5-0 out of 5 stars Twisted humour
The last book authored by Zelazny. It's a reverse quest, and it is, unfortunately, another novel that was finished posthumously. Established in an archtypal fantasy setting, the plot revolves around quests that either return powerful artifacts or hide them once again in case they are required to be used some time in the future.
The tone is jovial, for the most part, with bit parts, humour, slaptstick and even the ever present straight man (or woman) required for dry wit and flat puns. Keeping a straight face throughout the novel is more than difficult, especially some of the fight scenes that include a northern barbarian maid with a battle ax fondly named 'Castrator'.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a comedy
It didn't become apparent to me the first time through until I got to the second story.Zelazny's interludes all seem pretty serious, but the actual stories themselves are meant as comedies, and work pretty well as such. Also, don't be fooled by the cover. Most of this writing was not done by Zelazny himself. But they are good stores nonethless and worth picking up.

4-0 out of 5 stars This last work of a great one is, well, great
In this last work of Roger Zelazny, he culled together a grouping of four absolutely top-notch authors for a collaborative effort.Mike Stackpole, David Drake, Robert Asprin and Jane Lindskold each chronicle an individual quest of recently separated companions. The quests are to return to safekeeping various magical items whose combined presence is tearing up the very fabric of reality.

Stackpole gives us the story of the loyal assassin and his mission to return a powerful amulet to its former resting place, now that it's use is no longer required. In his quest for the most absolutely perfect ways of killing his enemies, the assassin has surpassed all others, confronting his former teacher in a climactic battle over ownership of the powerful item.I personally feel this to have been one of Stackpole's best works, and on its merit alone is this book an excellent read.

David Drake gives us the story of an elf and a norse woman determined to rid themselves of a powerful ring. They set out across a terribly desolate region to dispose of the ring, with incredible danger and death hounding them the whole way.Personally I considered this the least of the stories -- I just could not get into it, although the dialogue between the questors and the ring is amusing at times.

Asprin provides the funniest of the stories, with a dragon's perspective of an encounter with a warrior. You see, the warrior figures to get the dragon to guard the deadly sword he has been commissioned to dispose of.The dragon has other ideas. The solution to the dilemma is very nicely devised by the hero, as is the slight twist ending.I really enjoyed this story.

Lindskold gives us the quest of the Army's best commander to return an ancient scroll from whence it came.During the journey, various things arouse her suspicions as to the true motives behind the quests on which she and her erstwhile companions have been sent.Realizing a great danger is building, she hastens home to the upcoming wedding and coronation of the nation's newly acknowledged monarchs.

Preceding each story, and wrapping up the saga is a bridging story by Zelazny himself. These stories form the backbone of the global picture, as it were.In fact, these could almost be read as a well-written story unto themselves, with the intervening stories merely fleshing out the details.Since that was the plan, it was carried off quite successfully.I highly recommend this book, especially for those who enjoy slightly off-the-wall fantasy, as this book possesses that in spades.Happy reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun.
To my knowledge this is the last work of Roger Zelanzny probably bestknown for his"Amber" series. To the end he was a great writer and I am sure that anyone who has read his work will regret the fact that no new masterpieces will be coming. I am glad, however, that he finished as he started - working on a fun book which any fantasy readers should enjoy.

"Forever After," is a fantasy story which is reportedly about what happens after the villain is defeated. What happens after the hero and heroine live "happily ever after?"Here some of the closest friends and companions of the hero Rango, soon to be King, are sent on four separate quests to hide the magic tools needed to win the war, but which now, by being so close together, disrupt reality and threaten the kingdom itself.

Each quest is written was by a different author. They include Michael Stackpole, David Drake, Robert Lynn Aspirin and Jane Lindskold. The prefaces, interlude and postlude are written by Roger Zelazny.Remarkably, the quality of most of the stories is very high.I especially enjoyed reading Robert Aspin, one of the funniest fantasy writers around,(Remember Skeeve?) tellingthe story of a noble knight and a dragon, from the dragon's perspective.

Stackpole's story, about a gloomy assassinheart sick over a woman general who has rejected him, burdened by a fat, but well meaning servant, and searching for his father's killer, his former master, was outstanding. In the end, my discovery of Mr. Stackpole, probably was the best thing about reading this book.He is a superb writer and I look forward to reading his other work in the future.

It is fittingthat "Forever After's" theme, that life continues even after the story is over, was Zelanzy's last work.Life does go on.But, if it does, does that mean we can't stop and say thank you to someone who entertained so much and so well over the years? Thanks and good byeMr. Zelazny.I hope the afterlife appreciates you as much as your fans down here do.

5-0 out of 5 stars The authorative collection of Zelazny's Poetry
Released in 1981 in a Edition of 720 books. 20 were marked presentation, and 200 were signed and numbered.

A excellent introduction by Author Ursala Le Guin starts off the book.

Roger Zelazny had a wonderful command of words.
This book features alot of his early poems, and his more recent poems.

My favorite short poem from this volume is very representative of this volume.

Chorus Mysticus

Beginning with a snort and ending with a sigh,
time cannot raze nor confusion alter
this monument we rear against the gods.

If you're a fan of Roger Zelazny, but you've never read any of his Poetry then search this volume out. It's nothing like his books, but you can sometimes see little hints of what was to come later. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine early Nebula anthology
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The book opens with JG Ballard's"The Cloud-Sculptors of Coral D",
a fine Vermilion Sands story:moody, atmospheric, gorgeously
written, if slight of content. There are better stories in Ballard's
Vermilion Sands collection, which is well-worth seeking out --
especially if you're new to Ballard, or to land-coral, sonic statues and
the eccentric habitues of Vermilion Sands, a future seaside resort in

picturesque decline.

"Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes" is a solid Harlan Ellison "down & out in
Las Vegas" tale:the protagonist drops his literal last dollar into a slot-
machine and hits the jackpot -- three blue eyes across, intead of three
cherries. Then he hits the jackpot again -- and again. Someone in
there likes him...A nicely-done urban fantasy, with a nasty twist.

Then-new writer Gary Wright has faded so far from view that he
doesn't even rate an entry in the current Encyclopedia of Science
Fiction, but I think you'll like his "Mirror of Ice", a gripping story of
future toboggan-races on suicidally-steep courses. The nameless
viewpoint racer is making 'one last run', and it's a dilly. Fine
straight-ahead sports-adventure writing -- hasn't aged a bit. I wonder
what became of Wright?

Samuel R. Delaney won the short-story Nebula for "Aye, and
Gomorrah..." -- he also took home the novel award that year for The
Einstein Intersection. Delaney's spacers have had... unusual surgical
adaptations -- "loose, swinging meat" -- and troll for Earthbound
frelks -- space-groupies -- on their time off. "Gomorrah" has
resonances I missed back in the sixties, but it's a fine, memorable
story on any level.

"Gonna Roll the Bones" is my favorite Fritz Leiber: it's unbelievably
good, one of the best SF novelletes ever written -- more than
deserving of the 1967 Nebula it won. If you've been reading SF for
awhile, you'll remember this one -- it's another gambling story,
which develops into a deal with the devil. Joe Slattermill, Mr. Guts
the cat, the Big Gambler, Lottie the dice girl, whose "long, skinny
white-gloved arm... snaked out like an albino cobra" -- are
unforgettable. What a story! The sfnal apotheosis of the American tall
tale. Michael Swanwick writes that "Gonna Roll the Bones" is "a
story so good it makes my teeth ache with jealousy." If you've
somehow missed "Bones", well -- here's your chance, and the rest of
the book is gravy. I've read this story countless times, and it gets me
every time. And -- it has the best last line in the history of SF. See if
you agree...

I remember bouncing off Michael Moorcock's "Behold the Man"way
back when, and I read it this time mostly out of a sense of duty,
Nebula-winner or no. Moorcock just doesn't write to my taste, most
of the time, anyway. The plot here is simple enough: time-traveller
Glogauer is stranded in Judea, 29 AD. He's rescued by John the Baptist
and the Essenes, and...well, let's say he develops a serious Messiah-
complex.

"Behold" is certainly well-written and researched, and has a socko
finish, but I just don't care about religion -- or Mr. Glogauer, or his
neurotic girlfriend. "Behold" is written in a self-consciously 'literary'
style, which put me off, too. Anyway, editor Zelazny asks us to "read
[Behold] very carefully, please" -- but life is short. Hell with it.

But do give it a try -- tastes differ. Anyway, who do you trust -- me, or
the Nebula voters?

I must confess to being underwhelmed with Anne McCaffery's
Dragonriders of Pern series, but "Weyr Seach" is where it all began,
and it is interesting to see the setup of the sfnal premises for the
series. Her fans will enjoy "Search" , but 'mild pleasure' is the best I
can say after rereading this one.

Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A short but sweet collection of Poems
Released in 1980 and published in Australia, this one can be hard to find.
It's print run was only 1000 copies, the first 200 being signed by the Author.
It wouldn't be fair to compare this one to any of his Novels as Poetry flows
much differently.

If you can find this one, then by all means grab it at any price.

While not as comphrensive as his other Poetry volume titled
"To Spin Is Miracle Cat" this one is still very enjoyable.

One of my favorite Poem's in this volume is a short one, I'll include it here
so you can get a small flavor of the book.
