Product Description

More than two decades into the global HIV epidemic, many HIV positive patients who have access to antiretroviral medications are graying. These patients and their clinicians now face another set of complex health issues related to aging. HIV and Aging examines the known effects of HIV and HIV medications on older patients and on their immune systems. The book explores the coalescence of aging and HIV on neurologic, psychiatric, cardiovascular, endocrine, renal, and pulmonary systems and oncology.

Written by some of today’s top experts, HIV and Aging answers questions like:

  • What are the similarities with immune system changes that occur with aging and those associated with HIV?
  • What effects do HIV and HIV medications have on cardiovascular health?
  • What do we know about drug interactions between antiretrovirals and medicines used to treat diseases of aging?

Product Description
The statistics are appalling. Between 8% and 10% of U.S. high school students carry guns to school every day. In a typical mid-size city, 30 to 50 cases of school violence are reported daily, and half of these cases involve guns.

School Violence: Assessment, Treatment, Prevention shows us the reality behind the statistics. Its distinguished contributors include leading clinicians, researchers, school counselors, and legal authorities who closely examine every aspect of this complex epidemic, challenging us to solve this multifaceted public health problem and offering concrete recommendations on how to do it.

The comprehensive volume is divided into four parts:

  • Part I, Contributing Factors, presents the multiple contributing factors, including those involved in creating violent children and violence-prone schools, the nature and context of school violence, and its biological and cultural causes. For example, although the number of violent deaths by shooting in schools remained stable through the 1990s, the number of violent acts against female students increased significantly, as did gang activity and the availability of guns in schools.
  • Part II, Assessment and Management, details diagnostic assessment, management, and treatment of children and adolescents who have the potential for or have threatened school violence. Eyewitnesses describe the shootings and their aftermaths in Pearl, Mississippi, and Littleton, Colorado, including the extensive measures taken to decrease the traumatic effect of these incidents on the children and adolescents and their families, the educators, and the community at large. Also presented is a model for time-limited, cognitive–behavioral group therapy for those who sustain or witness violent injuries in schools—a model that could be adapted to other settings.
  • Part III, Legal Aspects, begins by putting us on notice that anyone aware of a potentially violent act by a youth has a legal responsibility to alert the intended victim(s) and others who could warn or protect them, offering a uniquely insightful view—by the plaintiff attorney for the victims of school violence in Paducah, Kentucky—of the Tarasoff case and its ramifications.
  • Part IV, Prevention, concludes with what we can do now to help prevent school violence, detailing effective prevention measures that range from the innovative (a method that focuses on the school as a whole rather than on individuals and uses a social system and power–dynamics perspective) to the everyday (teaching tolerance and conflict resolution).
Psychiatric practitioners, clinical social workers, pediatricians, art and activity therapists, school counselors and administrators, and other educators and mental health care professionals—and concerned adults—who want to help prevent violence in our schools and minimize its traumatic effects on children, parents, and the community at large will appreciate this lucid, in-depth treatment of what has become one of today’s most disturbing issues. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars School violence
In 1999 it was found that 17% of American high school students reported carrying a gun or other weapon over the past 30 days (MacKay AP, Fingerhut LA, Duran CR. Adolescent health chartbok. Health, United States, 2000. Hyattsville, MD: Nat Center Health Statistics, 2000) and males were more likely to carry than females. Among male students, non-Hispanic black students were more likely to carry a gun than non-Hospanic white and Hispanic students. Seven percent of the students reported carrying a weapon to school, 11% of males and three percent of females. In 1999, 27 percent of female students and 44 percent of male students were involved in one or more physical fights, but between 1991 and 1999 the percent of students carrying a weapon decreaseds 35% (26% in 1991 and 17% in 1999) (1).
This book is edited by Mohammad Shafii, a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and Sharon Shafii, a nurse with experience in adolescent medicine with another 22 contributors with a multidisciplinary background. The book is devided into four sections (Contributing factors, assessment and management, legal aspects and prevention) with a total of 15 chapters and a god index.
The layout is good, the chapters easy to read and the editors did an excellent work in order to give an up-to-date review of this field with perspectives for further research, prevention and interventions. We would have liked to see e-mail addresses included in the list of authors for further personal communication with each author.
This book will certainly become a resource book for professionals working in the school environment.

Product Description
Hidden from the human-inhabited world by the inimical magical device known as the keleigh, the Vaitura has become a subtle battleground where the once all-powerful Elder Fey strive against each other and the upstart Queen to regain ascendancy. Of all the Elder Fey it is Altimere who is strongest in magical kest and Altimere who is most devious. Pitted against Zaldore and her group seeking to manipulate the convelescing Ranger known as Longeye to foil the Queen and rule the world, Altimere dares to utilize the untested powers of half-human, half-Fey Rebecca Beauvally, recognized by the elemental denizens of the Vaitura as The Gardener.

Now all plans must be rewritten: Becca breaks Altimere's capricious dominion with the dangerous herbal help of Duainfey, but, weakened by the effort, is held against her will in service to the Queen by Meripen's mysterious sea-lord cousin, Sian. Becca must escape the Queen's retainers to regain control of her own fate. With the magics of the Vaitura, and Altimere's retribution arrayed against her, she escapes with only her horse, a mad forest-living Brethren, and her freed magical servant Nancy at her side. Worse, the recovered legendary hero Longeye, long beloved of the Vaitura's forest folk and creatures, has re-armed at Sian's bidding, and knows most of all about Becca that she is both dangerous, and of the same folk who cruelly tortured him and slew his lover before his eyes. ... Product Description
Within these pages, there are over 200 poems which were written during the thirty-seven years of Reverend Jerry Lee Oliver's Ministry. He loved his family and friends, and he spent time counseling families, andencouraging the youth in the Community. Many of thesepoems reveal his emotions at the time they were written, as he helped these familiesthrough their trials and tribulations. There are happy ones, - sad ones, - hopeful ones, and religious ones. In fact, many speak on 'Life's problems' and how to cope with them. He especiallyloved Christmas and wrote about all of the Holidays. Ofthegroupof 200 poemsthat we nowhave, the oldest dated one was written in 1933, andthere are 56 which have no date. He probablywrote at least one poem per year most years. Hismost prolific years of writing were the WWII years 1939 through 1945.It was in those years that he wrote about his concern for Service Men, - World Peace, - Freedom, - and the Brotherhood of Man.These concerns seemed to be of great importance to him at that time. Many of these poems are based of events of his life, such as "My Childhood Home,"-"The Pea Ridge School," -"When Tom and I Were Boys," remembering his happy childhood. Both "The Presence," and "My Call," reveal his feelings as a young man and his call to enter the ministry in 1914. Dad wrote about his own father, "The Farmer," who was a farmer for all of his life, beginning in the 1800's.He worked the land with a horse and a mule, from daylight until dark to provide for his family."In later years he wrote of his father in the poem "The Pilgrim at Sunset," and read it at his funeral. He wrote of his Mother in poems, "In Remembrance,""To Honor Mother," and"A Funeral Prayer." In "A Call and A Romance," he wrote of a young man at Tarleton College, who became a minister with his help and guidance, and the two were always close. "A Call and A Romance" is a story of Hayden Edwards and his wife, Jessie. And later, "That Friend of Mine" revealed Dad's feelings upon the early death of this good friend. Dad wrote several poems about the earth and the seasons and their effect on man and the creatures of the earth. He was most observant in "Autumn," -"The North Wind,"-"The Blizzard," - "Showers,"-"The Breath of Spring," and"That's Winter." In "Snapshots" he described my Mother, Pearlie, and I'm sure he had her in mind in the poems "Romance" and"Preachers Wives." He was always close to those of the community as in the poem, "The Pea Ridge School," and to the end in, "They Live On." He served his Community well and spent many hours in his Model T Ford, traveling from one church to another. He wrote poems of encouragement "Just Brace Yourself and Take It," - "Keep up Your Chin," as well as others. He wrote poems of prayer and prayers for all who needed special attention Health - Grief, - Relief. One I especially like is "The Old Prayer Log," a poem of faith and love of Mom Pearlie's Grandmother, during andafterthe Civil War. He wrote to all of us in "Today is Yours," and "Your Life is Not Your Own," And at the end of his life, he wrote "Weep Not For Me," and we all knew why. These are my personal observations for some of his poems.I have enjoyed so much saving them for others. He was a wonderful man---MY DAD. Having completed "The Project" in April of 2003, I feel that I know my Dad better than I did before.I am so glad that I was able to complete the job.My personal outlook on life is far better now.I decided that it is finally time for his book to be published, - and forhis dream to come true. THANKS DAD FOR YOUR GOOD WORK.I'll try to pass it on to others. You are still an inspiration for us all! Jerry Lee Oliver Jr.(aka"JLOJ") May 21, 2003 ... Read more
