Product Description
This book rests on three cultures: applied science, engineering, and management. While these plainly overlap to a degree, a person cannot move from success in one to success in another without considerable effort, dedication and talent. Clearly, an understanding of these cultural differences is essential to engineers whose career goal is to evolve into top-level managers.

The first step in gaining such understanding is to admit that these three cultures are quite distinct. The applied science culture is typified by the engineering school; the engineering culture is typified by the company engineering design office; and the management culture is typified by the senior management team and the boardroom. The older one gets, the more one realizes the enormous importance of "culture" to almost every important human issue, and the topic of engineers becoming managers is certainly no exception.

Part I of This Book.Having briefly established in Chapter 1 the inseparability of engineering and management, we then look at the students who enter an engineering school intending to graduate and become employed as young engineers. Although they go to their first classes reasonably expecting that they are now on course to become engineers, as described in Chapter 2 what they usually find on offer, is the culture of applied science. Part I is intended for engineering students and should be read as early as possible in engineering school. Chapter 3 argues that it is the duty of an engineering school to acquaint all of its students not just with careers in civil, chemical and electrical engineering, etc., but about careers in engineering management as well-and to devote an appropriate fraction of its financial and human resources to discharge this duty. Chapter 4 shows, in abridged form, the entire journey from the most abstract of mathematics to the realities of commerce.

Part II of This Book. Here, the target readers are functioning engineers in various nonacademic organizations. Part II should be read as early as possible after graduation. One must decide what the future options and opportunities are, what one's strengths and weaknesses are, and what one most enjoys doing - not just over the next year or two, but over the remainder of one's career. Chapter 7 considers risk management. No business can be successful without planning, and planning requires making assumptions about the future. The second area examined (Chapter 8) is accountancy. Anyone who does not understand the relation between his activities and the financial needs of the business (or considers this relationship to be someone else's problem) is in a self-limiting career. The third area (Chapter 9) should be a source of excitement for engineers - innovation. Finally, in Chapter 10, we examine the important concept of intellectual capital. Knowledge-based companies are heavily dependent on what their employees know.

Part III of This Book. The last three chapters were written for readers whose original degree was in engineering but who are completely committed to a career of management and corporate leadership at the highest possible level. Chapter 11, on leadership, shows that engineering-based talents are far from sufficient to achieving full-blown corporate leadership. Chapter 12, on entrepreneurship, gives concrete criteria for whether this step is right for you, and also typical weaknesses to avoid. Finally, Chapter 13 discusses governance and boards of directors. ... Read more

Product Description
The only completely true, comprehensive, compelling life story of one of western music history's inimitable talents: FOY WILLING of The Riders of the Purple Sage fame.

Although it's been some time since Foy's spectacular rise to national stardom through radio, personal appearances, million-seller recordings and "B" western movies, there are still people today who remember him and "the smoothest western sounds ever recorded," as voiced by western music historian, O.J. Sikes. And for those who don't recall those more-innocent days, "No One to Cry To" panoramas the Golden Age of Radio and the rip-roaring cowboy movies with Monte Hale and Roy Rogers of the 40s and 50s.

“No One To Cry To” is also the story of a musical genius's sad decline from a star-studded life to a recovering alcoholic's struggle to regain recognition for his song writing, singing and arranging talents. The story of that comeback, cut short at its imminent pinnacle, is aptly described by Ranger Doug (Riders in the Sky) who said: "I found 'No One to Cry To' to be a moving and deeply personal look at the troubled life of a hugely talented performer. To see Foy's terrible struggles as well as his enormous successes gives a set of insights unobtainable anywhere else . . . deeply affecting." Includes never-before-seen photos and a complete filmography and discography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography
This is a great biography about an very talented cowboy singer and song writer, Foy Willing. It was written by his ex wife so it contains a lot of insight into Foy's character. It's a good read that goes fast and doesn't bog you down with boring details. If you are a fan of Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, I recommend that you get this book. It's a good companion piece to his music.

4-0 out of 5 stars No one to cry to: Hard Ride into the Sunset with Foy Willing of the Riders of the Purple Sage
I was intrigued by the book as my father in-law was Al Sloey, one of the Riders of the Purple Sage.I have some tapes of telephone conversation between Al and Foy.I also have quite a little bit of other memorabilia. The spelling of LaVeta Sloey was incorrect.I purchased copies for my Son and Daughter, Al and LaVeta's grandchildren.I also have letters from Mrs. Jackson to Laveta.Very interesting book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long, Hard Ride, But an Easy Read
Anyone old enough to remember the golden days of movies, radio and early television when the cowboy was king and the kings sang some of the sweetest songs in the Golden West, is going to love "No One to Cry To."
This warm, intimate biographical work by Sharon Lee Willing evokes the great Foy Willing and his "Riders of the Purple Sage" whose velvet harmony delivered such classics as "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds," "Cool Water" and Willing's own "No One to Cry To" from which the title is derived. When the "Riders" weren't hitting the top of the charts with their singing, they were busy riding at a wild gallop behind Roy Rogers to head the black hats off at the pass in 13 movies. In addition to all that, they sang and toured with some of the brightest stars in the entertainment firmament, including Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Howard Keel and Ann Miller.
The author knows the subject matter well. She is Willing's widow, and she tells the tale of his turbulent life, blessed by genius and cursed by the demons of drugs and alcohol, as no one else could. Even those not old enough to remember Roy, Dale and Trigger, and before them, cowboy star Monte Hall, with whom the Riders also costarred, still may find a taste in this story of what so entranced their parents and grandparents.
Certainly they will remember the songs because after half a century, they're still being played on country western stations.
There is so much in this delicious slice of nostalgia that few fans ever knew. Willing tells, for example, how Dale Evans, the wife of Roy Rogers, lifted Foy Willing's "Happy Trails," tweaked it and made it their theme song, listing herself as the composer.
Sharon Lee Willing, an agile and passionate writer, was married to Foy for 13 years, until his demons wrecked not only his health but their union. Even after they went their separate ways, however, they stayed in constant touch until his death in 1978, as evidenced by the letters they wrote to each other, which are included in the text.
The subtitle of the book is, "A Long, Hard Ride into the Sunset with Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage." Sharon Lee Willing rode a good bit the journey at his side, and her recounting of that adventure will win the hearts even of fans who may be meeting Foy for the first time. Read the book, then watch for the biopic that is bound to follow. Hollywood can no more resist this story than can Foy Willing's fans.

Product Description
Even Clan Korval needs friends, and the kinds of friends they often need aren't simply buddies and pals, but allies. As Cantra so succinctly put it:"In the matter of allies only two things are important. First, can he shoot? Second, will he aim at your enemy?"Allies features several stories dealing with members of Clan Korval, including the Miri Robertson story, "Fighting Chance," which led off Tanya Huff and Alexander Potter's Women of War anthology in 2005 and features a young Miri on Surebleak. The other story, "Prodigal Son", which is original to this chapbook, shows Val Con returning to Vandar, the scene of much action early in the Agent of Change sequence, where things set in motion during his first visit are coming to a very dangerous conclusion. ... Product Description
A Gringa in Guanaja is an exhilarating and powerful story about Guanaja and the Bay Islands of Honduras, that fuses adventure, history and romance with intriguing characters. Though the Bay Islands’ beautiful bays provide safe anchorage now, their reputation as popular pirate havens was well founded. This is a fabulous tale about Sharon Collins, a woman who left the warm sands of Florida for the unknown. It is an engaging book which traces the remarkable true story of her life in Guanaja through acts of piracy, revolution, peace on coral reefs, love and stormy chaos, recalled from memory and journals. Ms. Collins has a wandering spirit. Guanaja beckoned and she responded. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Guanaja before Mitch.
I purchased this book because I travel often to the island of Guanaja.I don't know if it would be interesting to me otherwise.Remembering Guanaja before the effects of Hurricane Mitch and the rebuilding and addition of some technology that came afterward is sweet. Although each chapter has some interesting points, it was frustrating that Ms. Collins felt she must mask the names of actual places on the island, i.e. the "beach resort" and "retreat resort".
She has a perspective on the dynamics of the islanders and the towns they live in thatonly someone who actually lived there could have. I would have liked to know more about how she came to marry an islander. It's interesting that she aparently has not returned. ... Read more
