3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings...
Two of these stories I don't feel belong at all: Westerfeld's and Stolarz's additions. In Westerfeld's, I just don't see where love comes in at all! Even calling it a crush seems like pushing it. The only real hint of romance between the two is them being called "lovebirds" by their teacher and them holding hands. Stolarz's has some romance, I suppose, but it is very fleeting and does not seem to be the main focus of the story. That's not to say that both of the aforementioned authors did not have good stories, but I just didn't understand why they were in this anthology. Otherwise though, this is a fair collection of stories; some were far better than others (Marr's for example), but for being short stories the rest weren't terrible. I don't think this book was for me though and probably will not continue with the "____ is Hell" collections. I had high expectations for this book, having read most of the authors' other works, and I was disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to sample YA paranormal authors, 3.5 stars
LOVE IS HELL is a neat little anthology composed of five paranormal romances from five popular young adult authors: Melissa Marr, Scott Westerfield, Justine Larbalestier, Gabrielle Zevin, and Laurie Faria Stolarz. The stories include a tension-filled romance about a ghost with unfinished business, a futuristic perfect world where hormones and sleep are turned off, and a seal faery's struggle with the two tugs on his heart, the sea and his mortal love.(Plus two more tales.)

Reading this anthology was a great way to sample each author's work, and I enjoyed four of the five stories. Each tale had a distinct beginning, middle and end, even though they were short.I was most impressed with Marr's "Love Struck" and Larbalestier's "Thinner Than Water."Both of these stories featured faeries and strong female protagonists.I could have easily enjoyed a novel-length story about each setting and the characters that were created.

Westerfield's futuristic tale about a world where sleep isn't needed and the ups and downs of teenage hormones are suppressed was interesting with likeable characters. With a short story, though, there wasn't as much time as I would have liked to become comfortable with the brave new world he created for his characters. Stolarz's tale about a romance between girl and ghost was nice but predictable.Zevin's tale about the blur between fantasy and reality was the one story that I did not enjoy. The author tried to make what seemed like an obvious point about the potentially dangerous blur between the two, but I didn't feel that the story was well-executed.

Overall, this book was a great way to check out new authors and a nice way to finish each evening with a complete story each night before bed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Twist and Turns!
My boyfriend and I used to have insomnia like really bad so we would go to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night. I always went to the book section, every time; and every time this book would jump out at me but I would never get it. It wasn't until I went to Melissa Marr's book signing in May that I ended up getting it. This book has some of the best short stories ever.

Like the first one, "Sleeping with the spirit", was about this girl and her family and how they moved into this house and she kept having these dreams about this boy. He would kind of hurt her (in the dream) and it felt so vividly, but when she got up early in the morning she realized that the marks were real. He just wanted her to listen. This short story had me wanting to know more after the ending! It was so good. I have actually never read anything by Laurie Faria Stolarz but now I'm very curious to see what her other novels hold.

The second one was, "Stupid Perfect World", this one is by Scott Westerfeld. I personally did not like the specials series and I was very specitical about reading this short story but in the end I actually really loved it. It was just amazing what he did about the future and this "Perfect World". I think it had to be my second favorite out of all the short stories!

"Thinner than water" by Justine Larbalestier was the third story and this one was very unique. I don't really want to elaborate because I'm afraid I'm going to give it away, but let me say it was so good.

This is my favorite story out of all them! It's called "Fan Fiction" by Gabrielle Zevin. No joke, when I got to the ending I was so freaked out that it was just insane! It was written so, I don't even know how to explain it! It's very good!

Last but not least, "Love Struck" by Melissa Marr. This was a very enjoyable one. It of coarse had to do with fey and she just surprised me by how she decided to end it. Love triangles are so interesting to read!

Anyway, this book is pretty awesome. The stories are unique, with amazing and unforgettable characters. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 paws.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read
Love is Hell is comprised of five short stories by five different authors. About what you ask? Well love of course! Well actually that's what I originally requested it for......because you know I was going through the I need a romance story phase. But I captured me the most in most of these stories were the new worlds they portrayed. I traveled from one world to the next wondering where they would lead their heroes and heroines. Wondering what discoveries they would show, what phenomena would occur?. I was basically glued to each story.

Jumping from world to the next all the while thinking how so different they were. They all however had two things in common. One they were all creative in their own way and two they had a love story in one form or another.

I enjoyed Laurie Faria Stolarz's "Sleeping with the Spirit" which starts the book off. From the title it wasn't very difficult to guess where the story would lead. From that I traveled through Scott Westerfeld's "Stupid Perfect world" which left the biggest impression of me. His vission of what the future could hold was fantastic, creative does not begin to describe it (I hope he writes a full story on that world). From there I traveled to Justin Larbalestier's "Thinner than water" it was like going from futuristic to very ancient and primal time which was a great contrast. "Fan Fictions" by Gabrielle Zevin" Then took me back to present time, I am however unsure of how I felt about the story. I will say this I misjudged what it was and ended up with shock for an ending. The book finally finished off with Melissa Marr's "Love Struck" another wonderful fantasy one that I actually wished a full book by itself.

Ofcourse like with every short story it seemed like there wasn't enough time to develope the characters but that didn't take away from the creativity. I would give this book four out of five stars. If you're someone who likes fiction with a dash of a romantic aspect and don't want to spend too much on a book this is a pretty good choice.

To put it simply, Gabrielle Zevin in "Fan Fictions" says that reading a really good book makes you want to read slower to savor it I would have to disagree because I thought this was a good book so I wanted to know what happens. I could not put it down except for the occasional break after each story.

2-0 out of 5 stars Love is Hell
Only one of the short stories was worth reading! This book was not worth my time or money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!
I have to admit up front: I am no lover of language poetry. To me it comes off as pretentious and gimmicky and deliberately obscure. So I can't imagine picking up Wilkerson's Threading Stone on my own. That said, when a friend gave me a copy of of this collection as a birthday gift, I couldn't put it down.

Wilkerson's book feels big in scope like Walcott's Omeros or Eliot's The Wasteland. I don't make these comparisons lightly. To be sure, Wilkerson isn't Derek Walcott or TS Eliot (yet). But unlike so many first books of poetry I read today, Wilkerson has a project. He has ambition. The poems add up to SOMETHING. The diction can sometimes be problematic or difficult, but I never felt alienated. Just when he is about to lose me, the poet drops a breadcrumb for me to follow.

Part of what makes Threading Stone works is that unutterable quality of important literature. It's not so much the form or diction or content, etc. etc. Instead it's the sense the reader gets of poetic scope and resonance in the work. I get this with Wilkerson, and I look forward to his next volume of poems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Threading Stone: A Sprawling, Ambitious Book
In Threading Stone, Scott Wilkerson's poem, "Rural Routes," begins this way:

You said you wish I were more communicative,
so I am telling you now that I have
complicated feelings about kudzu.
Observe its vines seducing our telephone wires,
Its filaments tickling through my conspiracy of
Whispered conceits.
I could say I am growing eager just to test the spatial
Properties of my deceptions

Give the playful nature of Wilkerson's very postmodern tendencies it is not a stretch to read this stanza, if you'll forgive me, meta-poetically.

The poet's complicated feelings about kudzu, and how they tickle through his conspiracy of whispered conceits, articulate well the speaker's stance toward both his poetics and his subject. He is more suspicious (perhaps more paranoid than any reader) about the limits of artifice, specifically the artifice he has created. Several times through the book, the poet calls our attention to his own paranoia just so we all understand the limitations of representation. The last lines of the book's first poem, "Research and Development" put it this way: "It is a failed program and a failed poem,/which, for now, we will keep to ourselves."

But this is what I admire most about Threading Stone: it is a sprawling, ambitious work that carves out new poetic space. "I am in the business just now of thinking/ about the ontology of hidden objects," the poet writes in the eighth section of "Labyrinth Studies." These hidden objects range from the traditional--the Minotaur--to the pop cultural--Popey--and take us from Los Angeles to Alabama. These hidden objects, sometimes buried in complicated diction and syntax, bring us pleasure when we unearth them.

And the diction. Oh my. The poet's diction is risky. As with many so-called "language poems," written in a diction-trumps-all poetic discourse, the poems in Threading Stone risk alienating the reader. Instead of alienating his readers, however, the poet puts his arm around them and gently pulls them through the poems. And instead of cynicism the poems radiate hope and beauty, they give the reader the feeling that art really does matter, and they remind us that art might really save us in the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for twenty-somethings
I just read one the of the reviews by a 38 year *old* man and he's way off the mark. I've been following Dating Insider for two years and this book is definitely for someone more of my age group, I'm 26. This book has a lot of style and worded in the language of Generation X, much like Maxim magazine -- this isn't a book for clueless baby boomers who can't follow the lingo. The tips and strategies in this book don't work unless you're a person who knows a little bit about women and knows how to look good to begin with. No, if you have a bald head and a pot belly, this book probably won't help you much, except to tell you to lose your pot belly and do something about your receding hairline. That's just to start. The things that Dating Insider teaches are probably out of reach to most people -- but give it a shot! If you want to stop dating 4's and 5's and start dating 8's and 9's, you need to read this book. In the end I'd just say that this book (at least for me) has given me a serious boost and shown exactly how to make it to the top of the cliche 'cool crowd'.If you're 30 or younger this book is golden, something baby boomers would love to throw in a burn pile.Dating Insider is the real life answer to the movie "How to be a Player" with Bill Bellamy. Rent the movie and you'll see where you could be if you understood the game of playing women.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype
I have read a bunch of books on this subject. This one is ok, but relative to the competition, (...)If you subscribe to the free online newsletter called "Dating Insider" or "Seduction Insider" or whatever it's called, you will see a LOT of overlap in this book.Probably enough to make you return it, which is exactly what I plan to do with mine.

The editing is horrendous. On page 283, one sentence just trails off, MID-PARAGRAPH, and isn't ever completed. And that's not the only one.For crying out loud, that's the kind of thing you got yelled at for in 2nd or 3rd grade. (...), it seems like they could have edited the thing.

Next, the book doesn't flow from chapter to chapter.Instead, it seems to be a bunch of archived articles by different authors,
slapped together from the Dating Insider website [which you can read online for FREE], bound into a single volume with a cover glued to it.
So, 2 stars if you've read anything at all on the subject or are familiar with the website.Possibly 3 stars if you've read absolutely nothing on this subject from any source, and are fond of overpaying for poor quality.Overall, I say pass on this one.
