Lichtenberg's Hogarth
Georg Christoph Lichtenberg is little known outside Germany.Only a few collections of his writings have appeared in English, including this book, which consists of Lichtenberg's essays on the engravings of Hogarth. However, this work certainly is one of Lichtenberg's masterpieces, an extended survey of Hogarth's achievements in art and social commentary.Lichtenberg (1742-1799)was a bright star of the German Enlightenment.A witty and learned man, he taught physics and philosophy at the University of Goettingen.He was known far and wide in his time as an eminent lecturer in his field, and as an editor of several almanacs and magazines.

He was a great admirer of the English and their democratic system (however imperfect), and paid several visits to the country. His essays on the engravings of Hogarth are full of insights on the English character, as well as containing discussions of the art of engraving.Needless to say, Lichtenberg admired him greatly. This extended analysis of art and its effects is unusual for Lichtenberg, who preferred the short essay and the aphorism.In the latter, he was a master ("When a book and a head collide and there is a hollow sound, is it always in the book?")
In the end, one discovers in Lichtenberg's commentaries a keen and wise critic, a genius of the Enlightenment who saw in Hogarth's engravings a wide-eyed and critical intellect--and artis--of his time. ... Read more
