I am not a lover of the historical fiction genre and I am not reading this series. That said, my wife and mother-in-law LOVE this series and keep gobbling up each new title as they go!It is my present to them.I'll stop buying soon as the titles get very expensive toward the end of the series.Maybe it's a book buying conspiracy...

Product Description

Seneca, Lucius Annaeus, born at Corduba (Cordova) ca. 4 BCE, of a prominent and wealthy family, spent an ailing childhood and youth at Rome in an aunt's care. He became famous in rhetoric, philosophy, money-making, and imperial service. After some disgrace during Claudius' reign he became tutor and then, in 54 CE, advising minister to Nero, some of whose worst misdeeds he did not prevent. Involved (innocently?) in a conspiracy, he killed himself by order in 65. Wealthy, he preached indifference to wealth; evader of pain and death, he preached scorn of both; and there were other contrasts between practice and principle.

We have Seneca's philosophical or moral essays (ten of them traditionally called Dialogues)—on providence, steadfastness, the happy life, anger, leisure, tranquility, the brevity of life, gift-giving, forgiveness—and treatises on natural phenomena. Also extant are 124 epistles, in which he writes in a relaxed style about moral and ethical questions, relating them to personal experiences; a skit on the official deification of Claudius, Apocolocyntosis (in Loeb number 15); and nine rhetorical tragedies on ancient Greek themes. Many epistles and all his speeches are lost.

The 124 epistles are collected in Volumes IV–VI of the Loeb Classical Library's ten-volume edition of Seneca.

The treatises on natural phenomena, Naturales Quaestiones, are collected in Volumes VII and X of the Loeb Classical Library's ten-volume edition of Seneca.

Product Description
Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus is the most famous of ancient tragedies and a literary masterpiece. It is not, however, the only classical dramatization of Oedipus' quest to discover his identity. Between four and five hundred years after Sophocles' play was first performed, Seneca composed a fine, but neglected and often disparaged Latin tragedy on the same subject, which, in some ways, comes closer to our common understanding of the Oedipus myth. Now, modern readers can compare the two versions, in new translations by Frederick Ahl. Balancing poetry and clarity, yet staying scrupulously close to the original texts, Ahl's English versions are designed to be both read and performed, and are alert to the literary and historical complexities of each.

In approaching Sophocles anew, Ahl is careful to preserve the richly allusive nature and rhetorical power of the Greek, including the intricate use of language that gives the original its brilliant force. For Ahl, Seneca's tragedy is vastly and intriguingly different from that of Sophocles, and a poetic masterpiece in its own right. Seneca takes us inside the mind of Oedipus in ways that Sophocles does not, making his inner conflicts a major part of the drama itself in his soliloquies and asides.

Two Faces of Oedipus opens with a wide-ranging introduction that examines the conflicting traditions of Oedipus in Greek literature, the different theatrical worlds of Sophocles and Seneca, and how cultural and political differences between Athenian democracy and Roman imperial rule affect the nature and conditions under which the two tragedies were composed. This book brings two dramatic traditions into conversation while providing elegant, accurate, and exciting new versions of Sophocles' and Seneca's tragedies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you appreciate OEDIPUS you MUST read Frederick Ahl
The information in Ahl's introductions to both Sophocles and Seneca's OEDIPUS is essential to anyone reading either work.(I would further recommend Ted Hughes' adaptation of Seneca's OEDIPUS, as well as Diskin Clay's version of Sophocles's OEDIPUS.) The details of Ahl's information, including notes on word origins, are illuminating. The contrasts between the Greek and Roman plays are fascinating and important.Ahls is quite accessible! This book was a revelation to me, and draws attention to questionable aspects of previous interpretations.Even so, I urge readers not to rest content with this as in any way final or ultimately correct.

By combining archaeological data grounded in the material culture of the Seneca Townley-Read site with historical documents, Jordan answers larger questions about the Seneca's cultural sustainability and durability in an era of intense colonial pressures. He offers a detailed reconstruction of daily life in the Seneca community and demonstrates that they were extremely selective about which aspects of European material culture, plant and animal species, and lifeways they allowed into their territory.

Of mixed Iroquois, Seneca, and Anglican descent, Parker was also a controversial figure - recognized as an advocate for Indians but criticized for his assimilationist stance. In this exhaustively researched biography - the first book-length examination of Parker's life and career - Joy Porter explores complex issues of Indian identity that are as relevant today as in Parker's time. ... Product Description
For four years in the early 1900s, the Fairmount Park Motor Races were run on an eight-mile course in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park. They drew half a million spectators the first year but surprisingly have largely been overlooked as part of automobile racing history. There were never any serious injuries and not a single death but after four years the event was banned, with safety concerns cited. Both the on-track action and the off-track events that affected the races are described as are the successful crusade to stop the races and the attempts to revive it in the years following. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Racing History
This is an informative, interesting, often exciting history of a little known series of automobile races. Seneca provides a thought-provoking analysis of the local politics behind the decisions of the Philadelphia elite regarding the holding of automobile races in Fairmount Park in the period 1908 to 1911. Although the races were safe and extremely popular, several members of the city's elite believed they were an inappropriate form of entertainment, and after 1911, the races were never held again. However, the four annual races brought together some of the leading race-drivers of the era, and a surprisingly wide variety of car models. Seneca gives a minute-by minute (and sometimes second-by-second) account of the races, to the point that you can almost hear the tires screech and the crowd shout, and smell the tires burning and the clouds of pungent gasoline exhaust! The book is a really interesting treatment and should appeal to auto enthusiasts, those interested in Philadelphia history, and to a broader audience of readers who would like to know more about popular culture in the early 20th century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
In this series of letters to a friend, Seneca discusses his philosophy of life, which seems quite realistic and uplifting to me (your mileage may vary). He often quotes Epicurus, sometimes to agree with him, sometimes to disparage him.In addition to the philosophy there are also many glimpses of everyday life and occasional bits of wry humor. The English translation flows well and reveals the depth and wit of the original text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Secular Bible for the 21st Century
Seneca's one hundred and twenty four letters to Lucilius constitute a secular bible, an ethical catechism written in a gnomic and epigrammatic style that sparkles as it enlightens. So impressed were the early church fathers with Seneca's moral insights that they advanced (fabricated?) the speculation that he must have come within the influence of Christian teachings. T.S. Eliot sneers at Seneca's boyish, commonplace wisdom and points out that the resemblances between Seneca's 'stoic philosophy' and Christianity are superficial. For those seeking a practical, modern manual on how to do good and how to do well, written in the 'silver point' style that values brevity, concision and memorable expression, Seneca's letters are indeed the Good Book. ... Product Description
A feature of Roman rhetorical education under the early empire was the dominance of the declamatio - the declamation on a mythological, historical or quasi-legal theme designed in the first place to train students for the law courts and political debating but indulged in for its own sake by amateurs as well as students and teachers of rhetoric. The elder Seneca, father of the philosopher and dramatist, compiled an anthology of the often bizarre utterances of the declaimers. Janet Fairweather's book is a detailed study of the anthologist's literary criticism. From Seneca's prefactory descriptions of declaimers and passing remarks on their work, she derives evidence for all the stages in the preparation and delivery of declamations; and from the same source, in conjunction with select declamatory extracts, she shows that rhetorical taste in Seneca's time was not so uniform as is commonly supposed. ...
