To state the obvious, an English-language classic.
How does one, in 2009, write a real review of the collected major works of Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson?Lord Tennyson, the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in the high Victorian era, was probably the defining English-language poet of his era (Robert Browning being probably his only real rival, and none of Browning's writings are as widely-known today as "The Lady of Shalott" or "Ulysses").Moreover, he is one of the most proficient technicians of English language poetry in any era, matched only by a handful of others (Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, John Milton, John Keats, the aforementioned Browning).Anything less than five stars would be tantamount to heresy.

The book collects the contents in chronological order, either grouped under publication headings (such as the 1832 and 1842 volumes identically titled "Poems") or time periods ("Poems from the 1870s and 1880s").Included in its entirety is his lengthy opus "In Memorium A.H.H.", his salute to his deceased would-be-brother-in-law Arthur Hallam (whose surname would later be repurposed as the first name of Tennyson's own son).It should be noted that Tennyson's longest poetical work, "The Idylls of the King", is not included here in its entirety, presumably because it's long enough to support its own separate publication, and this is a fairly big volume as it is.Two sections, 'Merlin and Vivien' and 'The Holy Grail', are included as samples.Other especially large works included in their entirety are "Maud" and "The Princess".As well, the book includes a selection of Tennyson's personal correspondence relating to his work (such as a letter to Princess Alice explaining the dedication of a new edition of "The Idylls of the King" to her deceased father Albert, the Prince-consort).

Alfred Lord Tennyson
This CD has helped me understand Tennyson's work and to develop lesson plans around it.Tennyson isn't easy for me to read so it was good to have something to read it with.

A great series for children or intro to poetry
My mom gave me two of the books in this series (Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost) when I was little, and I love them. The illustrations are beautiful and there are explanatory notes for some words that may not be as familiar to children or modern readers. I recommend any of the books in the series.

Utter Awefulness in a CD
I'd like to preface my review with 2 facts it would be prudent to remember while reading this review:
1. I am by no means a poetry expert or professional. At best I'm a poetry enthusiast.
2. I have not written an amazon review in 5 years and I buy 50~ items from amazon each year.

This CD is a complete and utter atrocity.
It is vicious death to the works of an exquisite poet who in my opinion - deserves better.

My fascination with Tennyson is a pretty straightforward one.
Tennyson muses on concepts like honour, truth and duty.
Being an ex-soldier myself I find it easy to relate to those concepts.
And Tennyson's writes so superbly one must be stupefied when first reading his works.

I've been eagerly expecting a collected audio CD of Tennyson's works for years now.
When I got this CD I was excited as a 6 year old would be on Christmas/Hanuka/whatever morning.

However, this CD butchers Tennyson's works so cruelly I cannot remain silent.
It is by far the worst reading of Tennyson's works I've ever heard.
I gargle things when I brush my teeth that sound better than this.

Reading poetry is more than just about having a good projective voice and a British accent.
It's about providing the listener with an experience, an understanding of the text, of a shared voyage.

Tennyson's poems are being read like one would read a restaurant menu.
The pronunciation is abysmal, the pace of reading is atrocious and I just can't relate to it on a personal level.

Honestly, I've listened to every online reading of Tennyson's works.
All of those free youtube videos far surpass this audio book.

My recommandation to you is to avoid buying this CD.
And if you do buy this CD - make sure to burn it once you're done. Otherwise you'll be tempted for a replay and than the true horribleness of this CD really sinks in.

I've never imagined anyone could actually demolish "The Charge of the Light Brigade" or "Ulysses" like this CD has.

A GEM OF A BOOK...HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE
I cannot think of a better way to introduce the poetry of Lord Tennyson than this small volume.The selection is excellent and of interest you the young reader.The commentary is quite relevant as are the pictures which accompany it.I find that often now, our young people go all the way through the early grades in school and many of them have never heard of Alford, Lord Tennyson,much less read their poetry.This was the sort of stuff my generation and the generation before it grew up on and cut our teeth on.I do not feel I am any worse for the wear.I am fearful that we are bringing up an entire generation (rightfully or wrong, although I feel it is the later) of young folks who will have no appreciation to this great art form and will miss a lot.This book helps.This entire series helps, as a matter of fact and I certainly recommend you add this one and the others to your library.Actually, it is rather fun reading these with the young folk and then talking about them.Not only do you get to enjoy the work your self and perhaps bring back some great memories, but you have the opportunity to interact with your child or student.It is actually rather surprising what some of the kids come up with.I read these to my grandchildren and to the kids in my classes at school.For the most part, when I really get to discussing the work with them, they enjoy it.Recommend this one highly. ... Great Collection, Good Value
Alfred, Lord Tennyson is one of the most famous, revered, and widely read of all poets, achieving a popularity in his day that is now absolutely unthinkable. He continues to be one of the most anthologized poets, and many of his lines have become so famous that they are routinely used by people who have never even heard of him. Indeed, he is probably the most quoted English writer besides Shakespeare, and many of his works have become immortal masterpieces. He is one of very few Victorian poets to have survived Modernism almost unscathed; writers like T. S. Eliot of course did away with his formalism, but even they could not deny his dazzling technical wizardry. Only Alexander Pope among English poets even rivals his mastery of form; his handling of meter, rhyme, and other poetic technicalities is so deft as to be near-scientific. Yet he also produced verse that vividly mimicked actual speech and, far more importantly, avoided the dryness one might expect from such a consummate craftsman. Equally adept at lyrics and narratives, he wrote some of the most beautiful and moving poems in the former category and some of the most engaging in the latter. Simply put, anyone even remotely interested in poetry must be familiar with Tennyson.

Tennyson lived a long life that spanned most of the nineteenth century and remained productive in old age, though the quality of his verse significantly declined as he steadily became more didactic and conservative. A Selected Poems is thus ideal for most, as only the truly dedicated will want a complete edition. This outstanding collection is perfect for those wanting an introduction and will be the only Tennyson most readers will need other than his epic Idylls of the King. It has thirty-seven poems over more than 250 pages, including the long poems In Memoriam and Maud and nearly all the notable short works, while Idylls is represented by "Morte d'Arthur," the short poem from which it germinated. This gives an excellent representation of Tennyson's work, stretching from early poems to some of his last. It will lead many to read more Tennyson, which is not the least of its virtues, but its comprehensiveness is really quite remarkable, especially in including the two longer works, which are rarely given in full beside shorter ones.

Those wanting a more comprehensive edition must of course look elsewhere, and those requiring significant supplemental material must also. This has only a short introduction and lacks notes or line numbers. However, one of Tennyson's great virtues is accessibility; one need not be widely read or have a great vocabulary to appreciate him. Supplemental material is thus far less necessary than with most poets. This book's binding and packaging are also high quality, especially considering the price. This or a more deluxe edition certainly belongs on every poetry lover's bookshelf.

The man was genius, and this collection of his work is one of the best I have seen yet. AMAZING!

By the way, this Penguin book has the COMPLETE text of "In Memoriam."The Everyman's edition does not.

'Tho much is taken, much abides'Ulysses above all
This is a rich collection of the work of Tennyson, and those who care for his verse will derive great pleasure from it. For myself most of Tennyson's longer poems have been more skimmed and tasted by me than really chewed and digested. Tennyson lives as a poet to me primarily through one poem, 'Ulysses'. This poem to my mind perfectly embodies a certain heroic stance toward life. It does this inimmortal lines. The poem tells the story of the great Ulysses returning home after having voyaged and become ' a part of all I have met' . He is now not the youth who set out in the beginning but an elderly veteran. He begins with , 'Though much is taken much abides' And so in mid-life or in late- life having come home he is not content to rest. But is an ' old man explorer' who sets out again to meet and make his destiny. ' Though much is taken much abides, and though we are not that strength, which in old days, moved earth and heaven, that which we are we are, one equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak by time and fate, but strong in will, to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.'
This kind of determination not only spoke to the Victorian world, and to Tennyson's own life- situation with its great losses and difficulties, but I believe will speak to mankind for so long as we are human.

The great British poet laureate of the Victorian age
This little book is a good and inexpensive introduction to Tennyson, who was every Victorian lady's favorite. From a purely technical level, he was absolutely ingenious, perhaps the best poet of Victorian times. His poems were also easy to remember and recite aloud. For example, "The Lady of Shalott." Give this poem a try and you'll see what I mean.

Too much commentary
The readers for this recording performed satisfactorily. Derek Jacobi was particularly fine. However, there was too much narration between the poems. The commentator should have commenced-and ended-before the poems started. We paid to hear Lord Tennyson, not old controversy about him.

A wonderful gift
While not an avid reader of Tennyson myself, I bought this book for my brother's birthday. I was very impressed. The selection of peices was large and the book printed on high quality paper, with no cramped spaces. The work was presented in a setting very attractive to a poetry reader and was small enough to slip in anywhere. If you want to know about the poetry you will have to read it for yourself, but it was wonderfully presented in this volume. ... Read more

Missing poems
I love Tennyson and was hoping for a more comprehensive collection that I am used to in Mobile Reference titles.Certainly you get a lot for your money in this collection, but it is missing some of my favorites including "Vastness" and "Merlin and the Gleam" as well as numerous others.

Editorial qualms
As editor of this collection, Robert W. Hill has, I feel, made some rather poor choices. For instance, in the Preface he audaciously writes that he removed "indisputably 'bad'" poems. In this capacity, he omitted "Godiva" -- a great loss -- as well as many charming short verses, well represented in other collections.

Additionally, although he claims deliberately not to have modernized Tennyson's spelling, he nevertheless Americanizes both spelling and punctuation (e.g. "honor" instead of "honour"; consistent placement of the full stop within quotation marks; and so on). This badly affects the very Englishness of Tennyson's voice, I should think.

I would recommend the edition for its highly informed annotations, but not as a source for the poems themselves.

Nice collection of Tennyson's works
Tennyson was a poet of the Victorian age who wrote very sensitively and beautifully about the pains and shortness of life, the growing problems of belief in conventional religion, and about personal grief and loss.His most important poem, In Memorium, focuses centrally on these themes, and is included in this edition with good explanatory notes.

As with any selection this doesn't include all of Tennyson's works (which fill a number of volumes) but is fairly representative and also contains good critical essays from Tennyson scholars at the back.And it is readily affordable in price, making it easily available to the lover of poetry and the student or scholar alike.

Sloppy editing
Do not buy this book.I adopted it as a text book for a course I am teaching but have found typos in just about every poem I have read in it.Some you can figure out:

"How sweet--while warn airs lull us,blowling lowly"

"Warn" is supposed to be "warm." But others are really confusing:

"Thro' many a womenacanthus-wreath divine!"

"Women" is supposed to be"woven."I checked these in the first edition of the NortonCritical--the first edition has the correct lines.I guess Norton justscanned the first edition and put it on the shelves as a second"edition" without even editing it.

Very sloppy work--pleasedon't buy the book.The texts are well selected--it is nice to have ThePrincess available.And the critical readings are also well chosen.Butthe texts are hardly readible. ... Read more

Oh that I had read the comments from others before I made this purchase.This book is a horrendous photocopy of an illegible 19th century copy of Tennyson's Works. Less than half of the volume's pages can be read. It is completely worthless and should not be foisted upon the consuming public.

Unacceptable
This particular book was a very poor facsimile of the actual Complete Works of Alfred Tennyson.The quality was so poor, in fact, that the words were completely illegible on most pages.This book was a waste of paper and ink.

Ridiculous.
I agree with the other reviewer, and wish I had read that before purchasing this poor excuse for a book!I'd give it zero stars if there was an option.Every second page is, as mentioned, utterly illegible.The disclaimer in the book is laughable in light of the actual state of the facsimile.This book should be titled "Roughly Half of the Complete Works of Alfred Tennyson" and Amazon should be ashamed to sell it!

NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!
This book is *not* the complete works of Alfred Tennyson! It is a very poor reproduction of an old book, page for page, except that half of the pages are too dark to be even remotely legible. It is literally a page-by-page scan of an old document. The publisher says on the inside of the book: "This important reprint was made from an old and scarce book. Therefore, it may have deefects such as missing pages, erroneous pagination, blurred pages, missing text, poor pictures, markings, marginalia and other issues beyond our control..." this is putting it mildly. The scans are quite literally unreadable. I find that there is no reason whatsoever to purchase this book and am very disappointed that Amazon posted no description so I was unaware of what I was actually buying. ... Read more

Great
I am a Lit. buff and this is a well compiled book of all his greats I am quite happy with it.

Excellent and Portable Collection
This book (and all in the portable poets collection from Everyman's Library) is wonderfully presented, bound, printed and the size is truly perfect for carrying around day to day or packing for a trip. The selection of Tennyson's work is broad - as such it is has something for everyone and every occasion, though if you have or desire a complete collection your money would be best spent elsewhere, unless you don't mind duplicates. As with all Everyman's Library publications it is hardcover with a nice cloth page marker, making it all the more portable.

Wonderful text, but shy away from this edition!
I want to make it clear up front that the three star review is given not to the text (a masterpiece who, if I should ave chosen to give it three stars, would only ridicule myself), but to the IndyPublish hardcover edition, ISBN 1404309500. There are more than enough people commenting the story here already, so I'll limit myself to saying that it is a Victorian masterpiece, and that anyone interested in Arthurian legend or Victorian poetry should treat themselves this book. It really adds flesh and psychological realism to characters who, despite the fascinating, alien quality of Medieval treatments of Arthurian legend, are rather flat and one-dimensional.

Now, onward to the edition itself: I should probably blame myself, because the old maxime "if it's too good to be true, it probably is" has been proven once more. It is hardcover, true, and both the cover and paper quality is good if pedestrian. What I do object to, however, is the bare-bones edition. I may be a bit spoiled, but for a modern edition of a historical piece of literature, I expect a foreword and explanatory footnotes; even though Victorian England isn't THAT far away in time, there are still matters that will need explanation for the average reader. None of these are to be found in this book, in fact there's not even pages numbers on the content page in the front of the book. This, combined with the fact that the headers on all pages simply says "Alfred, Lord Tennyson" (left page) and "Idylls of the King" (right page) makes it extremely annoying to find the start of an idyll, the matter being made worse by the fact that no woven bookmark was included in the book, a minor point, but something I'd expect in most hardcover books.

As I've already said, I should have seen the publisher name IndyPublish, and an alarm should have rang in my head. I would presume these problems arise because the people who actually ordered the making of this book had nothing to do with the product design, but simply delivered the text. Basically, someone probably wanted to make an easy buck, reselling a bare bones edition of a public domain text. It's a shame, because with a few extra conveniences I would have given the edition five stars. I don't own it myself, but I've never been disappointed by a Penguin edition, so I guess I'll go with them the next time.

Something of Heroism, Something of Life
The greatness of Tennyson's epic poems lie in the careful mix of life and legend.We are drawn in by stories of great heroism and power, with clashing steel and gallant oaths.But we also are forced to explore and consider very normal things about life; being worn down by constant nagging, suspicious spouses, temper tantrums, and tired old men.As a result, the "epic" is also easy to relate to, without losing the grandeur of its time and deeds.

I cannot recommend this highly enough to people who want to know how chivalry may be recaptured in our world.

A Gift Well Received
I purchased this book for my seventeen year-old daughter, an avid reader of this genre and classics in general. Her reaction was very positive and was delighted that it also contained other work by Tennyson.

Not for the casual reader
The style of writting within this book differs greatly from what the casual reader is probably used to not only because of the poem format but the language as well. The Medieval style of speech is carried into this book and older words we dont hear any more are used as well. It takes a page or two to understand the flow. I did find this book interesting and very useful for my research into the Arthurian Legends but would not recommend it for casual reading. ... Read more

I am a Lit. buff and this is a well compiled book of all his greats I am quite happy with it.

Excellent and Portable Collection
This book (and all in the portable poets collection from Everyman's Library) is wonderfully presented, bound, printed and the size is truly perfect for carrying around day to day or packing for a trip. The selection of Tennyson's work is broad - as such it is has something for everyone and every occasion, though if you have or desire a complete collection your money would be best spent elsewhere, unless you don't mind duplicates. As with all Everyman's Library publications it is hardcover with a nice cloth page marker, making it all the more portable.
