1-0 out of 5 stars Try the J.G. Reeder stories instead
This novel by the once-famous mystery writer Edgar Wallace is fast-moving, but too cliche-ridden and predictable to be recommended.Once a certain nefarious character breaks free from custody, you'll be able to write a synopsis of the rest of the book without reading it.And here's a bit of a love scene:"He crushed her in his arms, his cheek against hers, his lips tingling with the caress of her hair."It goes on like that."The Daffodil Mystery" is free on Kindle, but perhaps not worth every penny. (On the other hand, the short stories in Wallace's collection "The Mind of J.G. Reeder" are still quite enjoyable, if you like early twentieth-century detective fiction.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly entertaining
This was a $4 book I downloaded on my Kindle. I remembered watching Edgar Wallace movies in Germany back in the 70s where they are very popular. To be honest, I didn't really expect much, but was pleasantly surprised.

The book seems to be set at around the turn of the century in London and Hertfordshire. A young lady working as a chashier for a rich spoilt heir turns down his advances and loses her job over it. The heir is taking the rejection very badly and swears revenge. He tries to frame her for theft but is stopped by his cousin, a sleuth who has returned from an extended sojourn in China. He is accompanied by his trusted Chinese sidekick, and both men are famous in China for hunting down dangerous criminals.. The story really starts when the heir is found murdered in a park, with daffodils on his chest. The young girl disappears and is an immediate suspect. The sleuth is falling in love with her and while chasing the murderer, also tries to exonerate the girl.

The story is fast-paced with some surprising twists, well written and great to read. One note of caution: the book was written in the 1920s and the references to China and the Chinese are interesting, to say the least. To be fair, Edgar Wallace described the English in as stereotypical way as the Chinese, and I would not let this put me off from enjoying a great period piece.

By the way, check out Edgar Wallace's life story on Wikipedia, really worth a read!

The Angel oj Terror Chapter I
THE hush of the court, which had been broken

Another breathless pause and he groped
beneath the desk and brought out a small
square of black silk and carefully laid it over
his white wig. Then he spoke:

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you Intersted
I found this story very enjoyable to read. The plot keeps the reader turning pages to see what will happen next and of course, the author works the characters to make the reader angry at some, frustrated at others. It keeps you going. For a free book I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars An oldie, but oh-so-goodie suspense thriller.
Looks can be deceiving and are in this wonderful suspenseful murder mystery! A young woman whose beauty is comparable to the beauty of angels is such a manipulative, homicidal, psychotic narcissistic (sp) genius and murderer. She is absolutely cold blooded and cold hearted and creates friendships and relationships in order to realize her goals of prestige and wealth.
This book is VERY well written and absolutely timeless; I thought that it was written fairly recently then found that it was first published in 1922!!! I could hardly put it down.I ordered it for my Kindle and realized to share it I needed to purchase the paperback; my mother can hardly wait to read it---I'm sure my father will read it too when she finishes. We have a reading circle consisting of family in two states and we send books around all the time.My Kindle does not leave my side; I may read this book again, in the meantime family can read the paperback version.
Highly recommended to anyone who is a serious mystery fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Clue of the Twisted Candle
This thriller by Edgar Wallace is a perfect example of the Edwardian era's suspense novels which were the most popular form of fiction after the pulp romances of that time.It depends upon twists and turns and unexpected surprises and keeps the reader wondering what's next. It also includes an unflappable hero and a thoroughly despicable villain (an Albanian aristocrat with an unlimited thirst for power and honor). Reading it today is a lot of fun and gives one a sense of that bygone era. ... Read more

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals. Edgar Wallace was born in Yarmouth, Greenwich, Norfolk. His biological parents were actors Richard Horatio Edgar (who never knew of his existence) and Mary Jane "Polly" Richards, nee Blair. Known as Richard Freeman, Edgar had a happy childhood, forming an especially close bond with 20-year-old Clara Freeman who became like a second mother to him. His foster-father George Freeman was an honourable and kind man and determined to ensure Richard received a good education. He is most famous today as the co-creator of "King Kong", writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story "King Kong" (1933) credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, The Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime. 4-0 out of 5 stars VERY mixed feelings about this book...
Sanders of the River is the first in a series of books that popular turn-of-the-20th-century author Edgar Wallace wrote, all of which featured Sanders, the commissioner for an undefined area of British colonial Africa (from the descriptions, probably the Gold Coast/Nigeria area).Though described as a novel, the book is really a series of linked short stories.

I really don't know how to feel about this book.On one hand, Edgar Wallace is an excellent writer in terms of setting atmosphere and telling a story.Africa in colonial days is a completely foreign place in terms of my prior knowledge, and he makes me really see, hear, feel and at times even smell the setting he writes about. The stories move along quickly and Sanders is something of a stoic nonentity as a hero, but it's always interesting to watch how he acts to resolve various problems that face him.

Most of the stories are the same:Sanders, as the British commmissioner, is the highest authority in the land under his control, and holds sway over various native groups living in that area. The plots involve either a foolish white person showing up with little to no understanding of the natives, and getting himself into trouble, or one or the other of the native tribes stirring up trouble.Either way, Sanders has to intervene and resolve the situation.

So my mixed feelings come in in that, there is no nice way to put this, the stories and the whole set up are racist to the core.Sanders exemplifies the sort of person Kipling meant when he urged British men to "take up the white man's burden".The natives are continually portrayed as simple, superstitious, easily manipulated, and not very bright. At best they are portrayed as child like and needing a firm hand; at worst they are stupid, greedy, violent brutes.Sanders' role is to watch over and protect the "good" (well behaved, docile) natives and intervene with strong measures when required. He resolves most native "uprisings" and crimes against other tribes or (heaven forfend) one of those foolish white travellers by hanging the ringleader.Lesser offenders are packed off to some coastal location to serve a prison term of hard labor. In Wallace's portrayal, the natives don't seem to really mind or resent Sanders' authority but recognize it as superior; one man, facing hanging by Sanders, even compliments him on the rumor that he is recognized as someone whose hangings are said to be quick and painless.

If you are interested in reading popular literature that very much portrays the British imperial attitudes at their highest point, this is a book you will want to look at.It's very readable and at times even funny (Sanders has a very dry wit), but the pernicious attitudes and assumptions underlying the stories gives me pause. It's not something I'd be comfortable giving to or reading to a child too young to understand the historical context.Even with my very mixed feelings and distaste for the racial attitudes on display, I am still interested in reading more of the stories in this series, particularly Bosambo of the River, as Bosambo is a very intriguing native character, sort of a charming trickster type, and I am hoping some of the stories are told from his point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars The White Man's Burden at work
If you are a "politically correct" person, I advise you to avoid this book, and all of Wallace's africa books, to avoid apoplexy. Alas for you, reality - both then and now - is simply not politically correct. (You might avoid Africa, too, if you don't want to get eaten!) For any one still having an open mind, this book provides an illuminating window on the life of a very primitive people, and one view of a practical way to deal with them. ... Read more

Product Description
a selection from: ONE - THE POETICAL POLICEMAN THE dayMr. Reeder arrived at the Public Prosecutor's office was indeed a day of fatefor Mr. Lambton Green, Branch Manager of the London Scottish and Midland Bank. That branch of the bank which Mr. Green controlled was situate at the corner ofPell Street and Firling Avenue on the 'country side' of Ealing. It is a fairlylarge building and, unlike most suburban branch offices, the whole of thepremises were devoted to banking business, for the bank carried very heavydeposits, the Lunar Traction Company, with three thousand people on itspay-roll, the Associated Novelties Corporation, with its enormous turnover, andthe Laraphone Company being only three of the L. S.M.'s customers.

On Wednesday afternoons, in preparation for the pay days of thesecorporations, large sums in currency were brought from the head office anddeposited in the steel and concrete strong-room, which was immediately beneathMr. Green's private office, but admission to which was gained through a steeldoor in the general office. This door was observable from the street, and toassist observation there was a shaded lamp fixed to the wall immediately above, which threw a powerful beam of light upon the door. Further security was ensuredby the employment of a night watchman, Arthur Malling, an army pensioner.

The bank lay on a restricted police beat which had been so arranged that theconstable on patrol passed the bank every forty minutes. It was his practice tolook through the window and exchange signals with the night watchman, his ordersbeing to wait until Malling appeared.

On the night of October 17th Police Constable Burnett stopped as usual beforethe wide peep-hole and glanced into the bank. The first thing he noticed wasthat the lamp above the strong-room door had been extinguished. The nightwatchman was not visible, and, his suspicions aroused, the officer did not waitfor the man to put in an appearance as he would ordinarily have done, but passedthe window to the door, which, to his alarm, he found ajar. Pushing it open, heentered the bank, calling Malling by name.

There was no answer.

Permeating the air was a faint, sweet scent which he could not locate. Thegeneral offices were empty and, entering the manager's room in which a lightburnt, he saw a figure stretched upon the ground. It was the night watchman. Hiswrists were handcuffed, two straps had been tightly buckled about his knees andankles.

The explanation for the strange and sickly aroma was now clear. Above thehead of the prostrate man was suspended, by a wire hooked to the picture-rail,an old tin can, the bottom of which was perforated so that there fell anincessant trickle of some volatile liquid upon the thick cotton pad whichcovered Malling's face.

Burnett, who had been wounded in the war, had instantly recognised the smellof chloroform and, dragging the unconscious man into the outer office, snatchedthe pad from his face and, leaving him only long enough to telephone to thepolice station, sought vainly to bring him to consciousness.

The police reserves arrived within a few minutes, and with them thedivisional surgeon who, fortunately, had been at the station when the alarm camethrough. Every effort to restore the unfortunate man to life provedunavailing.

'He was probably dead when he was found,' was the police doctor's verdict.'What those scratches are on his right palm is a mystery.'

He pulled open the clenched fist and showed half a dozen little scratches. They were recent, for there was a smear of blood on the palm.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Wallace's Best, But Still Amusing
These short stories featuring the unassuming and nerdy J G Reeder are in the vein of better stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, and The Thinking Machine. Each is nicely, if predictably, plotted, and the writing is sometimes fun, but they don't have the narrative snap of Wallace's better work. So: if you like vintage mystery short stories, you may appreciate these, but read some GK Chesterton, AC Doyle and Jacques Futrelle first....

3-0 out of 5 stars An irritatingly successful detective
A shabby, weak-faced middle-aged man strikes terror in the hearts of criminals. J.G. Reeder, the self confessed "man-with-a-criminal-mind" is most irritating to a reader in the sense that his success is almost guaranteed! Sometimes you feel a little bit sorry for the criminals...

Twisting, thrilling, but nonetheless, a little disappointing. J.G. Reeder (in the service of the Public Prosecutor's Office) is not one who will capture the imagination of most detective fiction fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled to see it back in print!
I read a first edition copy and I'm thrilled to see this book back in print. It was originally published in 1925.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I had solved the mystery 2/3 of the way through the story. The book reads like a Saturday matinee serial with quick chapters, lots of action and cliff hangers. The romance at the end feels tacked on. There is no reason for the detective and the librarian to fall for each other! ... Read more
