4-0 out of 5 stars Saucy
patterson's language here is quite sluggish, though the plot moves feverishly. it has enough intrigues, explosions, and murders to satisfy the reader's appetite, but patterson is no match compared to the other good writers of this genre.

3-0 out of 5 stars The plot occasionally flows, occasionally stumbles.
First things first - if you are at all familiar with the American economy, you'll have to suspend your sense of disbelief throughout the book. The premise has American terrorists bombing Wall Street and stealing 2 billion dollars worth of stock certificates in order to destroy the American economy and take down the entire free market system throughout the world. Now, it takes place in the 80s but still, even in the 80s, 2 billion dollars was just a drop in the bucket. It wouldn't make a bit of difference, especially since it was spread out over 20-30 giant conglomerates.

What makes the story work is the appealing main character, Arch Carrol. He is hardcore but still human and likeable. This is definitely not one of Patterson's best works, but it is not totally bad either.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that deserves a standing ovation!!
I know others out there may feel to disagree with me but having reading this book after the events of Spetember 11, it was totally shocking realizing that this book was written in 1986. There were terrorist activies back then & still America never saw the warning signs. I think this book try to display of what can happen and strongly enough, it did, in a totally different aspect. If I read this book before the events of September 11, I would of thought nothing like this can happen and this can be made into an entertaining made for TV or Hollywood movie. Now the events in this book seem terrifying because alot of lives were lost because of terrorist acts cause by a militia group called the Green Band. The main character Arch Carroll, I felt was well portrayed & totally fit the book. Instead of your mister nice guy do gooder, you had your rough around the edges detective. I feel this book is strongly entertaining!! The end caught me by surprise because it was totally unexpected. For those who were affected due to the events of September 11, I wouldn't recommened this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even steal this book. Pathetic
No research, No knowledge of economics or the stock market.
Not a clue about anything but the names of weapons. Other than the fact that guns go bang, he knows nothing about them.

What color is the beret worn by the Army Special Forces? Is it blood red? The author thinks it is.

All seeing enemies with perfect knowledge. Henchmen who do this stuff for what reason? This stuff went out with the yellow peril in the thirties.

The main villian, who can plan this so called perfect crime, does a Robin Hood which would never get by the worst IRS auditor in the world.

This thing reads like the plot of a really bad third rate action thriller movie. You know the kind, with the star who is famous for 15 minutes for some other activity, like some ex jock.

The plot looks like someone found this book and decided that with a lot more work and some actual knowledge they could make a Die Hard movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not his best
A re-pub of a previous work, the adventure that Arch Carroll takes us on is thrilling and fast, but not nearly has engaging as Alex Cross's feats.I wasn't sure who I wanted to success here because I didn't have a good understanding of what motivated the characters.I attribute the lack ofcharacter development to very short chapters (some fewer than 3 pages) andthe need to focus on getting everyone into the sack as soon as possible. If you are a Patterson fan, then by all means purchase this book.If not, then you would be better off choosing one of his later works. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for Audio
It was great to have three books at the ready. I really got into these books

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love James Patterson
I listen to Audio CD's while I am setting at my computer working. James Patterson's audiobooks are easy to listen to while working without be distracting. This is not the case with some other authors I listen to while working. Great way to be entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winning audio
THE 4TH OF JULY, THE 5TH HORSEMAN, THE 6TH TARGET are all included in this second box set of James Patterson's 'Women's Murder Club' series, Women's Murder Club Box Set V. 2, making for a winning audio listen powered by Carolyn McCormick's film background and fine voice. From a San Francisco female police lieutenant's showdown and the disgrace of the department as a result to her association with an attorney investigating mysterious patient deaths and a crime spree involving the kidnapping of children from rich families, these are fine connected crime-solving thrillers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great crime mystery with a woman's touch.
I have enjoyed all three books within the set as I travel to and from my office each day. The full set took about one month to finish and I was so enthralled that I wanted to get back into a hot car to continue the story.

A great book to read to develop an understanding of the life of a person suffering from Tourette Syndrome. A very worthwhile, very fast read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Med Head
This book is a soft cover copy of "Against Medical Advise"...but if you haven't read it....DO IT!

4-0 out of 5 stars One young man's struggle: I'm glad it turned out well for him
The true story of Cory Friedman's efforts to control his Tourette's and OCD, along with his violent temper and addiction issues (drinking and smoking). The book contains many brutal, pull-no-punches descriptions of his tics, his meltdowns, his anger and his frustration. His family stands valianty by him; his sister is seldom mentioned. After a wrenching 13-year battle (approx. ages 5-18) Cory's symptoms, which he previously was unable to control, start to fade almost naturally, through an "Outward Bound" type wilderness experience and time spent at a neurological clinic where the treatment encourages him to focus on his tics and anxieties, rather than try to suppress them.It also helps when he weans himself off most of the doctor-prescribed drugs he was taking.Though I wish this young man all the best, and the story is interesting as a peek into a world of pain and suffering, I don't feel there are any greater lessons to be drawn, or that Cory's experiences can be generalized in any way for the greater good of readers.Maybe they don't need to be and the point is that Cory told his story and I can now read it.Note: This book was released a year or so ago, titled Against Medical Advice.Med Head, with its eye-catching cover and an introduction by Ellen Hopkins, is the same book, aimed at young adults. If you are an older teen reader and you liked Med Head, you might have a look at both Beautiful Boy (by father David Sheff) and Tweak (by son Nic Sheff.)

5-0 out of 5 stars MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero
MED HEAD, James Patterson and Hal Friedman's young adult version of the #1 New York Times bestseller AGAINST MEDICAL ADVICE, is about a boy's experiences growing up with the rare neurological disorder of Tourette's Syndrome with OCD. It's a private view of Cory Friedman's home and school life as told by Cory himself, from age five through his post-high school years.

Cory is five years old when his troubles begin. While playing a video game, he feels his first compulsion to jerk his neck. It is involuntary, caused by "miswiring of his brain," and is one of the many tics and physical and verbal compulsions his mind would present through the years. He calls these years "the battle against my mind," and his symptoms are embarrassing and physically debilitating at a young age. With his first trip to the doctor, Cory and his family start down a long road of suffering and worry that doesn't end until after his teenage years are over.

Through many years of treatment, Cory is put on handfuls of medications. The Friedmans meet numerous doctors, some of whom are helpful and others of whom are just insulting and harmful. His parents and sister, Jessie, try their best to support him through the physical and emotional stress, knowing there's only more of it to come. Love and family support are often not enough for Cory to feel happy, and he has to do without close friendships or outside understanding for years. All he wants is for the people around him to "get him," and one of the most difficult aspects of the situation is the Friedmans' realization of Cory's daily embarrassment and social isolation from having a disease that no one understands or empathizes with.

Because Cory's disorder is exacerbated by stress and anxiety, reactions he gets make things worse. Kids at school and teachers often treat him as if his disorder is contrived or controllable. He's frequently made fun of, and this makes his tics and compulsions more exaggerated. None of his treatments help much, and at some point, he begins thinking of himself as a "med head." He is on high-dose meds and often can't deal with the side effects, which range from intense agitation to more pronounced tics, to keeping him up at night and leaving him physically and emotionally exhausted. He gains weight and becomes clinically depressed on certain drugs. Yet somehow, with the support of his family, Cory gets through this. After years of hoping and wishing and wondering about a cure (or at least relief from symptoms), he discovers he's ready to call it quits with all drugs and experimental treatments.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, Cory finds that there's one thing he does feel better on: alcohol. He uses it to escape his unhappiness. At age 17, he has absolutely no idea what he's doing and no plans for the future, but his alcohol use is no joke. It goes way past common teenage partying to where he is passing out drunk at home --- a lot. Once his parents recognize the need to intervene, their next step is a risky one: they send him to a teenage wilderness camp in bitter-cold Wyoming, essentially forcing him to discover meaning in his life while surviving camping in ice and snow.

With great, personal storytelling by bestselling author James Patterson as well as writer Hal Friedman (the boy's father), readers are presented with an honest view of what it's like to grow up with a rare neurological disorder. The story is based on Cory's memories and put together through interviews. And Cory is a kid who will win you over from the minute the story begins. In the moment he calls his mom "his angel" with the claim that she saved him, he had my vote! The Friedmans are amazing, never faltering in their love and support even while it had to be killing them to watch him go through all this. Yet it is Cory himself who finds the will to get past the anger of living with a debilitating illness and then surpass everyone's expectations of him. It's through his hard work that opportunities arise, and his accomplishments end up going beyond those of many who have had smaller hurdles to overcome.

MED HEAD is an inspirational story, and I agree with Patterson when he calls Cory a hero. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thriller
Not all of the stories in this book were thrilling, but it gave me a chance to see what authors I would be interested in reading more of their books. I was surprised that they could write stories that were intriguing even though they were so short. So if you wanted to find some books about mysterys this one would be a good one to get to sample the writing of these authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great variety of stories.
I found this book to be wonderful.Within its 664 pages(paperback) there are stories from every viewpoint, and every style.I definitely found a lot of authors I hadn't read before that I will now seek further.I'm fairly new to the thriller genre, but feel as though I've had a great introduction with this fine collection. If you are a fan of the short story, or thrillers in general you will not be disappointed.Happy Reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to new favorites
I may have found some new authors to check out thanks to this compilation. The tricky thing with a compliation is that the styles and plots and subject matter are so spread out that you're bound to be excited by some stories and bored by others. There was only one story that I simply could not finish because the material was sooooo dated; a story about a Cold-War spy.The good thing is that it introduced me to some authors that I might not have taken a chance on otherwise.
I'm not much on short stories because it typically cannot offer much in the way of character development or background.Seems like you just get into the characters' monds and the story is over which can be a frustration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Sampler and Introduction to Various Authors
I enjoyed the bios of the authors at the beginning of the stories.
As a writer myself, listening to the stories on the audio cd was very helpful in discerning the varied rhythms and voices of the stories. I am a psychologist by day and The Portal was my favorite.
What wonderful group affiliation between all these talented authors.
I hope they will continue to welcome new thriller writers into their fold!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled to have this one available
There are a few reasons you should read this book.First, it is likely you will get a taste of the writings of authors you otherwise would not have ever tried.
Second, there are variations here on what defines a "thriller."Don't be prejudiced by your own definition of the term -- read these with an open mind to possibilities.
Third, if your life is as hectic as mine, it is great to be able to dip in for 20 or 30 minutes and enjoying a complete quality story; there are many of them in this collection.
Finally, many reviewers here write about how the collection was weak except for... and then they name the few stories they think were best.Peruse the reviews and you will see they are not all the same few stories... all in all, most of the stories were enjoyed by someone here!Which is to say that the lower ratings are because of TASTE, not QUALITY.Enjoy the breadth, indulge in your favorites, and don't be deterred by the selective ratings of the reviewers here.
A quality anthology -- can't wait for Vol 2!! ... Read more

Enter four unforgettable women, all friends...Lindsay, a homicide inspector in the city's police department...Claire, a medical examiner...Jill, an assistant D.A....and Cindy, a reporter who has just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle. Joining forces, pooling their talents, courage, and brains, they have one goal. To find, trap, and outwit the most diabolical and terrifying killer ever imagined.

2ND CHANCE:2ND CHANCE reconvenes the Women's Murder Club. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

3RD DEGREE: Detective Lindsay Boxer is jogging along a beautiful San Francisco street when a fiery explosion rips through the neighborhood. A town house owned by an Internet millionaire is immediately engulfed in flames, and when Lindsay plunges inside to search for survivors, she finds three people dead. Lindsay asks her friends to help her figure out who is committing these murders-and why they are intent on killing someone every three days.Even more terrifying, the killer has targeted one of the four friends who call themselves the Women's Murder Club.Which one will it be?While the investigation rages furiously, Lindsay works very closely with a federal officer assigned to the case. At the same time, she learns that one member of the Women's Murder Club is hiding a secret so dangerous and unbelievable that it could destroy them all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Start of new women-led murder series
1ST TO DIE - 4 stars
The first story in this collection is '1st To Die' which introduces Lindsay Boxer and the Women's Murder Club. Lindsay is a San Francisco homicide Inspector and she has been put on a case where a married couple were killed on the evening of their wedding. Lindsay is partnered with a man from the mayor's office, Chris Raleigh, and on the same day discovers she has an unusual blood disorder which is potentially fatal. Lindsay's energy is directed toward the investigation as well as her health and as she investigates the first murder and another two 'bride and groom' killings she finds herself drawn into a group of other women for support - Cindy Thomas, a reporter; Claire Washburn, a medical examiner; and Jill Bernhardt, an assistant DA.

The book seemed to draw to a conclusion fairly early but then there were several twists which made the story move in new directions. The interactions between Lindsay and Chris Raleigh were well written, as were Lindsay's moments of emotion as she battles her disease and tries to get to the bottom of the murders. However there were some rather cringe-worthy moments when the girls seemed to have to say "I love you" to each other, as well as having to be vastly successful and feisty as well as in touch with their femininity. Those who like to read more about the murder scenes might find this story a disappointment as it seems to be more about Lindsay and her feelings than detective work. I also felt that the 'baddie' seemed rather comic-book bad and his behaviour at the very end of the story was rather implausible. Still I enjoyed the story and this new series of characters.

The narrator of this story did a good job but sometimes her voice became so quiet that it was difficult to hear over road noise when driving and listening, which is probably how many people will hear this story. In order to hear the quiet sections the volume had to be raised rather more than I would like for the louder sections. However this was an excellent audiobook and whiled away a long journey very effectively!

2ND CHANCE - 3 Stars
This is the second story in the series and follows on a couple of months after the shocking conclusion to the previous book. In this story Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to Lieutenant, finds herself investigating some race hate crimes. She discovers fairly quickly that the crimes are being committed by a person who is part of a specific white group with an identifying tattoo - but it proves very difficult to pin down exactly who he is. When he starts toying with Lindsay and the police department, including killing someone close to her as well as attacking her friends, the stakes are even higher.

There are some additional side-plots in this story, including the return of Lindsay's father into her life, some significant events in Jill Bernhardt's life and a romance for Cindy Thomas. As in the previous book, the Women's Murder Club seems a rather unnecessary plot device where Lindsay talks over the case with her friends.

The writing style in this book felt at times rather clunky. I lost count of the time James Patterson used phrases like "My heart was exploding in my chest" or some other overblown description for Lindsay's excitement or fear. Although the action kept going I found some of the events a little difficult to swallow and I wasn't as gripped by this story as I had been by the previous one in the series.

The reader of this book had a less enjoyable voice than the reader of the previous one with a rather harsh delivery at times. Chapters where the narrator is the murderer were read by a male reader and unfortunately the volume on these chapters was notably quieter so that the volume had to be increased to hear him properly, then reduced again for the female narrator.

3RD DEGREE - 3 Stars
"Familiarity breeds contempt". I was struck by the truth of this saying when listening to the third of the Women's Murder Club audiobooks. Although the murder plot is completely different from that in the previous two books, James Patterson's writing style in this series is really beginning to grate. Once again I was struck by how unrealistic the conversation between the different women is - I mean, I can't think that I've ever gushed that I love various female friends whilst drinking at a bar. Perhaps American women do this but I'm not sure. Anyway, Patterson's writing is getting terribly repetitive in terms of his description of peoples' emotions: "Lindsay's eyes bulged out" (we had several people with bulging eyes in this story - what the heck is it supposed to mean?). Every event that happens is followed by a description of Lindsay's heart beating faster, her hairs on the back of her neck standing on end, her stomach churning, the aforementioned bulging eyes... it just feels like lazy writing.

It's not all lazy writing - in fact Patterson makes a bold plot move in this story which was surprising. However the weaknesses in the previous stories in terms of plot come into play here too - how is it that the vital piece of information is magically found by Lindsay, that her hunches are pretty much always correct, that she is able to put things together that no-one else can? There is a completely farcical point in this story where Lindsay decides to go back to the house that was a murder scene, looks through a cupboard, finds a set of newspaper clippings, reads one thirty-year-old clipping and realises it's the key to the case. I mean, how likely is that?

In some ways this story is reminiscent of the previous one in that long-ago events affect what's happening today. There's also another romance for Lindsay with rather a big cheese (who seemed a bit too good to be true to me). The murder plot is never easy to predict (partly because of the random coincidences that fall into Lindsay's lap) and it was a fairly easy story to listen to but it felt too much like 'murder story by numbers' to me and the completely unrealistic characterisation of the women jarred so badly with me that I found myself sighing in annoyance on many occasions. The final chapter was toe-curlingly cheesy to this British reader's sensibilities - the over-the-top romance side was laughable.

There is some good plotting in here, along with some lazy plotting; there are some exciting scenes, along with some dull ones; there are some interesting characters, unfortunately vastly outweighed by the cardboard ones. However overall this story felt repetitive, unengaging and badly written. I can't see any great reason to follow this series any further.

3-0 out of 5 stars Awesome...and yet disappoimting..
Don't get me wrong...the Women's Murder Club series is fantastic...I can't even believe they cancelled the TV show..that's another story. My problem with this item is that the discs skip...almost everyone. It seems like every crucial point in the plot is disrupted by the disc skipping and missing chunks of dialog.
It seems that they are cheaply made. Otherwise I recommend reading this series...it's great! ... Read more

Acclaim for Aiden James:

“Aiden James has written a deeply psychological, gripping tale that keeps the readers hooked from page one.”
—Bookfinds review for THE FORGOTTEN EDEN

“Not only is Aiden James a storyteller par excellence, but his material for his story is riveting.”
—Huntress Reviews

“The hook to this excellent suspense thriller is the twists that will keep readers wondering what is going on as nothing is quite what it seems. Adding to the excitement is that the audience will wonder whether the terror is an evil supernatural creature or an amoral human…Aiden James provides a dark thriller that grips fans from the opening.”
—Harriet Klausner, Amazon’s #1 book reviewer for THE FORGOTTEN EDEN

“Aiden James writing style flows very easily and I found that CADES COVE snowballed into a very gripping tale. Clearly the strengths in the piece were as the spirit's interaction became prevalent with the family… The Indian lore and ceremonies and the flashbacks to Allie Mae's (earthly) demise were very powerful. I think those aspects separated the work from what we've seen before in horror and ghost tales.”
—Evelyn Klebert, author of A GHOST OF A CHANCE and DRAGONFLIES

Jimmy and Fiona Alea investigate ghosts, hauntings and other paranormal phenomena in Nashville, TN.When they, and their ghost hunting crew Nash-Vegas Paranormal, discover the brutal murder of famous country singer Candi Starr, it's traumatic but not going to derail their lives. But the death doesn't stop with just the singer. As the killer tears his way through Candi's Nashville connections, the Aleas must try to protect their friends and family, using Fiona's link to the spirit world to help stop the killer.

Side plots follow NVP's ghost investigations, which contribute to some of the creepier moments in the book, as well as the funnier ones. The image of a ghost hanging in a plantation home foyer will stay with you.Jimmy is a great narrator, mixing enough snarky comments in that you believe him as the tension rachets up.There's also a good sense of place; you can feel the humidity and hear the southern accents.

I really enjoyed this mystery.A bit Southern Gothic, a bit of rock and roll backstage, great jabs at corporate culture, some twisty serial killings and enough ghost-hunting specifics to give it a flavor of a procedural, this book is worth the read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good read...
This was a really good read.Kept me interested so I found myself picking up the book often so I could find out what happens next.Finished it in two days because others tasks could wait.I consider myself a fairly intelligent person ergo I was convinced I had it figured out before reaching the end.Ha!I was surprised - did not see it coming.Likable characters and laughs along the way.- R.C. A fantastic mystery! Aiden James is a fresh new face in supernatural mystery writing and will make a mark in suspense for years to come. DEADLY NIGHT features a winning combination of fun, likable characters, real world haunts told from an expert's point of view (the author is a real life paranormal investigator), and all the danger, suspense, and twists that any mystery reader could hope for.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author is not accurate
I read the first book 'Sweet Dreams' and thought it was good enough to download the second only to find discrepancies in the first 2 chapters that didn't sync with what was said in the first book!!! I don't appreciate authors who think their readers are that stupid and we're not going to remember details from one book to the next. I will not purchase another one. If you are a stickler for details don't buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream On
I loved this book. I had downloaded it to my ipad by accident. I thought that I was getting James Patterson and just started reading and loved the book. He is very much like James Patterson one of my favorite writers. I didn't want to put the book down, there was always something going on. The characters are great you feel you know them and like them. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes James Patterson or books like his. I read his next book Sweat Dreams and loved that too and can't wait for the next book to come out.

1-0 out of 5 stars ONE RELEASE OF THIS BOOK WAS ENOUGH...
This is a bad book with a story line that is fairly simple. There are two young girls, both pregnant and both claiming to be virgins. One, Kathleen, rich and privileged, lives in the United States. The other, Colleen, lives in a small country village in Ireland. According to a secret missive from Our Lady of Fatima, one virgin will give birth to Satan's child, the Anti-Christ, while the other will give birth to the child of God, a new Messiah.

Meanwhile, all over the world apocalyptic manifestations are sprouting up. Pestilence, drought, famine, and and other evil portents seem to dominate the global landscape. Something strange is going on, and it appears as if the forces of good and evil are gathering about, girding themselves for one final battle.

Father Rosetti, an emissary from the vatican, has been entrusted with a secret mission by the Pope relative to these two young virgins, and it is one that will sorely try his faith. Meanwhile, former nun turned private investigator, Anne Fitzgerald, has been retained by the Archdiocese of Boston to look into the phenomena of a possible immaculate conception with regards to these two young women who inhabit disparate worlds. Anne must not only confront the unknown in order to assist these two young women, she must also confront her own powerful emotions and a destiny she could not have imagined.

Written in 1980 and originally released under the title "Virgin", this book has been updated by the author to make it appear as if it were a more contemporary work and released again under the title "Cradle and All". The book is riddled with ridiculous cliches from the horror genre and lacks any real tension. It has been released again to capitalize on the author's success with his Alex Cross series of thrillers. Unfortunately, it is not cut from the same bolt of cloth and lacks the quality of both writing and plot that earmarks his Alex Cross novels.

Virgin
Althoughsomewhat of a departure for Patterson fans this is one of the more intriguing books I have read in awhile. The plot is simple for someone not of a Catholic background but a complicated one for those with an understanding of the the workings of the church. As always Patterson did his homework on this one.

But other than that...! Really, this book was so badly written, the story was full of plot holes and awkward devices, and the ending was ridiculous. I would have stopped reading long before the end, but I was reading on the recommendation of a friend who wanted to discuss it. I can only assume at this point thatI must have unknowlingly offended her and this was my punishment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top Read from a different James Patterson
I too was looking for more James Patterson books, when I stumbled on this title. After researching some more, I realised this James Patterson has sinced passed on, however, what an enjoyable read. Albeit, not the regular James Patterson that we all know quite well. The story has many twists and turns, and takes life back to a simpler time. The life of Five Lowry is enduring even for the 21 Century in that the story can be relayed even to todays aspects. I don't care if others are seeking the regular James Patterson and are disappointment to learn it's not. It's still a good read, and can't want to read the continuing stories, albeit, there are only two more. It would make a terrific film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Typos galore
I also bought this book thinking it was an old one by the more famous James Patterson, or perhaps a new one that had been released online.(It was distributed by "the world's leading online library".)Anyway, I sure was not happy when I started reading it & found a typo on the second page or thereabouts!Whoever proofed this book should be fired. It was very distracting.I also felt like the author got some of his characters mixed up throughout the book but maybe it was that I didn't care enough to keep them all straight. And I sure didn't want to go back & try to figure it out.I guess the book was OK.I did actually want to finish it but I would not recommend it to anyone else, especially with the hefty pricetag that it comes with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrong author-good book
I, too, purchased this thinking it was by THE James Patterson but I have not been disappointed.A 60's graduate of Miami University (Ohio), sorority member and resident of Oxford, Ohio, I am familiar with Ohio University and Greek life. The story makes me smile as I remember some of the same experiences.I would recommend it to any Ohio collegiate, graduate or Greek member.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointing
I was very disappointed to receive the book and find the author - James Patterson - was not who I expected, but decided to take a chance anyway. The story was interesting, but I must admit, I was so unnerved by the poor job of editing that I became distracted easily. The book is published by an Online Library that apparently does not proofread before printing. The pages are filled with typographical errors and misuse of words and I found myself wanting to reach for a red pencil to circle all the mistakes rather than concentrating on the author's intent.I spent nearly $30 to receive a poor quality paperback book that will definitely find its way to the back my bookshelves - maybe into the "bad book box" in the corner of my laundry room.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PLEASING MISTAKE TO MAKE
I ordered this book for my wife thinking it was written by the slightly more famous James Patterson who's books she devours avidly. As an Englishman living and working around Athens Ohio, I found this novel really interesting as it provides a great insight into both the area and College life in the US. In addition I also found The Thirteen to be an entertaining and grippingly realistic story, something I cannot always say about the authors alter ego. This book cleverly combines the journey of our freshman hero Five Lowry as he discovers the great mysteries of life, namely beer, women and commerce with a murder mystery. No mean feat in my opinion! My wife was somewhat grieved by my mistake, personally I was rather pleased and hope all my future errors turn out as happily. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Young Boys Only
After reading the back cover, I thought the story had a great premise. However, it certainly is for only 9-12 years old.

I can see young boys revelling in the adventures of Daniel X, and the gross descriptions of especially cheese in many, varied forms.

A quick read, although I found myself drifting off, thinking of other things, while I was reading, and then had to go back a few chapters to reread what I had missed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
I think I was 13 when I read this book as soon as it came out. I hated it then. I see these adult reviewers saying that it's only good for a kid...That's not true. Even kids hate this book.

I'm a fan of Maximum Ride, but this is not similar or even close to the same quality. The kid has powers, he fights aliens...Maybe only a 10 year old boy would like this book. It felt rushed and jumbled. The plot was weak and borderline stupid. Maybe Patterson thought he could make money off this book, but truthfully, it just ruined his reputation for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Yet!
Virgin was given to me amongst a few other books and seeing that it was a James Patterson book, I decided to read it at once. I was amazed at the publication date and his picture above all.I have read most of his books and enjoyed all of them, so I started it right away. It was far and above his best book. For one thing, it was different and an amazing surprise after Alex Cross, etc. The suspense surpassed anything else he has written. Write a few more along this line, Mr. Patterson. It was refreshing and above all..a timely topic in a spiritual way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cross by James Patterson
One of Patterson's best!Thrilling, spell-binding, action oriented; great character development.I became completely absorbed in the story and couldn't wait to find out what happens next.I read the book in two days. The plot was calculating, typical of James Patterson, and his writing style developed it exquisitely. For action-packed mystery thrillers "Cross" is right up at the top of the list.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVIL AT ITS VILEST . . .
Cross by James Patterson is an excellent read. Good pace, with the right smattering of back-story. No overwhelming narratives or stage setting. Characters easily identifiable and readily drawn to. I've "read" a lot of bad guys, but Michael Sullivan - rapist and assassin - is evil at its vilest.

I so see Morgan Freeman in Alex Cross, in his dialogue and mannerisms, dry humor. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the distinguished Freeman is one of my all-time favorite actors. And that voice . . . ahhhh.

Came across this novel at a resale shop and what a pleasure it's been to read. If you like a finely honed tale of suspense, you won't be disappointed. I'll be seeking out more from this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who Killed Cross's Wife?
I became a James Patterson fan with the movie, "Kiss the Girls," starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd. I loved the way the female protagonist was a match for the serial killer villain and how she fought back against him. Upon reading the book, I became a fan of Alex Cross as well. The middle class cop/FBI agent/psychiatrist raising his two kids without their dead mother, but with the help of his grandmother, "Nana-mama," charmed and intrigued me.

Since then, I've read a few Patterson novels that were pretty sketchy on plot and characters, but the Alex Cross books hold up pretty well. Maybe it's because I have already formed the characters in my mind, and can fill in any gaps the author leaves out while writing about them, but I think his portrayal of piano-playing, music-loving detective remains true.

In "Cross," Alex Cross tries to leave the FBI to spend more time with his family, but once again gets involved in a case to which he can't say no, a serial rapist and killer who MAY have murdered his beloved wife, Maria, ten years earlier. It's an easy, suspenseful read, that doesn't pass through your brain like skim milk, but which doesn't require much heavy lifting either. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO JUVENILE FOR JUVENILES?
Unsure what the age group is for this series; my young teen found it to be too juvenile for them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sky Watching
Daniel is your everyday, average kind of guy. Well, he is at first glance, but when this kid comes riding into your town on his motorcycle, it's a good bet that he'll show you he's much more than average, and in the end, you'll be thanking him for saving the day.

That's what happens when Daniel X, Alien Hunter, comes to Holliswood, where the 5th most wanted evil alien in the galaxy is hatching a diabolical plan and every person with a television, computer or portable device -- that is, everyone -- will be his victim. Daniel will need every one of his super-powers and his mind-created allies to help him save the day.

In //Daniel X: Watch the Skies// James Patterson and Ned Rust tell the story of Daniel and his battle against the evil Number 5. It's a campy, easy read for young kids, but is a bit too simple for tweens and young adults. A few limitations placed on Daniel would have made things more interesting. Without them, this book is average from start to finish.

this is a book i would reccomend for someone who wants a book that is different but addicting! i loved this book! when i found out about the series i thought it would be dumb but i was proved wrong best alien-book series i have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting take for James Patterson
James Patterson tries to do the Harry Potter thing and it works. Characters are interesting and enchanting. Multiple books about the same character are out. All are worth your time and money. These books read very fast. You won't want to put them down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alien Hunter
Daniel X is a teen-age alien hunter with some special powers of his own. He rides a motorbike and can do wheelies on his front tire. He has four imaginary friends, but unlike most kids, he can materialize them and they often help him out when he needs help, or just keep him company when he needs company.

The town of Holliswood is being taken over by aliens - from outer-space. These particular aliens are able to manipulate the radio waves, and t.v. stations to control humans. They also like to eat humans, after they make them dance around, filming them for entertainment. The head alien is a director. Even though there are some horrific things that happen to humans, the way it's written it's not very graphic or gross. Most teens have watched plenty of movies and shows that contain much worse than is shown in this book.

Daniel X needs to find a way to stop the aliens from taking over the town, and eventually the whole world for the purpose of filming, eating and using the world and it's inhabitants as entertainment for the rest of the universe. But the alien in charge of this epic project, (alien no. 5) seems to always be one step ahead of Daniel X, and in fact is planning to use Daniel in the finale of the series that he's filming. Daniel X meets a young girl and her strange parents. He is has quite a challenge solving this crisis, things go wrong but he perseveres.

I found the narrative of this book interesting, and the dialogue between characters was pretty good. There's some snarky dialogue between aliens and Daniel X, and intelligent dialogue between Daniel X and his friends/family. Though gross things are happening, there isn't over the top descriptions, but there is enough to keep a teen or tween interested in the story. Daniel X also is not a do it yourself type of hero, he takes advice and help from his friends...although they are a product of his imagination. Maybe because it's written from the pov of a teenage boy, one who has been hunting aliens, but there doesn't seem to be much to his personality - there's a little history we learn as we read, and little things he quips. He seems to care about animals and humans. It's just not very in depth - the presenting of his personality.

This was a cute, light/horror sci-fi book. The only thing that kind of got to me, was more the set up of the book. There are 91 chapters in this 251 page book. How can that be, do you wonder? most of these chapters are two pages long. As in half of one page (the beginning of the chapter) and half or a little over half of the second page (that would be the ending of this epic chapter). So really, I believe this book could have been condensed into 125 pages (approximately). I don't know if the authors meant for the book to be set up this way as a dramatic way of separating scenes, or if this was done to "flesh out" the book. There were quite a few of the 2-page chapters that could have been combined. A few of the chapters were really a continuation of the previous chapter. That's my only complaint of the book, and it's not anything to do with content or writing talent.

Overall this is a entertaining book, a light read even with the horror aspects. ...

“Aiden James is insanely talented!”

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This was a very easy book to read and I couldn't hardly put it down after I started it.It's interesting, has a little romance in it, some historical references to it, as well as some stuff about indians and rituals. It was suspenseful and a real page-turner.I liked it a lot and would recommend it to any one of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary As Hell
An absolutely stunning achievement in supernatural thrills. A modern-day classic. Read CADES COVE with the lights on. Seriously. I am in awe of Aiden James.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Ghost Story
Visiting the Smokie Mountains, Miriam and David Hobbs find a strange souvenir: a little bag labeled "Allie Mae's Treasures" containing various things including a broken tooth.David brings the bag with him home to Colorado, where unexplained sounds, chills and moving objects begin to plague the family. David has nightmares of Allie Mae as the violence escalates, so he takes the bag back to Tennessee in the hopes of placating the spirit.

I found the atmosphere of the story very creepy. As the ghost starts with annoyances then moves to violence you become really fearful for the characters. You really grow to like the Hobbs family and want the ghost to leave them alone!I like that we get actual explanations as to what is going on with the paranormal things and am quite pleased with the ending.A fun book, especially for Halloween! ... Editorial Review

Product Description
In Restless Giant, acclaimed historical author James Patterson provides a crisp, concise assessment of the twenty-seven years between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush in a sweeping narrative that seamlessly weaves together social, cultural, political, economic, and international developments. We meet the era's many memorable figures and explore the "culture wars" between liberals and conservatives that appeared to split the country in two.
Patterson describes how America began facing bewildering developments in places such as Panama, Somalia, Bosnia, and Iraq, and discovered that it was far from easy to direct the outcome of global events, and at times even harder for political parties to reach a consensus over what attempts should be made. At the same time, domestic issues such as the persistence of racial tensions, high divorce rates, alarm over crime, and urban decay led many in the media to portray the era as one of decline. Patterson offers a more positive perspective, arguing that, despite our often unmet expectations, we were in many ways better off than we thought. By 2000, most Americans lived more comfortably than they had in the 1970s, and though bigotry and discrimination were far from extinct, a powerful rights consciousness insured that these were less pervasive in American life than at any time in the past.
With insightful analyses and engaging prose, Restless Giant captures this period of American history in a way that no other book has, illuminating the road that the United States traveled from the dismal days of the mid-1970s through the hotly contested election of 2000.

The Oxford History of the United States
The Oxford History of the United States is the most respected multi-volume history of our nation. The series includes three Pulitzer Prize winners, a New York Times bestseller, and winners of the Bancroft and Parkman Prizes. The Atlantic Monthly has praised it as "the most distinguished series in American historical scholarship," a series that "synthesizes a generation's worth of historical inquiry and knowledge into one literally state-of-the-art book." Conceived under the general editorship of C. Vann Woodward and Richard Hofstadter, and now under the editorship of David M. Kennedy, this renowned series blends social, political, economic, cultural, diplomatic, and military history into coherent and vividly written narrative. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NO Dust Jacket
The value was diminished by the fact the book had no dust jacket. This was not clearly marked on the listing for the book.Otherwise, satisfied as a good reference for this time period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and interesting account of recent times
In this latest volume of the Oxford series of US history, this book does a good job of summarizing the major events in the last 30 years. It could have been much more complete and it's one of the smallest volumes of the series. That's too bad since there obviously could have been much more to write about. I have enjoyed this series tremendously and this book doesn't disappoint. For a very quick reminder of the Ford administration to the beginning of George W. Bush's time, you can't go wrong reading this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Sociology than History
This series is generally excellent, but Patterson's effort here drifts off into more sociology than history. He predictably dislikes Nixon like 99.5% of academics. This volume was something of a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Hit and a Miss
The Oxford History of the United States series is an amazing endeavor. The purpose of this undertaking is to provide readers with an accessible summary of major historical works in the field in engaging narratives. Two books in the series have won the Pulitzer Prize; others have won a number of important, but lesser-known book awards.Patterson, a professor emeritus at Brown University, is the only individual to write two volumes in this series. This book picks up right where Grand Expectations, his previous contribution to the series, left off.He basically advances the same argument about rights consciousness, but for a different time period.

His text is stunning. He shows his skill in interpretingvast amounts of information and putting old controversies into new lights. The 1970s were hardly as bad as people thought and the 1980s were a time of greatness as Ronald Regan dominated the decade in a way that few presidents do.

The account, however, breaks down when Patterson reaches 1990.The chapters in the secondhalf of the book are quite uneven. Some are as brilliant and informative as the material on the 1970s.In other chapters, Patterson fails to support his thesis. His citations are often missing and fail to support his arguments. At times, Patterson comes across as little more than a journalist reporting on the news of the day.

To use a baseball term, this book is a hit and a miss. A .500 batting average is pretty good in baseball; in history it gets a four-star rating, but just barely.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy to read and informative history book
Patterson successfully presents modern history in this book in a very concise and easy to read book. It's objective for the most part, and covers the most relevent events of each decade mentioned. There is not a whole lot of detail on everything however, it is more of a summary, but it will "wet your appetite" on various topics for more detailed study. It's a pretty good history book. ...
