4-0 out of 5 stars Really humourous book
Nightmare Abbey is absolutely wonderful for the most part. Love Peacock has a very witty and slightly subversive take on the concept of Romanticism. His attacks on the melancholy aspects of the period areespecially amusing, the owner of Nightmare Abbey who only employs servantswith depressing looks, and even more depressing names is brilliantlywritten. The only downside to the novel is the dialogue which I found quitedifficult in comparison to the main narrative, but it was definately worththe effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most humorous books ever
This is easily one of the funniest books I have ever read. Two separate novels from one of the premier wits and classical scholars of the last century, both dealing with contemporary figures, mildly disguised, andcontemporary issues.

If you find Gothic novels far too over the top, ordelight in parody of the likes of Byron, Coleridge, and Shelley, you'lllove this book, which includes touching descriptions of British landscapealong with its heavy dose of good-natured mockery.

The introduction andfootnotes are gems as well.If only the complete run of Peacock novelswere in print in this fashion.

A must for anyone interested inRomanticism, British history, and good fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat expectable plot but unexpected result
At the beginning and large part of this book, this story seems to be dull, however the last three chapters changed this dull line and becomes interesting.

Anyway, this is a short story, which will not take much time to read, and might be worthy reading for modern readers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Read
This version of Robin Hood goes along pretty well with most of the traditional Robin Hood stories. One difference is that Robin, the Earl of Locksley and Huntington, actually squandered away his fortune and poached the King's deer for love of the hunt rather than out of necessity. His lands were then confiscated by King Henry and he was named outlaw for resisting arrest.
For those who like strong women characters, this Maid Marian (who's real name is Matilda) can use a sword, quarter-staff, and shoot a bow as well as Robin. She also loves to hunt and likes being out in Nature.
The only complaint I have is that some of the characters, Friar Tuck for instance, tend to be rather long winded.Other than that I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in Robin Hood. ... Read more

Product Description
1910. English poet and satirist, friend and biographer of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Peacock is best remembered as one of the great satirists of the Romantic period. Early in his writing career he made use of the Arthurian legends, mainly for satire, amusement, and instruction. This volume contains letters that Peacock wrote either to intellectual bookseller Thomas Hookham who introduced him to Shelley, or to Shelley himself. ... Read more
