Product Description
This is a collection of Wyattís Petrarchan sonnets, songs, ballads, epigrams and rondeaux. The poems, in meticulously wrought stanzas, are mainly about love: love lost, won, and desired. Wyatt was the first of the great English Renaissance love poets. Wyattís poetry is too often neglected, beside towering talents such as Spenser, Shakespeare and Marlowe. Poems attributed to Wyatt are also here. ... Read more

Product Description
As a diplomat in Renaissance Europe, and a luminary at the court of Henry VII, Sir Thomas Wyatt wrote in an incestuous world where everyone was uneasily subject to the royal whims and rages. Wyatt had himself survived two imprisonments in the Tower as well as a love affair with Anne Boleyn, and his poetry - that of an extraordinarily sophisticated, passionate and vulnerable man - reflects these experiences, making disguised reference to current political events. Above all, though, Wyatt is known for his love poetry, which often dramatizes incidents and remembered conversations with his beloved, with an ear acutely sensitive to patterns of rhythm and colloquial speech. Conveying the actuality of betrayal or absence, and the intense pressure of his longing for a love that could be trusted, these are some of the most haunting poems in the English language. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The authoritative work
This is the authoritative book on the subject of this the first modern English Poet - more neglected than he ought to be - out of print in Europe - Wyat survived life as a courtier/diplomat in the court of Henry 8th - a king as corrupted by power as its possible to be - a 16th C saddam Hussein - and yet produced these deeeply sensitive poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest poets in the English language
His voice still rings beautiful and true after five hundred years. What he has to say concerns our daily lives in this hard, competitive society as much as the intrigues of the Henrician court.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first bright light of English Renaissance poetry
Wyatt is, quite simply, a brilliant poet, taking the Petrarchan love poem and adapting it to represent life in the promiscuous court of Henry VIII.And "They Flee from Me" is one of the greatest poems in theEnglish language.Rebholz's introduction and notes make this THE editionfor serious study of Wyatt's achievement. ... THE POETRY OF SIR THOMAS WYATT A SELECTION AND A STUDY by E. M. W. TILLYARD. Originally published in London in 1929. PREFACE: THE aim of this book is to call attention to an author who, though sometimes appreciated justly, has never really received his due. Wyatt to the general literary public is still the importer of the Sonnet into England, and the author of some half a dozen lyrics that deserve a place in the anthologies. In reality he is something more a man of remarkable character, part of which has been made accessible to us through the medium of a number of short poems. Less precisely he can be called an important lyric poet. To further my aim two things seemed necessary a new anthology and a new appreciation. Selections from Wyatt exist within anthologies of Tudor lyrics, but they are not full enough to give an adequate idea of him. On the other hand, the com plete works can be unduly forbidding. Most of the poems are apprentice work, and the general reader who attempts the bul ... Read more
