The patrons claimed the right of intruding their own nominees ; the parishioners claimed a veto ; and the two parties, intrusionists and non-intrusionists, were arrayed against each other. At last, the non-intrusionists retired and formed the Free Church of Scotland. We must take a rapid survey of the history of this question, without which it is impossible to understand the position of the Free Church. One circumstance we must mention at the outset, which, had it always been borne in mind, would have simplified the point at issue to English minds, and removed some prejudices both from Scotch and English students of the question. It is this -- a Scotch patron, if he claims the absolute right of appointing a minister to his vacant living, claims that which no English patron possesses. The difference is this -- in England the patron can only appoint a clerk in priest's orders; that is, one whom the bishops have pronounced, after examination, competent to the ministry, and who is, in the fullest sense, an ordained presbyter. But in the Church of Scotland, ordination does not precede, but follows, the appointment to a living. The probationer whom the patron names is a youth on trial He must obtain a parish, or pastoral charge, before he can be ordained. It is unnecessary to explain in how many ways this ... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Ellie
I have listened to all the books in this series. They are great when driving to & from work & I couldn't wait for this one & Circle of Flight. What a disappointment! Not the stories, the narrator. Suzi Dougherty, to me, was Ellie. Mikaela Martin sounds like a soft little girl, not our fierce, strong, capable Ellie at all. I will continue to listen but the series has been spoilt for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars I can't speak of the audio...but the book was ok
It's not Marsden's best of the Tomorrow/Ellie Cronicles series, but it is OK. The action seems to have lost a bit of it's Oomph, but I am not sworn off the series yet.
Alot of focus is placed on the Gavin character in this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Captivating
Powerful and captivating best describes John Marsden's latest novel, While I Live.Following on from Marsden's award winning Tomorrow series; While I Live is the first in a new series entitled The Ellie Chronicles.Set in the set in the small rural Australian town of Wirrawee, it begins four months after a war has ended in Australia.

While I Live is narrated by Ellie Linton, an independent, mature seventeen year old.She lives on a farm with her parents and Gavin, a profoundly deaf boy who was abandoned during the war.The action begins in a gripping first chapter, when a tragedy occurs and Ellie's parents are killed by a group of enemy soldiers. Ellie's world is once again turned upside down and Ellie has to cope raising herself, Gavin and running family farm, with very little support. However, many challenges confront Ellie along the way and this makes a very interesting plot.

While I Live strongly resembles the style of the Tomorrow series and many old characters from the Tomorrow series make appearances in the book, including Homer, Fee and Lee.New characters are also introduced but unlike the old characters, the reader does not gain a deep understanding of them.Hopefully these new characters will appear more in the books to follow and this way, readers will get to know them better.

During the action scenes, Marsden does not disappoint his readers as he provides nail biting action scenes, making it impossible for the book to be put down. Humour is included into the storyline, possibly added to relieve the tension of the action scenes! It deals with some powerful issues that are best suited for the young adults' age group but it targets the intended age group well, providing the message "never give up hope".John Marsden leaves his readers waiting for more and there are signs to show that there is certainly more in store for Ellie Linton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!
As well as being a very creepy story, this book has some of the most beautiful illustrations that I've ever seen. The pictures are full of details which add to the impact of the story, and are a very accurate representation of the lovely Australian Alps (through which the kids arehiking) - they actually look photographic until you take a closer look.

Iwas surprised that this book wasn't shortlisted in the AustralianChildren's Book Awards, but did at least rate a mention in the notablebooks list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Marsden in top form...almost
"Norton's Hut" is definitely thought-provoking--I would recommend it if only for the questions it raises on perceptions/reality as characters question what they think they remember and what their friendsremember.Marsden's characterizations of a group of teenagers are also sovivid that reading is almost like watching a movie in your head.Althoughnot quite as much of a page-turner as Marsden's "Tommorow when the WarBegan" series, "Norton's Hut" is definitely an enjoyableread.A word to parents: if you have problems with some mature languageand behavior, it might be advisable to read the book yourself before givingit to a child under 12. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

Assisted living, a relatively new industry, provides an alternative to traditional long-term care. These residences serve the increasing numbers of elders who need help with daily activities but wish to maintain independence. Although they are promoted as resident centered and noninstitutional, research based on consumer input indicates that many older adults and their family members do not find the buildings to be particularly friendly, warm, or supportive In Humanistic Design of Assisted Living, John P. Marsden has translated research-based information into innovative and practicable design strategies that directly address those unfavorable perceptions. Marsden provides an overview of assisted living's evolution then addresses the current information resources available to designers. He discusses successful humanistic design and presents a conceptual framework, based on consumer-based research, composed of six themes: familiar housing cues, protective enclosure, caring cues, human scale, usability, and naturalness. He applied this framework to specific guidelines for building exteriors, interior entries, and common shared spaces. His recommendations are supported by photographs that demonstrate effective design strategies as well as some less-successful examples.

This comprehensive and accessible book presents essential design guidelines for housing owners, operators, administrators, policy makers, gerontologists, interior designers, and architects.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
The book is disappointing at several levels. First, the books research base is old, essentially the mid-90's and earlier, and fails to cover the field broadly in text or bibliography. Second, the underlying argument, cited at least twice, is that architect's, as practitioners, are not capable of asking the correct questions for design, therefore the 'researcher' must ask the critical questions for the practitioner (p. 29). To support this position, he cites the mis-statements of art historians rather than practitioners. Both issues leave the design guidelines both old and incompleat as new research offers new insight.
Finally, the central theme of humanistic assisted living facilites uses tricks (tactics)such as exterior shutters or smaller windows to make a large facility humanisitic rather than discussing such concepts (strategies) as Ecogenic housing (Pastalan)that inherently reduces scale and focuses on the individuals fundamental living environment. As a practitioner of 40 years and a recent Ph.D. candidate in this field, I find the book misleading, incomplete and divisive to the concept of bridging research into practice for the best good to society and the profession.

BArch (1965), Ph.D. candidacy (2007)umich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical andScholarly Look at Assisted Living Design
Assisted living is a relatively new branch of eldercare, designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing segment of the elder population. Many seniors wish to maintain their independence, but may need varying amounts of help with daily living activities. Assisted living residences are multiplying across the country to meet this demand. But assisted living facilities are still evolving and refining themselves--there is no accepted "standard" design for such living arrangements.

In Humanistic Design of Assisted Living, John P. Marsden applies his architecture background to the assisted living sector, using principles gathered from consumers together with solid research on creating optimal assisted living designs. He examines the physical aspects of assisted living, from exterior design, interior layout, to common areas. Photographs help illustrate both positive and negative aspects of assisted living architecture. The book is a practical and much-needed guide for architects, planners, long-term care managers, and gerontologists.
