and she coming back for more, literally. This is class, something you have no problem sharing with a woman.It says volume one.Does that mean a two is on the way?

Perfect for sharing intimacy over long distances
I'm terribly shy and Miss Lewis' vivid imagery and writing provided some intimate moments for my husband and I while he was away on business for three months.The author has an incredible ability to enable a woman to understand what a man thinks, sees and hears sexually and vice versa.Most erotica I don't like because it is so crass.Sensuality isn't.It's beautifully written, visual and covers both relationship and sexuality issues and provides a great little script and steady build-up for phone flirting or anything else you want to do to start the evening on a passionate note!I can't wait to read my husband volume two! ... Did he have sex or explosive diarrhea?
I usually save two stars for books that I feel have isses with the plot or weak characters, etc. I don't feel that this book had any issues except I found most of it completely boring. It made me want to beat my forhead against things and rock back and forth like Rain Man in an attempt to pay attention to the story. Guess too fancy and historical for my ADHD brain.

I picked this book in honor of Banned Book Week so I felt guilty to not finish it, like if I stop somewhere some evil people will start squishing little mewlling kittens and mail me their little furry bodies in a box with a letter saying, "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT...YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS BUT NOOOOOO."

I didn't give up on LCL, it kind of read like waves in the ocean. It started off dull, and then it got interesting for a while, then down and back goes the wave of interest. I can understand the reasoning for banning it, all those challenging thoughts on pretty much everything including the certainty and necessity of the Iron Age...but there is a gianormous amount of whininess that is barely tolerable.

It's very comical to read the description of the sex scenes. First there was the lover that got mad at her for that he had to wait and hold still after he came so she could get off, like it was all her fault. Then her grounds keeper lover's sexual attraction to her was said as "his bowels stirred for her" and his cumming described as an "evacuating crisis"...which kind of sounds like the guy had explosive diarrhea, not sex. Yeah, that's sexy, lol.

Famous because it was banned
I picked this book up in honor of banned book week.It seems to me that this book gained more notoriety off the fact that it was banned than because it was a great piece of literature.I had to keep reminding myself that it was set in the 1920s, as the writing style was more reminiscent of a Victorian era novel.Furthermore, Lawrence portrayed his characters as if they were in the Victorian era.The characters were not well developed, thus making it hard to have sympathy for anyone in the story.The end was disappointing as it simply fizzled away.

Lady Chatterly's Lover was not the perverted, illiterate story I was lead to believe it was. It was a story of classes and self realization.It was thoughtfully written, though it did drag in many parts.Yes, there are many sexual liasons in the story, but I think the author's intent was to make them part of the natural flow of the story instead of a suggestion.In saying that, it was quite evident the love scenes were written by a man.Mostly very mechanical in description and very cut and dry.A female author would have elongated the love scenes and added a bit more detail.Although the focus of the book has always been the sex scenhes, there is more substance to it than that

Not shocking anymore, but dang good

A 'Novel' Guest Review By Leigh Wood

After one too many viewing's of the 1992 BBC production of Lady Chatterley, I finally broke down and read the book. I thought the 1928 unedited version of Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence would be a tough book to find. Expensive, rare, old leather, smelly, buried in an antiquarian store-that type of book. Indeed I was very pleased to find the 1928 Unexpurgated Oriali Edition in paperback at my local Borders. $4.95!

I wrapped Mists of Avalon as quickly as possible and avoided watching the film before I plunged into Lover. I read other writers' criticisms on D.H. Lawrence and his works before purchasing the book, and I knew the book and movie didn't have the same ending. Of course, I also knew the book's controversial reputation and supposedly salacious use of naughty words and torrid sex talk. My edition opened with forwards and introductions detailing the book's tough road to publication and the aftermath of censorship. Although this story is fairly well known in literary circles, this introduction is informative, with details and facts on the books printing, pirated editions, and trial information. Even if one was a toe towards prudish, you can't not be interested in reading Lady Chatterley's Lover after these words of praise.

Although the 1992 adaptation by Ken Russell is quite faithful, Lawrence's work is naturally bigger and more detailed than what can be translated to the screen. I noticed many cases where the film had taken word for word from the book, and also where scenes had been combined or moved and relocated for the film. Still, much was remaining to surprise me. After her Baronet husband's paralysis during World War I, young Constance Chatterley begins to question her mundane existence as Lady of Wragby Hall and nursemaid to her crippled husband. They are educated and literate, but as she listens to her husband and his friends chit chat about war, sex, society, and money, Connie becomes more and more disenchanted with her upper class standing. After a very dissatisfying affair with playwright Michaelis, Connie begins a saucy love affair with her husband's gamekeeper Olivier Mellors. Despite the fear of being caught and societal pressures upon them, Connie and Mellors continue to meet. When the scandal comes out, they take measures to secure a life together, despite the class divisions against them.

The great part of Lady Chatterley's Lover is the love discovered between the titular characters, so I was intrigued by the intitial Michaelis relationship. We learn much about Connie intellectually and sexually through this affair, internal thoughts and disappointing feelings that can't be show onscreen. I've read other fans commentaries online about Joely Richardson's performance as Lady Chatterley in the BBC version. Women sometimes find her portrayal conceded and flaky. Connie has nothing to loose, where Mellors has everything to loose. In the novel, this is certainly not the case. Connie is already nothing, an emotionless drone whose stature gives her nothing.

Likewise the Mellors in print has everything to gain. His backstory is greatly detailed by Lawrence, yet he maintains his strong silent and mysterious air. Once on officer during the war and a well educated pupil then tutor, Mellors could have the upper class at his fingertips, yet he chooses to be left alone. This book is not just about sex. Our couple is disenchanted with war, industry, money, and the people around them who think that those things give meaning to life. Some of Mellors' dialogue is written in dialect and for an American like me, it took a double take at first. However, Mellors can also speak perfect English, and does so when he chooses, not when people expect it of him. In fact, his speech is often broken when he thinks it will upset people, such as Connie's image conscious sister Hilda.

Lawrence spends a great many of the early chapters discussing artists and their self important selves, yet it is a great and subtle revelation when Connie discovers books in Mellor's house. Its often claimed not to be Lawrence's best work, but Lady Chatterley's Lover intricately weaves the love story between Connie and Mellors with multiple commentaries from Lawrence. Without being too obvious with his author views, Lawrence questions the English post war Jazz society and classes as well as the later artistic society Lawrence often found himself outcast from. This catch-22 is again mirrored in the novel. Where Connie and Mellors affair crosses class divides and angers their entire community, her husband Clifford's unusual relationship with his nurse Mrs. Bolton is entirely acceptable. I love Charles Dickens for his veiled or outright social commentaries, and I dare say Lawrence is on par here in asking those same society questions. Who decides these social barriers and imobilities? Why are some invisible to these restraints via power, position, and money? What is the right reason to circumvent these divides and do something about oneself?

Lady Chatterley's Lover has kept me thinking about itself long after I've finished the book. I'd like to read it again and find answers to these questions. Although it is a thorough British book in time and place, Lover also presents very modern thoughts and conjecture. After Lawrence's difficulty with self publishing and piracy, the book was banned until a 1960 obscenity trial. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't find the book all that shocking. Was it because I was familiar with the film version, or is it because the book perhaps caused our current liberal ideas and desensitizing? Four letter words and sex talk have always existed, but Lawrence's honest treatment of the subjects opened a Pandora's box on erotica, pornography, nudity, and bad words in art, literature, and film. I can't say the same for other works, but Lover is actually a very tasteful book, rather innocent in a way. The rebirth of the main characters through their love for one another. Lawrence was tempted to call the story `Tenderness' and the title would have fit.

Although the work speaks for itself when it comes to sex, society, and even religion, my edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover came with `A Propos on Lady Chatterley's Lover' by D. H. Lawrence himself. After finishing the book on a positive note, I was disappointed in this thirty page essay. One should always let his work speak for itself, and there's no need for this redundant and overlong speech from Lawrence. From World War I to Christianity, Lawrence's essays should be cut in half or is perhaps better for a college classroom discussion.

If you're looking for porn or sexual gratification, you won't find it in Lady Chatterley's Lover. Most certainly the book is not for everyone, and if frank sexual talk and situations is not your cup of tea, do skip this read. I'lm a fairly straight laced individual, and I only second guessed the book once. In Chapter 16 or 19, I thought the anal sex euphuisms were getting a bit redundant. I giggled a few times over the language, but was moved by other beautiful descriptions from Lawrence. At first I looked for Lover in Borders' small erotica section, but Lawrence's works are found in the general fiction section and in the classics section at my local library.
Lady Chatterley's Lover is by no means for children or prudes, but it is a fine novel that has transcended time and place. We may be too loose or vulgar in our society today-celebrities with wardrobe malfunctions and half naked women in music videos. Lover and the books in its wake may have caused this openness, but the book also reminds me of the good things about he past. Women wore gloves, men tips their hats to all, and writers wrote great books.

Good read in great condition
Lawrence Block fans will like this collection. I knocked off a few stories waiting in line at the polls. Condition of book when received was better than I've seen in stores.

Some Days the Bear Gets You
I bought "Some Days You Get the Bear" for the Bernie Rhodenbarr story, "The Buglar Who Dropped in On Elvis". It completed my collection of Bernie stories, and a whole lot more. There's something for everyone here... Three Matt Scudder stories, the first installment in Hit Man, two Martin Ehrengraf stories, and the brilliant "Cleaveland in My Dreams". I expected to read the Burglar story and shelve the title, but I ended up reading the whole book.

Block's short stories hit the mark.
"Some Days You Get the Bear," is one of Lawrence Blocks short story collections. It's the third of four. Collections such as these are difficult to tae 1-5 because each of them in the collection is differentfrom the others. I enjoyed some more than others; and there was one or twoI didn't enjoy at all.

Characters we are familiar with from Blocks novelsare here in the collection. Here we find Bernie Rhodenbarr, burglar andbookseller from the series of books that feature the person by that name.This time Bernie is hired to break into Graceland and hunt down theElvis.

Martin Ehrengraf, a lawyer who never loses a case is here, too.Ehrengraf does not have a series of his own but is featured in Blocksfourth collection of short stories.

Matthew Scudder, Block's awardwinning detective is in at least two short stories. Scudder, as Block fanswill recall, has is own series of more than a dozen novels.

Hit ManKeller, the assassin for hire has an entry here ass well.

All in all"Some Days You Get the Bear," is good reading and a must forBlock enthusiasts. ... Read more

Short and Sweet!! A 75 minute Scudder tale told well.
Out The Window is a great short Matt Scudder mystery told with precision by Bruce Weitz. Having devoured all the Matt Scudder print mysteries available and often passing them on to friends I was intrigued when I saw this Lawrence Block audiobook. I had never seen his work on tape and never seen this title in print; and I had a new vision-impaired friend that craved audiobooks. I bought it for her, but couldn't wait to listen to it myself. Weitz is the fine actor who played Mick Belker in Hill Street Blues, and I hadn't had any new Scudder since Everybody Dies.Bruce Weitz does an incredible job of telling Scudder's story of a murder investigation. He "is" Matt Scudder and he speaks to us in Matt's NY west-side ex-cop voice. He switches to other character's voices seamlessly and tells the tale fast and well. This Hell's kitchen murder mystery is early Scudder, the bourbon is flowing as fast as the story. Enjoy! ... Read more

If you like Parker, you'll like Ehrengraph
These three short stories are excellent in the "fun with crime" genre (like the Donald Westlake/Richard Stark "Parker" novels) where the reader wants the criminal to get away with it.

The first two stories (The Ehrengraph Defense and The Ehrengraph Obligation) tell of a defense lawyer named Martin Ehrengraph who finds ingenious ways to get his clients off - including subsequent murders to throw suspicion away from his clients. The first story introduces Ehrengraph hired by a mother who wants to prove that her son is innocent of a murder (for which he is likely guilty). The second shows how far Ehrengraph will go in his love of poetry.

The third (unrelated) story tells of an old famous assassin meeting with the up-and-coming young Turk killer who idolizes him. The two twists of the story made it wonderful escapist fun.

I highly recommend these simple and entertaining stories for a voyeuristic walk on the criminal sociopath side of the street. Ehrengraph is a great invention whom I hope the author writes more about.

One of the Best Single Author Anthologies Out There!
I've read a few of Lawrence Block's novels but haven't widely read his work. Sometimes They Bite is my first encounter with Block as a short story writer and I have to say, he is up there with the greatest writers of the short tale. I'll definitely be checking other anthologies of either his own work or various author collections he has contributed to.Sometimes They Bite is full of ingenious criminals, nasty villains, terrorists, schemers, unexpected plotline twists and just really good stories.Some are a little predictable due to the fact you've been exposed to the twists of former stories and are expecting another, other than that I can't fault this collection.

Very good short story collection
For my money, Stephen King is the best short story writer of the last thirty years.I've never read a short story anthology by any other author to match his "Night Shift," or "Skelton Crew" collections.But Lawrence Block comes close with "Sometimes They Bite."Block may be a crime writer, but some of his stories, like the excellent title story, read similar to King's horror work, especially his non-supernatural horror work.Private Detective Matthew Scudder makes one fine appearance in this collection, as does Bernie Rhodenbarr of Block's "Burglar" series.The rest are a hodgepodge of stories told from the point of view of victims, perpetrators and cops.Some work better than others, of course, but there isn't a dud in the lot.

Fans of Lawrence Block should check out this book for a different view of an author who normally produces great novels.
