Oncology of infancy and childhood
Pediatric oncology was for over 35 years chapters in Nathan and Oski's Hematology, but now it was decided to launch a textbook by itself. This was a wise decision and the result is very good.


This book has five sections: Biology of cancer, pediatric cancer therapeutics, hematologic malignancy, solid tumors and supportive care with a total of 34 very informative chapters and an extensive and helpful index. In the first chapter of the epidemiology of leukemia in children it can for example be seen how different the incidence of childhood leukemia is for different countries. The annual incidence of childhood leucemia per million population in Israel is 25.7, which is low compared to Hong Kong and Denmark with 53.9 and 53.0, ALL and AML were also low for Israel ( 18.6 and 5.3 compared to Hong Kong, 40.6 and 3.9 and Denmark 42.8 and 8.4).


For me the most interesting chapter was by Christopher Recklitis, Robert Casey and Lonnie Zeltzer on "Psychosocial care of children and families" with a conceptual model for guiding the care of the child and the families, how to approach the crisis of the cancer diagnosis, the adjusting and stressing part of the treatment and challenges during treatment and the special issue that will or may arise during the treatment like marital adjustment, non-complience or depression. But the chapters on palliative care, survivors and the ethical considerations in the clinical trials with cancer patients.


All in all the editors should be congratulated for a work well done and this book should also find its place in each pediatric department library.
