Product Description
This original anthology traces a century of Russian poetry, taking us through the turbulent decades from 1900 to 2000 with poets of stature who reflected or recorded their times. It combines work by famous and lesser known (outside Russia) poets, some never previously published in English, through the medium of six translators, who also contribute biographical and historical notes. The one unnamed poet is the writer from the Arsenal Mental Prison Hospital in the 1970s, whose anguished, affecting verse, in a little book bound in elastoplast, was smuggled out of the hospital. These are poems that will continue to survive.

The translators: Vladimir Baskayev, Kitty Hunter Blair, Belinda Cooke, Richard McKane, Michael Molnar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good selection
Why has nobody reviewed this collection yet? McKane and co. have produced and excellent survey of Russian poetry from the dawn of the last century to the present day. Better known poets such as Velemir Khlebnikov and Osip Mandelstam share pages with less familiar names like Leonid Aronzon and Katia Kapovich. Each poet holds his/her own against the aformentioned greats, and their sections are nicely introduced with brief biographies. Helpful annotations are included when necessary.

McKane has been brave in that he has consciously decided not to include many of the better known Russian poets of the 1900s - No Mayakovsky, Tsvetaeva, Pasternak, Blok, Akhmatova or Brodsky. His gamble pays off in that the underappreciated poets included make the volume far more entertaining than yet another collection of the more noteworthy poets same few famous poems. I for one would rather read the wonderful translations of Poplavsky included here than anything by Brodsky, and Khlebnikov - while much less famous than Mayakovsky - was a much more innovative and ultimatly entertaining champion of the Russian Futurist movement.

This volume is well worth purchasing for anyone interested in Russian poetry in translation. I would recommend it as an introduction only hesitantaly as at this present moment it is th only place that readers are likely to find some of these poets works in English. ... Read more

Dmitrij Dmitrievi ostakovi) (25 September 1906 9 August 1975) was a Soviet composer and one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Leon Trotsky's chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the Stalinist bureaucracy. His music was officially denounced twice, in 1936 and 1948, and was periodically banned. Yet he also received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. Despite the official controversy, his works were popular and well received. After a period influenced by Prokofiev and Stravinsky, Shostakovich developed a hybrid style, as exemplified by his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District (1934). This single work juxtaposed a wide variety of trends, including the neo-classical style (showing the influenc...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8520 ... Read more

Excerpt: Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel (Russian: , 13 July 1894 January 27, 1940) was a Soviet journalist, playwright, and short story writer acclaimed as "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry." Despite being an enthusiastic Communist, Isaac Babel was arrested, tortured and shot during Joseph Stalin's Great Purge. Isaak Babel was born into a family of Manus and Feyga Bobel (Babel changed the spelling of his surname in his twenties). Manus Bobel was a Jewish shopkeeper in Odessa during a period of intermittent pogroms and mass exodus of Jews from the Russian Empire. Isaak Babel's family survived Odessa's 1905 pogrom with the help of Christian neighbors, but his great maternal grandfather Shoyl was one of about 300 Jews murdered. In his teens, Babel hoped to get into the preparatory class of the Nicolas I Odessa Commercial School.
