Product Description
This study examines in depth the nature of comedy itself, as well as the way that comedy was practised in 17th-century France, and applies these ideas to close readings of six seminal Moliere plays ("L'ecole des femmes", "Tartuffe", "Dom Juan", "Le misanthrope", "George Dandin" and "Le bourgeois gentilhomme"). It provides an understanding of the complexity inherent in the textual and political devices created and used by the playwright on the stage as well as in print. ... Read more

Product Description

From 1680 until the French Revolution, when legislation abolished restrictions on theatrical enterprise, a single theatre held sole proprietorship of Molière’s works. After 1791, his plays were performed in new theatres all over Paris by new actors, before audiences new to his works. Both his plays and his image took on new dimensions. In Molière, the French Revolution, and the Theatrical Afterlife, Mechele Leon convincingly demonstrates how revolutionaries challenged the ties that bound this preeminent seventeenth-century comic playwright to the Old Regime and provided him with a place of honor in the nation’s new cultural memory.

Leon begins by analyzing the performance of Molière’s plays during the Revolution, showing how his privileged position as royal servant was disrupted by the practical conditions of the revolutionary theatre. Next she explores Molière’s relationship to Louis XIV, Tartuffe, and the social function of his comedy, using Rousseau’s famous critique of Molière as well as appropriations of George Dandin in revolutionary iconography to discuss how Moliérean laughter was retooled to serve republican interests. After examining the profusion of plays dealing with his life in the latter years of the Revolution, she looks at the exhumation of his remains and their reentombment as the tangible manifestation of his passage from Ancien Régime favorite to new national icon.

The great Molière is appreciated by theatre artists and audiences worldwide, but for the French people it is no exaggeration to say that the Father of French Comedy is part of their national soul. By showing how he was represented, reborn, and reburied in the new France—how the revolutionaries asserted his relevance for their tumultuous time in ways that were audacious, irreverent, imaginative, and extreme—Leon clarifies the important role of theatrical figures in preserving and portraying a nation’s history.

To speak my mind freely to you, I am not much astonished at anything the Prince may do; for it is very natural, and I cannot disapprove of it, that a soul inflamed by a noble passion should become exasperated by jealousy, and that frequent doubts should cross his mind : but what surprises me, Don Lopez, is to hear that you keep alive his suspicions; that you are the contriver of them; that he is sad only because you wish it, jealous only because he looks at everything with your eyes. I repeat it, Don Lopez, I do not wonder that a man who is greatly in love becomes suspicious. ... Read more

Product Description
Up until the last century there was a tendency, among directors in the theatre and academic critics alike, to stress the philosophical and satirical content of Molière's comedy and to overlook the fact that he was a professional man of the theatre. More recently, certain influential critics have tended to go to the other extreme and to emphasise the theatrical and aesthetic qualities of his plays at the expense of what they may have to offer as plays of ideas. This study seeks to reconcile the two approaches: while exploring the evolution of Molière's comedy as a vehicle for his own talents as an actor and for the resources of his company, the author also seeks to define the composition of the original audiences, both in the public theatre and at Court, and to assess the taste and attitudes of the spectators for whom the plays were written. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous
I saw this translation (directed by Wadsworth himself!) performed at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington DC, and immediately pre-ordered it upon returning home.

Most of the other translations of this play have been rather bulky and awkward, but Wadsworth captures Moliere's very, very clever and biting wit. I can't sing enough of it's praises. For me, it was just perfect; Don Juan is devastingly charming, right up until the very end. I can't wait until it arrives! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars C'est bon!
this book was exactly what I needed for my french class. All in French, and the supplemental materials were very helpful and easy to understand, as were the footnotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny
I studied this text when I was 18. Moliere is witty and humorous, which actually made reading this text a pleasure. He has lovely usage of his language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I read this in my French class... the play is hilarious, well worth reading, and if you can't read French, you should read a translation or go see the play! It's funny, and although it is like many of Molière's other plays, it's a nice deviation from the normal play. ... Read more

Product Description
Harpagon, the most desperate, scheming miser in literature, starves his servants, declines to pay them, cheats his own children if he can save (or make) a few coins, and when his hoard of gold disappears, insanely accuses himself of being the thief. Dandin, in this rousing classic, not previously available in English for sixty years, is a man in a plight that everybody but him will find entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bermel IS Moliere
You can't go wrong with Albert Bermel when selecting an adaptation/translation of Moliere. This is strong, sturdy, PLAYABLE, American Moliere. Audiences will get every nuance, every inference, every joke, and will leave your theatre feeling they've experienced the "real deal."

There's nothing "fussy" or "precious" about Bermel's work (unlike the vaunted Richard Wilbur translations that leave me cold) and they're much more accessible to American ears and sensibilities than are Miles Malleson's fine British adaptations.

This "Miser" is a HOOT from the get-go.

1-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE!
No self respecting actor would ever use this text!It assumes you know absolutely nothing. It attempts to put the text into a readable form, but I see nothing charming about translating Moliere into American slang or braindead sentences.Get a real translation and don't waste your time! ...
