Membership in the Developemntal Biology Program is currently at 200 and includes researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians and support personal throughout Vanderbilt's campus. Program members utilize many different approaches in their attempt to answer developmental questions based on their particular field of study. Faculty members are from nine basic science and clinical departments and study a wide range of organisms from the fruit fly (see figure above) to humans. Students are encouraged to obtain in-depth training in developmental biology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics. The program also offers the opportunity for training in biomedical sciences, including gross anatomy, histology, and physiology. Thus, the program prepares students to compete for job opportunities in traditional medical and dental school departments as well as a productive research career in either the academia or industry.
