Product Description
My Larger Education: Being Chapters from My Experience [1911]. IT HAS been my fortune to be associated all my life with a problem a hard, perplexing, but important problem. There was a time when I looked upon this fact as a great misfortune. It seemed to me a great hardship that I was born poor, and it seemed an even greater hardship that I should have been born a Negro. I did not like to admit, even to myself, that I felt this way about the matter, because it seemed to me an indication of weakness and cowardice for any man to complain about the condition he was born to. Later I came to the conclusion that it was not only weak and cowardly, but that it was a mistake to think of the matter in the way in which I had done. I came to see that, along with his disadvantages, the Negro in America had some advantages, and I made up my mind that opportunities that had been denied him from without could be more than made up by greater concentration and power within.Perhaps I can illustrate what I mean by a fact I learned while I was in school. I recall my teacher's explaining to the class one day how it was that steam or any other form of energy, if allowed to escape and dissipate itself, loses its value as a motive power. Energy must be confined; steam must be locked in a boiler in order to generate power. The same thing seems to have been true in the case of the Negro. Where the Negro has met with discriminations and with difficulties because of his race, he has invariably tended to get up more steam. When this steam has been rightly directed and controlled, it has become a great force in the upbuilding of the race. If, on the contrary, it merely spent itself in fruitless agitation and hot air, no good has come of it. Paradoxical as it may seem, the difficulties that the Negro has met since emancipation have, in my opinion, not always, but on the whole, helped him more than they have hindered him. 2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, if we were in 1910
I read this book, here in Brazil.
This book was writen in 1901, mainly by American professor, colored and writer Booker T. Washington(April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915). Mrs. Fannie Barrier Williams(February 12, 1855 - March 4, 1944)also wrote a part of this book. Fannie Barrier Williams was also an African-American.
There's more than four dozens of photos in this book. All of them are black & white photos.
The first chapter is about the causes of Spanish-American War. It uses then availale informations, not the correct informations, available today. The chapter XVI - "Fathers To the Race" - I found as good, even for today's standards.
The author never claims to be legal racism, but when he gaves support to racism's foes, I realized that Booker T. Washington never liked racism, in any sense.
Today the main value of this book is to see, how terrible was to live in 1901, when USA was the richest country in the world, but medicine, science and social values were terrible for today's standards.
How good is to live today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Side of Booker T. That Most Don't See
Most people who have any familiarity of BTW have heard the oversimplified stereotype that he was supposedly an "Uncle Tom", etc. This shows the fallacy of that thinking. Here, BTW tells off the Governor of South Carolina in 1895 for cutting off funds for Black schools "if you think education is expensive-try ignorance!" and socks it to the Louisiana Legislature for allowing Blacks to be lynched "I heard a boy say "today I have seen a man hanged and I shall soon see one burned. Before I hear such a remark from one of my sons I would rather see him in his grave." read it, and you'll be surprised. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the famous author
I bought this book because it came up in a search for the famous author Booker T. Washington (1856 - 1915), the former slave and dynamic intellectual leader of African-Americans throughout the Reconstruction period. This particular book is *not* by that famous author. It is by a modern living author whose name happens to be "Booker T. Washington."Do not be confused. This author has had experience in the Marine and is a former Netcom employee. This is a patriotic, positive-thinking, Bible-quoting self help book.It has chapters like "How to Develop a Positive Attitude" and "My Positive Attitude 10 Step Plan." It is a far cry from what the penetratingly brilliant founder of Tuskegee University would have written.Make sure you understand what this book is and what it isn't before you purchase it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Booker T. Washington
I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.

This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library. ... Read more
