5-0 out of 5 stars A Packaged Bonus
I own this, I didn't buy it thru Amazon, but only because Amazon briefly delisted all the Mobi titles.During that period, I found the Mobilereference site and purchased thier package (52 authors downloaded in .zip file in prc format). Before I sarted reading Baroness Orczy, the only title I recongnized was the Scarlett Pimpernell (from late nite movies, the 1934 black and white )I've now read two of the detective short stoy books and a realy do like them. The old man in the corner reminds me of the old minute mystery books.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to getting to the rest of the collection.

P.S.
This is the 1st time I have attempted to do a review.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, The Compete Pimpernel Collection!
I have searched for years to find all the Scarlet Pimpernel books so I was ecstatic to find this complete collection for my Kindle. The best I could do previously was a few of the individual volumes, usually at a hefty price for each, and one volume called THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL OMNIBUS which had seven or eight of the stories.

The price for this is incredible, but I would have gladly paid more to get ALL the stories! Thanks goodness for this WONDERFUL collection!

If you liked the original story of the Scarlet Pimpernel, you'll be intrigued by his further adventures, no matter which film/video/book version you saw/read and liked.I highly recommend this for Pimpernel fans everywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect format for the Kindle!
Perfect format for the Kindle!

I've purchased over 10 of these complete author collections from this publisher. These collections work superbly on the Kindle. Take Mark Twain collection. The collection includes huge number of Mark Twain's works all in one place, searchable and well-organized. If I would have purchased all these books separately, searching for `The Gilded Age' among hundreds of other books on my Kindle would be a nightmare. With Mobile Reference collections, I simply click `Works of Mark Twain', then click Novels> `The Gilded Age'. I can also click `List of works in alphabetical order' > `G' > `Gilded Age'. If I forget the book title but remember that `The Gilded Age' was written by Mark Twain early in his career, I can click on `List of works in chronological order' > (1873) `The Gilded Age'.

If I want another author, say, Charles Dickens, I click `Home' > `Works of Charles Dickens'. If I want Dostoevsky, I click `Works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky'. I think this format is perfect for organizing books on the Kindle.

Inside collections, each book has links to chapters and footnotes. The text is nicely formatted and seems to be complete and accurate - something that cannot always be said about inexpensive ebooks. I think these collections are great bargains both in terms of saved money, time, and book organization!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating and enthralling. An action-packed adventure.
I Will Repay by Baroness Orczy. Published by MobileReference (mobi).

What do you do when your greatest hate becomes your greatest love? Over the body of her dead brother, Juliette Marny's father has made her swear a blood oath. But, upon fulfilling her duties, she realizes all too late that she is in love. Now, she will sacrifice her name and honor to save him from the guillotine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done, but wishing for more Percy
I did enjoy this book and it is a wonderful example of Percy's---well, being adorable. But he is a minor character in respect to the book and I find myself wishing there was more of him. There is only a brief mention of Marguerite and perhaps I'm just in love with those two, but I want more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Christmas gift
As in the previous review, this is a gift for a friend's daughter but I'm sure it will be appreciated. Also, it came in excellent condition.Merry CHRISTmas!

3-0 out of 5 stars The sequel to the Scarlet Pimpernel
This is Baroness Orczy's sequel to her classic Scarlet Pimpernel. The protagonist is a wealthy Parisian lawyer who is forced into a duel with a rich young wastrel ten years before the Revolution. The Revolution finds the same lawyer a well regarded deputy in the Assembly. He is a philanthropist and well loved, even by the Paris mob. Unbeknown to him, the young sister of the man he killed in the duel has sworn revenge on him. They meet and the action takes off from there. The Pimpernel makes his appearance and the ending is happy. It is not as good a read as the first novel but worth while if you like this genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
A man loses his son in a duel, and requests that his daughter help him do something about the man that did it, even though it was in a duel. In this book the Pimpernel is a supporting character, and he is needed later, after the young woman gets herself into trouble with Robespierre's committee.

She also learns that the surviving duellist is really not such a bad bloke after all, and, in fact, is rather attractive. ... Read more

Castles in the Air by Baroness Orczy. Published by MobileReference (mobi).

If you like The Scarlet Pimpernel novels by Emmuska Orczy, then Castles in the Air is for you. The book made me smile and howl with laughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice rainy day read
M. Hector Ratichon is an attorney/detective/forger/thief, or whatever is required, in post-Napoleonic France.

The story is told in first person and is written as a memoir of his adventures, or more likely, misadventures.Ratichon is a self-styled confidant of kings and emperors. He often has his over-sensitive heart (his own description) taken advantage of by his rogue of a clerk, Theodore, as well as any pretty woman with a sad tale who dangles hope of a fortune in front of him.

The prose is old-fashioned, but fits with the era in which the book was written and Hector's own personality. There are many amusing bits and a few laugh-out-loud moments.

This is not a romance novel, nor is it an action-adventure novel.Don't look for anything heart-stopping or pulse-pounding.Just curl up on the sofa with this one, and let Hector give you a few chuckles.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Basics . . .
This is a collection of short stories (1921) about a police agent in Paris during the Napoleonic era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
I bought this book for my wife who loves the series. She said that the book was excelent, but beware, the editing is HORRIBLE. You have to be prepared to translate quite a few words in the text. It must have been edited by a computer becuase no human could be such an idiot. She said that it is kind of funny after a while, but she did enjoy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real triumph
This book brings the Scarlet Pimpernel series to a very satisfying end. Chambetin, er, Chauvelin finally gets what is coming to him!Sir Percy is at his debonnaire best. Marguerite, the love of his life appears, too. A must-read for any Scarlet Pimpernel fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
The Scarlet Pimpernel again has to deal with a femme fatale, but this time, she is Spanish. This doesn't mean that the Robespierre types are not around, just that she is involved with one of them.

The Pimpernel has to save a brash young man from her wily clutches, and really is quite enjoying himself in the process.

When she can't outthink or seduce our hero, they decide to do the kidnap the wife routine. Committe, you should know by now, that trick never works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite pimpernel books. It is so awsome!
The story begins with a fortune teller predicting to Robispeirre that the only thing to hinder his taking over France is the Scarlet Pimpernel. So, of course, he goes to Chauvelin, who once again sets masterful plans for the Pimpernel's capture.

One of the things that I liked about this book was the simplicity of plot. No more going for the Pimpernel's honor, or others through him. The plot is cut and dry simple, catch and kill the Scarlet Pimpernel. That is not to say that the Pimpernel does not have something up his sleeve. I simply mean that as far as Chauvelin is concerned his plots aren't as elaborate or far-fetched as they have been in the past.

Margarite is also involved(duh). But in the case of this book, she actually doesn't get involed through an act of her own stupidity. Also in this book it dwells less on Margarite's life in her captivity than others do.

Lastly, I love the dialogs in this book. Percy shines in this book almost unlike any other. Therisa Cabarras is an interesting character, and she has two great conversations with our elusive Hero. Chauvelin is Chauvelin. No matter how hard he tries he simply cannot keep track of Percy(and belive me he tries extra hard in this book). Chauvelin and Percy have the best exchange ever in this book, a whole chapter of uninterupted audacidy. Any Pimpernel lover will be in heaven.

I highly recomend this book to all who liked the original, and any of the sequels. But if you haven't read the original Scarlet Pimpernel then I suggest reading that first, so as to know the characters a little better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real triumph
If you know this story, or have even read the CAPS section above, you'll know where I get my net-name from.La Cabarrus (based on a historical figure whose real life reads better than most fiction) is the main reason why this book is one of the best in the series. The terror has reached its height and both of Orczy's main protagonists are beginning to crack under the strain.Chauvelin has become obsessed with catching Sir Percy using any means necessary and his current tool is beautiful Spaniard, Theresia Cabarrus.Unfortunately for both Chauvelin and Blakeney, you never quite know where her loyalties lie. When she succeeds in luring Margot into Chauvelin's clutches, Sir Percy is driven to ever more extreme measures to save her.Can Cabarrus be trusted? Is she friend or foe?Unlike Chauvelin, she can see through Sir Percy's disguises, which makes her doubly dangerous to know.

As ever Orczy delivers a cracking good adventure through a slightly rose-tinted quizzing-glass, making even the rather gruesome sections seem light-hearted... unless you really stop and think about what she's saying. ... Read more

HE LOVED HER AND HE LOVED ROME!

Taurus Antinor loved her, that she knew. The last four days had made a woman of her: she had tasted of and witnessed every passion that rends a human heart, love, ambition, cruelty, hatred! The man whom she loved, loved her with an intensity at least equal to that which even now made her heart throb at the memory of his kiss. He loved her, longed for her, would have laid down his life for her even at the moment when he tore himself away from her arms.

BUT TAURUS ANTINOR HAD A GREATER LOVE!

Dea Flavia was like a goddess of love in Classical Rome. Beautiful, young and rich, she was worshipped by men and envied by women. But then she met the handsome and mysterious Taurus Antinor -- and his mission.

And her life changed forever.

Could she survive the blood-crazed politics of Rome? Could she fend off the advances of a mad emperor called -- Caligula?

The bread and circuses and romance of Ancient Rome brought to life by the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A hard required read for high school
This book was on my summer reading list and I did'nt know what to think of it at first. The first chapter is set around completely different characters than the rest of the book and doesnt seem to fit until the end of the book. Along with a very confusing second chapter where way to many different characters were introduced making it hard to follow their conversation. The mystery was easy to figure out and it was very easy to get frustrated with the main characters because of their lack of communication. All in all i was more happy to be done with the book and only slightly satisfied about learning how everyone ended up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nonstop Fun !
This book was an excellent book that moves at a pace that will keep you turning pages to see what happens next. The only bad thing about the book is although it has a very satisfying conclusion it leaves you wanting more. Of couse this really isnt a problem when you own a kindle because you can instantly download the next book in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Scarlet Pimpernel
After the first chapter, I could not put this classic down. This is a caped-crusader type story set during the time of the French Revolution. While French commoners are putting nobles to death left and right, a man going by the name of the Scarlet Pimpernel and his gang of followers are smuggling them out of Paris. This story is about a plot by the French to uncover the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel and put him to death. It is primarily told through the eyes of Marguerite St. Just, the wife of a popular but placid Englishman known as Sir Percy Blakeney, who is being blackmailed into finding out who this hero really is. An amazing read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
I saw the TV movie, Scarlet Pimpernel, many years ago on PBS, but missed the last episode.Bummer... Well now I know how it ended.I recommend this for readers of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful adventure
How much readers enjoyed this 1905 adventure can be judged by the fact that Orzy wrote thirteen more books about the Scarlet Pimpernel from 1906-1936 and by the more than several films and TV shows made of her story. The well-known tale is about Paris during the French Revolution. The Scarlet Pimpernel hides his true English identity and outwits the ruthless tyrants of the French Revolution, men and women who are determined to bring the citizens of France freedom and a better life, even if it requires them to kill many citizens to obtain it. The book is filled with drama and frequently humorous dialogue, including:
We seek him here, we seek him there,
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven? Is he in hell?
That demmed elusive Pimpernel?

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Percy...my hero!
The Scarlet Pimpernel series is a must read. Many people do not know that there are other books in the series besides the well known Scarlet Pimpernel.Sir Percy Hits Back is a great read for those of us waiting for a certain nemesis to get his just rewards.Great read and a must read for Sir Percy fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sir Percy is my other lover.
if you want Sir Percy and Lady Blakeney love, read this book. It recaptures the danger and romance of the first novel and shows a bit of Chauvlin's human side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
The goings on in Sir Percy Hits Back are a little bit different to the rest. Chauvelin features as a major character in a different way.

His daughter, Fleurette, is involved in an incident that brings her under suspicion of the committee. He realises that with the zealousness shown so far, and the number of innocent people murdered that she is likely doomed, even if he can try and sway the court.

There is not much hope that she can be saved, unless he turns to his bitter enemy, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chauvelins more human side...
Chauvelin, the arch-enemy of the Scarlet Pimpernel is ruthless and merciless, but he does have a tender spot in his heart. He loves his daughter Fleurette more than anyone else in the world.
When he is speaking to her, he is almost another person. It is really touching to see how gentle and caring he is. Baroness Orczy describes Chauvelins love for Fleurtte as "pertained to that of a wild beast for its young." "If she was destined to perish, then it would be by his own hand, not as a spectacle for the rabble to gloat on." He loves her in a fierce way tigerish way, fitting to his character.
This book lets you have an insight in to Chauvelins earlier and family life. The audacious Sir Percy plays only a small part in this book, but a important one. Chauvelins's devotion to Fleurette is something you never thought existed in the man, whose heart you thought was made out of stone.

When Fleurette is condemed as a traitor to the country, and is sentenced to death by the same laws Chauvelin helped to make, he has totry to save her, or at least die with her. Only when he has suffered intense, mental anguish for weeks does he realize that he must turn to his bitter enemy for help; the Scarlet Pimpernel, the only one who can save his beloved child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoker
Well.I wouldn't've thought Chauvelin had a heart, judging by the other stories about SP.But then, there are always two sides to a coin, and this was a definate quirk.

So after trying and trying and trying (and failing) to capture the Pimpernel, he finally goes to him for help.Maybe he finally had to concede that there was only one person who could do so.

His humanity is rather touching, you know, with his devotion to Fleurette and all (I mean, really. When you go to your arch-enemy for help...), and all the way to the end, you're wondering if he was really all that evil to begin with. ... Read more

Product Description
Baroness, (Emusca/Emmuska/Emma Magdalena Rosalia Marie Josepha Barbara) Orczy, Mrs Barstow (1865-1947) was a British novelist, playwright and artist of Hungarian origin. She was most notable for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Her parents left Hungary in 1868, fearful of the threat of a peasant revolution. They lived in Budapest, Brussels, and Paris, where Emma studied music without success. Finally, in 1880, the family moved to London where they lodged with their countryman Francis Pichler. In 1903, she and her husband, Montague MaClean Barstow, wrote a play based on one of her short stories about an English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney, Bart., who rescued French aristocrats from the French revolution: The Scarlet Pimpernel. She went on to write over a dozen sequels featuring Sir Percy Blakeney, his family, and the other members of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, of which the first, I Will Repay (1906), was the most popular. The last Pimpernel book, Mam'zelle Guillotine, was published in 1940. She also wrote popular mystery fiction and many adventure romances. ... Read more

Just's first visit to Paris since that memorable day when first he decided to sever his connection from the Republican party, of which he and his beautiful sister Marguerite had at one time been amongst the most noble, most enthusiastic followers. Already a year and a half ago the excesses of the party had horrified him, and that was long before they had degenerated into the sickening orgies which were culminating to-day in wholesale massacres and bloody hecatombs of innocent victims. With the death of Mirabeau the moderate Republicans, whose sole and entirely pure aim had been to free the people of France from the autocratic tyranny of the Bourbons, saw the power go from their clean hands to the grimy ones of lustful demagogues, who knew no law save their own passions of bitter hatred against all classes that were not as self-seeking, as ferocious as themselves. It was no longer a question of a fight for political and religious liberty only, but one of class against class, man against man, and let the weaker look to himself. The weaker had proved himself to be, firstly, the man of property and substance, then the law-abiding citizen, lastly the man of action who had obtained for the people that very same liberty of thought and of belief which soon became so terribly misused.Armand St. Just, one of the apostles of liberty, fraternity, and equality, soon found that the most savage excesses of tyranny were being perpetrated in the name of those same ideals which he had worshipped. His sister Marguerite, happily married in England, was the final temptation which caused him to quit the country the destinies of which he no longer could help to control. The spark of enthusiasm which he and the followers of Mirabeau h... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great aventure story
El Dorado by Baroness Orczy. Published by MobileReference (mobi).

This is a very good sequel to the Scarlet Pimpernel. More adventure awaits you, as in all of Orczy's books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Project Gutenberg re-print
In March, 2008 I acquired the Echo Library edition of this book. It has the most quirky typos and mis-spellings. Lots of them. Clearly the text was scanned with an optical character reader with the usual consequent wrong letters substituted: "tinder" for "under", "iii" for "in", etc. Careless proof reading I thought, to have not gone through it and corrected. It turns out, no proof reading by Echo. They have lifted the text unchanged from Project Gutenberg, the on-line site where you can find tens of thousands of public domain books in their entirety to read there. All the same quirky typos right down to the straight apostrophes as opposed to smart apostrophes.

I have never been quite so conscious of (poor) book design either, as I was with this Echo edition. The margins are cramped to the edges of the page too far and the book is the most awkward proportion. It is just ever so slightly too wide with too small font to scan down the page in reading quicker if you wish. A line requires at least two side by side scans to take it in (and I have wider peripheral vision than many).

As to literary comment, I don't find this book as well-written or flowing as "The Scarlet Pimpernel", the first in this many-episode series. Orczy's diction is at times more awkward than its predecessor (although that may be the Echo/Gutenberg edition and it poor proofing). In this story her descriptions of situations, emotions of various people are frequently very repetitive as well, making the flow of the action more stilted.

I will go on to read "The Elusive Pimpernel" next, the action of which actually takes place before El Dorado and to which, in El Dorado, there are references to the events of "The Elusive Pimpernel". I will not however, be buying any more editions of anything from Echo Library. I prefer books from those who take more care in their publications. Perhaps, also, I'll volunteer to do some proof-reading for Project Gutenberg. ... Read more

In the Way of the Scarlet Pimpernel a young woman tries to rescue a friend of hers from those dastardly employers of the guillotine. A little naive, she believes some documents she has in her possession will give her the leverage necessary.

The Committee are not rookies at the game of underhandedness and subterfuge, and she is facing a neck shortening herself. The Pimpernel must come to the rescue!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Now, first of all, I'd like to state that I am a Scarlet Pimpernel Fanatic, so it is veryhard to give one of his books only three stars. But in truth, this book is hardly about the Scarlet Pimpernel at all.

The main character, Josete, was exreamly boring, and horribly developed. The Baroness' stroke of genius, when creating Sir Percy, and Chauvelin, (not to mention Sir Andrew and Lord Tony) seems to have worn out. Chauvelin, is not introduced until half way thru the story, at least, and it is only then that the story takes on some real interest. But even the good story potential is squandered. The ending is and almost exact replica of the short story, "Needs Must." I will admit though that part of the story was ruined for me by a summary which I read on a website.

Sir Percy, is hardy in this at all, and we never see him playing the fool, or messing around with the league members at all. For a sportsman, he really does not seem the derive much enjoyment from adventure at all.

I found the story, overall predictable. This may be because I have read so many Pimpernel books that they have lost their charm, but I am inclined to think that Orczy was just sloppy. She spent so much time trying to develop new characters, that she ignores the old ones. I don't believe Sir Percy says "sink me!" in the entire book!

This book is not entirely devoid of appeal. Percy's converseation with M. What's-Your-Name? is quite interesting, but if you are not a true pimpernel adict, then I would suggest the more interesting titles, such as, The Elusive Pimpernel, The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel, or Eldorado.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Confusing
The Way of the Scarlet Pimpernel was a slight disapointment. The story didn't actually pick up until the last fifty pages and Sir Percy really wasn't in it that much. How exactly Sir Percy knew all about Josette's problems was never really explained nor did Orczy explain how he could go masquerading as a man with only one leg.Perhaps she meant that he had only one good leg or perhaps the reader should just accept that he could go masquerading as a man with only one leg simply because he isafterall, the Scarlet Pimpernel. If you've read any of the other Scarlet Pimpernel books you won't want to miss this one. It's worth reading just to see Chauvelin's reaction to again having his carefully laid schemes foiled.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Least Favorite...but Still a Good Read
This book was as well-written as the rest, but I was disappointed to find that the Scarlet Pimpernel/Sir Percy is only really featured in the last ten pages of the book. While Josette was interesting enough...I wanted more of the hero for whom the book was named.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I borrowed this book from a friend, and I absolutely loved it.I fell in love with it the same way as I did the original Scarlet Pimpernel book.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loved The ScarletPimpernel. ... Read more

Spirited away! There was no other word for it! In this book, Percy isn't opposed by Chauvelin, really, but instead, has to deal with a femme fatale, instead.

A young woman ends up in the bastille because of a complicated story involving the execution of her father. When the mob releases her after the storming, she goes the other way, and becomes a feared agent of the blade, and is in fact nicknamed after it.

She works to take revenge on those who wronged her, and their families. This is where the Pimpernel and company work to try and stop her and save the innocent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little anti-climatic, but Percy is still made of awesome!
There are some really fantastic SP moments in this book. You get to delve a little deeper into Percy's true character. As usual, Marguerite is a little over-dramatic in the beginning. It has a really interesting plot line that will have you wondering how Percy and Marguerite will get out of trouble yet again. The ending however, was a little anti-climatic for me. It is only 261 pages, so you'll fly through it. Overall and enjoyable read. If you are an avid SP fan, like me, you won't regret getting this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good except for Marguerite
The level of adventure in this one is great!I read it the other night and couldn't put it down.In fact, I stayed up ridiculously late reading it until I finished.

Readers are treated to a deeper look into Chauvelin's character.I, for one, even found myself liking him a little... at least in comparison to his comarades in the Revolution... even though he was the most vicious in his attempts to harm our hero and his wife.

Percy was also interesting is this - as usual.Of course his actions as the Scarlet Pimpernel were entertaining as always. But also his relationships with both Chauvelin and Marguerite were allowed to develop a little more.As was stated in another review here, he does get in a few really good jabs at Chauvelin and there is also a long conversation between the two in which their reactions to each other can be further enjoyed.I was also interested in the discovery of just where his relationship with Marguerite sits in his priorities (one of the biggest points of the book I think).Previous books had alluded to the answer... but in this one the answer was made clear again.

As for Marguerite, I can't give her much in the way of points at all.She was both very whiny and yes, stupid. Not at all one of the cleverest women in Europe (even Chauvelin was in agreement on this within the book).Still, I found myself sort of understanding some of her concerns... and a few of her thoughts. And certainly I was still hoping for the best for her by the end. Again, I did like seeing some of interactions between her in Percy... especially at public gatherings.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Tightly Woven Adventure
This is my second foray into Pimpernel literature. This is actually the third book chronologically.I'm not sure yet how episodic the story works out...this is evidently taking place after the first novel but I didn't feel like I missed out on anything by skipping the second book.It also didn't really feel like much would have been missed by skipping the first book (although the first did involve more character development of the core characters).I would recommend reading the first novel first, especially if you know nothing about the Pimpernel story, but I don't think it's vital.

This Pimpernel adventure was a fun read and well worth reading.Orczy's writing style is fluid and easy to read and follow and her characters are vivid and interesting. The plot of this book was very intriguing. The Pimpernel is pitted against his enemy from the first novel, the French agent Chauvelin.Chauvelin has been given one final chance from Robespierre to catch the Pimpernell with the ultimatum that the world will either be rid of the Pimpernel or Chauvelin by the end of the adventure.

The plot that Chauvelin comes up with to capture the Pimpernel is fairly diabolical and truly seems foolproof. It stands as evidence of Orczy's creative ingenuity and the fullness of her characters, especially as each intricate detail plays out.It exposes Chauvelin's arrogance and his prideful desire for personal and lasting vengeance.I was very satisfied with the machinations of the plot until I realized that the remaining pages were growing few and I began to anticipate a potentially dissatisfying ending.

Upon finally reaching the climactic wrap up to the adventure, I admit to being somewhat disappointed in the way things played out.Though honestly, I expected an even worse ending based on how tightly she had tied the net around our hero.I saw little hope for an exciting and viable escape (and I doubt it's any spoiler to anyone that the hero had to escape). The solution provided wasn't entirely satisfactory in my mind, but it worked out well enough, especially considering the era in which the events took place.

Before I wrap up this report, I want to comment on one of the things that this novel does that I especially enjoy. In many of the novels I've read, the central heroic character is very close to the reader. We are often either right on the shoulder or even within the head of our heroic protagonist. However, in the case of Pimpernel, Orczy plays with this concept and puts us inside the head of many of the peripheral characters, even some of the very minor characters, but never lets us truly get inside the mind of the titular hero.It reminds me vaguely of the way Conan Doyle keeps us from directly knowing the inner workings of Holmes' mind.In the same way, we find ourself aligned closely with Marguerite's fears and Chauvelin's scheming, but we never align ourselves directly with the heroic thoughts of the Pimpernel. This adds to the suspense in wondering just how he could possibly escape the tightly woven trap laid for him.

I think I enjoyed this book better than the first Pimpernel story, but they were both a lot of fun.I hope to be able to track down more of them to read. They're a great bit of fun for any fan of historical adventure combined with a touch of humor.

You can't catch him! A French agent is sent to England undercover as a French diplomat, to try and capture Percy Blakeney (or, actually, his alter-ego, the Scarlet Pimpernel) and get him back to France where they can lop him for all the humiliation and trouble that he has caused.

Said dodgy Frenchman with the help of a sneaky French actress manages to get his hands on Marguerite, and has her in prison.

This leaves the Pimpernel to come up with a plan that will make the Frenchies look silly again.

Definitely an entertaining adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL
The Elusive Pimpernel follows closely on the heals of the first book of the series, The Scarlet Pimpernel. It seems to me that Baroness Orczy was pouring out her own heart feelings through that of Lady Blackney. Her excellent use of discription makes your own heart ache till near bursting with devotion, love, passion and even fear. There is never a dull moment in this wonderfully wriiten book. I love it and will read it over and over. ... Read more
