4-0 out of 5 stars The goblins will get you, if you don't look out!
My family has always loved the poems Of James Whitcomb Riley, so that is the author I had chosen. The book I'd picked is Joyful poems for Children. It was copy righted in 1892-1946, but only became available with illustrations in 1946.
Most of the poems in this book remind me of the seasons. The descriptions of the children, flowers, snow and the animals give you very vivid pictures in your mind. The author had a very good way of allowing your imagination to see the image he was projecting. He uses his words in much the same way that my grandpa did. It's really nice to hear it that way because that brings up memories for my mother and that makes her really happy.
I have a special fondness for Little Orphan Annie, which was also a favorite of my mothers. She used to chase us around the house saying "The goblins will get you if you don't watch out!" Then she'd rock us in her chair and read to us from this book.

There were ninety-one poems in this book. They were all great poems which made it difficult to pick so few to talk about specifically. I would like to mention the poems that I love most. They are: Little orphan Annie, Baby Hood, The man in the moon, Little Girl-Two-Little-Girl and When the frost is on the pumpkin.
I like Little OrphanAnnie and When the frost is on the pumpkin, because of the memories they bring up. I also Like the Man in the Moon and Babyhood and Little-Girl-Two-Little-Girls, because I can read these poems to my daughter. Just like my mother read them to me.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry. It's one of my family's favorites and it may be yours too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touched by Armazindy
James Whitcomb Riley is a very renowned poet from Indiana. Many individuals have encountered his writings at one point or another. Riley is a poet who is very successful at getting his readers attention and leaving them not wanting to put the book down.I find that many of James Whitcomb Riley's writings contain a lighthearted sort of innocence, and most all of them contain some sense of cheerful humor. There are still the pieces that have a more dreadful side, although I came across only a few in the book.Even though dreadful, the poem would still impact you in one way.So many of the poems in Armanzindy leave you simply wondering.Wondering what happened after the poem ended, wondering what the characters looked like, or how they were exactly doing something. The poems in this book contain imaginative descriptions that leave you wanting more.I was not ready for some of the poems to be finished, and that kept them in my mind. Armazindy relays stories of growing up, poems that bring all your senses to life, pieces that leave you guessing, small bits of comedy, and others can tell you of many hardships faced throughout some lives. James Whitcomb Riley is a writer that does not boggle you down with perplexing words. Riley tends to quaintly use some Hoosier dialect in many poems. This would be the usage of slang, or country talk.Being from Indiana, James Whitcomb Riley tends to relay an up close understanding of life in the rural Midwest.Few poetry collections have caught my eye, given me that emotional feeling, and kept me reading as Armazindy has. ... Product Description
James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916) was an American poet, born in Greenfield, Indiana. At the age of 16 he left school and joined a group of itinerant sign painters. Subsequently he acted in a patent-medicine show and worked for a newspaper. From 1877 to 1885 he was a regular contributor of verse to the Indianapolis Journal under the pen name of Benj. F. Johnson, of Boone. Some of the poems were collected in The Old Swimmin' Hole and 'Leven More Poems (1883), a volume that achieved great popularity. His best-known poems include "Little Orphant Annie," "The Raggedy Man," and "When the Frost Is on the Punkin." Riley's popularity derived mainly from his quaint use of Hoosier dialect, his cheerful and whimsical sense of humor, and his intimate understanding of life in the rural Midwest. His other works include "Rhymes of Childhood" (1890) and "Poems Here at Home" (1893). ... Read more
