Quit While You're Ahead
Ever hear the phrase quit while you're ahead?

Hickman and Weis were well ahead. They should have quit.

Leaving the Companions to wander off into the sunset was the ending those characters deserved.

Finishing up with the whole 'The Gods didn't leave us, we left them,' idea was just fine.

They had written six really well done, beautifully characterized, interestingly plotted books, which dealt with religious and moral issues in a manner more subtle than most books aimed at younger adults tend to.

And then they wrote Dragons of Summer Flame. I saw another reviewer suggest that this book was written "to nuke" the world they had created. If that's true, they succeeded beyond what could have been their wildest hopes and dreams. They spent 300+ pages abusing their characters, even ones who really should have been well past abuse, and ripping what made their world unique to pieces.

If you loved the Chronicles or Legends, just don't read this. If your favorite character was a certain hour glassed eyed mage, then please, by the love of all that is good and holy, put the book back on the shelf and pick up your old copy of Time of the Twins and re-read that. You'll be much, much happier.

Dragonlance Review
The book is awsome, however it is not what I was looking for. I was looking for the graphic novel that looks like a comic book.

The End of the Best set of Fantasy Heros Every Created
I could get into character, writing issues, why things may have been done, etc. But many others have already done that, I was extremely unhappy with this book. It was actually written OK, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why ALL the heros of the lance were killed in this. It just does not make sense to me, then I kind got into some of the Lance heros children. Like Palin, Tanin, Gilthanis, they all get killed off too between the "Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame" It seemed that for whatever reason, the whole entire bloodline of the heros of the lance were set out to be destroyed. I have read books in Ebberron, Grey Hawk, Etc. The Chronicles and Legends are still the best series of books I have ever read, I have not found any others that are in the same realm as these. I just think there could have been many other ways to have done the continuing story line different and better, there was not a need to kill everyone off and their children as well. I can understand wanting to put in new blood / characters into the mix. But this was not the Detriot Lions or the Bengals, we did not need a complete overhaul. I was let down, to be brought up with the liking of some of the children to the heros of the Lance, to be brought back down when they are pretty much all killed as well. I will go with another comment I have seen, I will re read the the first two series containing the Heroes of the Lance and the Meetings Sextets. Pretend the the Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame were bad dreams.

AWSOME!!
This book is friggin awsome!! Even for people who have never read the DLC.But for people who have, this book is deep in reminiscence.
Basically picture this: "good and evil have to combine in order to destroy a threat that wants to end ALL EXISTENCE, oh and two main characters die at the end too....so sad..

What have they done?
I mean, seriously, what were they been thinking?
First off, the kender stuff is overly used on chronicles and legends, ok we got it, it was funny, dont tell the same joke more than 3 times.
The descriptions of be with a kender is worse than fighting a troll is told so geek like, it kinda made me feel being a geek by reading this crap.
Palin is so a boring character only second maybe to the awful Laurana.
And why all the new heroes have to be the sons of the previous heroes? does heroisem go by blood line and not personality?
And why we need Palin if we have Raistlin back? at least Rasitlin was a true hero which had a lot of power aura around him.
Palin was said to be meant to be powefull, but i would put money on him fighting a scared mouse by the way his personality goes.
I quite liked Usha, she was very funny in her untrusting people manner and her simple thinking on life.
Steel was a very good character which i would build upon, like a normal person he had a good side and a dark side, people are not totally evil or totally good.
The end was a real dissapointment as Paladine sits back on the couch and let Steel, His Dragon, Palin, Usha and Tas to do the job. Where was the God Commander himself? if he cannot defeat chaos, how can his creations?
Another thing that dissapoints me is Takisis leaving, it is stupid to think that she does not care for the world, she has a different perspective from Paladine but still they both focus on this world. Making her leaving just poits her out more of a scared child rather the Queen of Darkness. But Paladine is no better as he was not doing anything much either.
And where the hell was Gilean, i know he writes history, but dude, the world comes to an end, cant you raise your lazy butt and do something?
Chaos is the source of all the gods, shouldn't it be that he be fought by his children, and Steel, Palin and all fight his generals?
If Chaos was defeated by mortals, how can we have respect for the gods in this book? Where was Raistlin that defeated Takisis, why couldn't he fight there and let Palin play with dolls at home?
Instead of making a grand finalle, Chaos was destroyed by the hands of a kender, is that what was i kept on reading for?
Is that the best you can make of?
This book had some nice moments, I couldn't ignore that, but he was really rushed and the plot eventually was lame. ... Read more

I bought it used
And loved it! Im not too thrilled with M.W. these days but I loved the 'Mag Force'!

Amazing piece of writing
I usually don't read Sci-Fiction, but this book caught my eye at the library, so I decided to give it a try, and I am so happy that I did. This story takes place in the same universe as the Star of the Gaurdians series (good series, but not as interesting as the Mag Force 7 series). This is a great book with a whole host of crazy characters, and more plot twists than a mystery novel. It follows the story of Xris, an ex-Federal agent who was betrayed by his own partner. He is now a cyborg, and the leader of a mercenary group called Mag Force 7. This adventure takes you all over the universe and introduces you to a whole bunch of interesting characters (Raoul and the Little One being the most interesting). This is a must have for any Sci-fi/Fantasy reader

Oh Well...
I happened upon this book which one of my children brought home this Spring. Is it readable? Yes, but I found the writing style awkward and somewhat confusing. The Characters and plot devices were original, but shallow. Call me a geek, but I would have liked more information on how and why a nano-machine would explode and why only one individual in the galaxy possessed this apparently useful innovation than listen to our hero lament the loss of his wife, his best bud, and various body parts. Read it if the book falls in your lap, but don't expect Heinlein.

Great endings
I think the Legacy of the darksword is a great finish and a must read if you've read the Darksword Trilogy. It;s the kkind of book that wraps up alot, expands on the original story, and still leaves you asking for more.

Loved it!!
I have read and enjoyed the Darksword Trilogy, so when I saw this, I had to buy it, and it did not disappoint me, it is every bit as good as the trilogy. I just loved it.

Good time-killer, noticeable flaws
I was fairly interested in this book when I started reading it, and I will admit, some of the story kept me interested enough to continue reading it until the end.But the book was lacking depth in key areas and could have done with a more cohesive plot.Worse still was the ending, which not only ruined the plot as a whole, it also thudded into place in a graceless and poorly written clump.Definitely enjoyed the potential of this book much more than the book itself.

The worst W&H book ever
I was a big fan of the original series, but this capstone is just dreadful.Either my tastes have matured, or W&H forgot how to write well.The characters are all flat and undeveloped (to those who say you have to read the earlier stuff first, I did, but sorry, this is 20 years later, every single character should have changed at least a little and we need to see that).The plot was lame and really only got up to speed in the last 50 pages, so the first 200 pages are a total waste of time.I'd still recommend their earlier stuff, but avoid this one, unless you want to read one of the worst fantasy books of all time.The ending is so ridiculous it made me laugh, Deus Ex Machina for sure.Maybe they were having personal troubles when they wrote this one, but still, an editor should have been on top of it.I guess since W&H sell so well, all they want is the name.If no stars were an option, I'd have selected it.I feel cheated not just for wasting my time on this book, but for ruining wonderful memories of this series, which had been one of my favorites back in the day. ... Borrow it from the library
Like someone else said, the back cover is a lie - there are no maps. Basically I borrowed this book from the library because of the first 50 pages which contain interviews with Weis & Hickman. This is really interesting stuff, covering :
- their backgrounds
- how they got to TSR
- how the whole DragonLance project started
- how they got chosen to write the books and the incredibly short time frames they had - they wrote the first DragonLance book in under 2 months!

My advice, read this section, forget the rest. It ain't worth buying but definitely worth borrowing.

Great reference
If your looking for an autobiography, novel or a new story, you've come to the wrong place.This is a very detailed reference book FULL of information, with only a little new meterial (like about the author's lives).If you are a longtime fan of the author's, however, this can be agreat book to have.After having already read the books of Weis andHickman, reading this book can remind you what happened, clarify confusingpoints, or simply bring back memories of a great story.

Short Sword in Long Scabbard
If you want to know more about the worlds created by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, this book will give you a good amount of information on the various settings. The bulk of the book is a comprehensive and considerablydetailed encyclopedia separated into five different sections -- each onededicated to a particular series (i.e. the Death Gate Cycle, theDragonlance Novels, etc.). The book is also wonderfully supplied withbeautiful full-color paintings from the novels, black and white photographsof the authors in the Interviews chapter, and a helpful book-by-bookanalysis of the authors' various works. The first problem, however, withthis potentially great work is that the description at the back of the bookmisleads the reader. It promises "numerous black-and-white DRAWINGSand MAPS to each world." This is false. There are absolutely NO MAPSwithin the book, and the only black and white pictures are mostlyphotographs. It's disappointing because detailed maps wouldhave greatlyaided the encyclopedia entries. And a well-structured timeline would havelikewise been invaluable and much appreciated. The encyclopedia entriesalso need more information. Some descriptions are only a sentence long. Inaddition, the book-by-book analysis in the first chapter completely leftout the Dragonlance Novels (which I find particularly sinful, because itwas the Dragonlance Series that catapulted Weis and Hickman to fame.) Somuch more could have been added visually. The writing content could havebeen packed with meatier annotations and previously unknown trivia. I guessI'll have to wait for another,worthier attempt at these magnificent fantasyrealms.

This is a great book
This book is really really cool. Weis and Hickman are awesome authors, and this book is great for fans of them. It has all their books, from the dragonlance to death gate to darksword, and even some of their solo workslike the star of the guardians. I love it, a definite good buy.

An excellent anthology...
Here Margaret Weis has put together (another) collection of gems by well-known and beloved writers in the fantasy genre.This is a fun book, chock-full of memorable, quirky, and original tales that might have been missed or mis-laid and never heard from again had not Weis collected and re-released them.It's worth a read, especially if you're a short-story fan, and it's worth a re-read every now and then.You really should do yourself a favor and buy it - quick, before it goes out of print!

Best series by Margaret Weis.
This truly is a galatic fantasy, as the author describes.Real emotions were portrayed by the main characters, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys well thought out and creative story telling.

Star of the Guardians Gets Better With Every Page!
King's Sacrifice continues the great story of Dion Starfire and his spiritual struggles. Dion so badly wants to become a man and assume the throne. His interactions with Sagan and the StarLady, as Sagan's men now call Maigrey Morianna, keep tugging at him mercilessly.

Dion becomes involved with the leader of an ancient priesthood from the Order of Dark Lightning. He trusts the man will take him straight to the throne, but Abdiel has plans of his own. Sagan and Maigrey must use everything they've been given to overcome Abdiel and bring Dion safely back to reality.

A whole new group of wonderful characters emerge in this book. Hung Out wraps up the Mag Force 7 series
Xris and Mag Force 7 have been hired by someone unknown for a mission.However, right when the mission is to start, Xris is arrestd.......for murdering Dalin Rowan.Everyone knows this charge is fake....but he getssent to jail for another mission....to break the Hung leaders out of Jango. But Xris must do this by himself, while the rest of the group completesthe mission.There is a rat in FISA, but who is it, and why do they wantXris dead?

The Knights of the Black Earth
The Knights of the Black Earth (Margaret Weis isa fantastic book, which I could not drop for three days. It includes Sci-fi, drama, action and much more.

It features wonderful characters, with a huge variety and evenintroduces old favourites from the Star of the Gaurdians series (alsoMargaret Weis). It is a must read.

A Breath of Fresh Air!
Maybe most people wouldn't exactly call this book a classic: it takes pride in being frivolous and fun and steering clear of too many deep messages with its tongue-in-cheek action.Nor can it seriously be called a science fiction book - this is straight fantasy, but at its absolute pinnacle.When people read this they don't seem to notice all the good things it's doing, not only is it the most enjoyable adult fantasy book I have ever read, but it presents a fantastic female character in Merinda Neskat, which should be particularly appreciated in this genre when we run the risk of being swamped by females like Eddings' Ce'Nedra, Feist's Carline, or any of Gemmel's gorgeous young heriones inexplicably attracted by the 40+ year-old hardened hero.
Starshield is a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre!For once it's trying something new and, even more amazing - it succeeds completely!I have become so sick of the fantasy genre where everything is so formulaic: medieval setting with magic; a huge war between good and evil involving at least one royal person... etc, etc.Starshield is wonderfully different.The science fiction/fantasy blend is superb.Weis and Hickman's universe creation is entertainingly ridiculous, yet not so much as to be entirely unbelieveable so the reader doesn't feel alienated.Jeremy Griffiths is the quintessential anti-hero, while Merinda is perfect as the tough herione.Sure, the TFP processors are a ridiculous idea, but you can forgive anything in this book.Nightsword is a great follow-up to it.
The only thing I can say against Starshield is that, because of its lack of popularity, it seems that the final book of the trilogy will never be published.This is a real tragedy, particularly considering the popularity of Weis and Hickman's other, far more mediocre books.However, Starshield and Nightsword also work as stand-alone books, so this doesn't damage a reading of them.
This book fully deserves a rating of 5/5: it's a near-perfect book and a true masterpiece of modern fantasy.

Starshield Novel
This was an excelent book, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman lived up to their reputation.It starts off a little slow, like many new series but quickly picks up and is a page turner.

Excellent plot/characters etc. But unrealistic basis
I have read many sci fi books in my time but few were as beutifully orchestrated and fully satisfying. Though I enjoyed the book(s) the whole thing rests on the basis of two different and totally unreasonable factsthat being the synths and the fact that physics is different all over. Thephysics thing I'm willing to swallow but a synth works by going backwardsto the beginning of its life in order to process a question? WHAT!!

I adore and venerate the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends.I think the Rose of the Prophet and Deathgate Cycle are incredible.SO WHAT WENT WRONG HERE?!?For whatever reason, with this book Weis & Hickman seem tohave lost pretty much everything that made them great.The characters arebland, the story is non-compelling, and I can't say I found this particularuniverse to be particularly intriguing.It really seems like they'reflailing around trying to regain their former splendor here; we haveanother Fizban character; that was cool in the Deathgate Cycle, but it justseems like a desperate attempt to breathe life into a fairly useless bookto me.How this happened, I cannot imagine.Let's hope that futureprojects redeem these talented authors.

I'm 14 years old, but still I loved this book.The characters were exceptionally and wonderfully crafted.Weis and Hickman sure know how to write a good sci-fi novel.I can't wait till their next Starshied novel(Starsheild-Buccanears) comes out at the beginning of '98.I'm an author myself, and currently working on a book I hope to publish soon.Back to Starshield though-- the plot was great, and the futuristic devices the 2 authors crafted-- brilliant.From the ship defense systems to the transparent fly dragons.Anyway, I recommend this book to any science fiction fan.I certainly had lots of fun reading it ... Wasn't as good as I remember
I read the Dragonlance books as a child and I am now going back through them to decide which ones to keep. This book is definitely not one of the books I will keep. I agree with other reviews that Tasslehoff's story is good. It is very entertaining, but since it is only ~70 pages I can't justify keeping the book for that reason. Douglas Niles and Richard Knaak's tales are decent, but I wasn't exactly thrilled by the other stories. I remember the other Tales books being more entertaining. With all that being said if I was still a huge Dragonlance fan and I saw this book in the library or at a used book store it might be worth picking up for the few good stories.

A fun read.
A great book to read if you just can't get enogh of the original DL trilogies.The book is full of fun stories that will give you a little more insight into Kyrnn during the war of the lance.

I have to give all the short story novels 3 stars. There are some stories you won't like but they'll 2-4 really great ones that will make the books worth the price.

One Awesome story, One pretty good one,and lots of bad ones.
I agree with the other guy who said that there was only one good story.The Story that Tasslehoff Promised he Would Never, Ever Tell (which is the real name of the story) was spectacular.It captured the mystery behindthe lances.Were they magical, or just steel?The ending of the storystill leaves this mystery unsolved.That is excellent literature.Anotheris war machines.It captures the humorous aspect of gnome machinery and agnome of many working to perfect his life quest.The rest is absolutelyterrible.One other note...I expected the Vingaard Campaign to be awesome. It was terrible.

A decent collection of fantasy stories
Legends is the first of Margaret Weis' thematically linked stories from "The Eternal Archives."The linked material is a very slender and slight suggestion that all of the stories are culled from a mysticalLibrary.

The Stories themselves range in tone and subject, fromLindskold's treatment of a Chinese mythological fable of the white tiger tostories of subjects as diverse in subject as Ancient Egypt, and awater-nymph infatuated with a U-boat Captain.

Very Nice Anthology! Good Fantsty Read!
If you liked Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword & Sorceress series, you'll enjoy this book too.Great book about strong women and what they do.Breast cancer poem really touched me as my mom died of breast cancer in 2005. For a Daughter was my favorite even though it does not end on a total bright note.The Ivory Comb was a funny folktale!In the Lost Lands is a werewolf story of a sort or rather don't ask Grey Alys for anything!I enjoyed Lee's work as always.You will find some authors you will recognize from S&S and the Chicks series.

I bought this book on impulse and found it much better than I expected. The poem about fighting breast cancer (called "Sacrifices") is worth the price of the book alone. I found the first story, "Emrys" a bit too negative and intense, but there is an excellentvariety of other stories in this 326 page volume. "Shadow", astory that contains more than a fair share of suffering, has a sparklingsurprise twist ending. My favorite story is "Three Choices: The Storyof Lozen". This is a historical fictional account of the historicallyFACTUAL life of the Apache warrior/medicine woman, Lozen, who fought withGeronimo's band.
