The 1850 Census of Cuyahoga Co, OH, lists his age as 30 (b. 1820), but his Civil War enlistment papers lists his age as 44 (b. 1819) and his place of birth as Virginia, VT (The closest VT town is Vergennes, Addison Co) The 1870 Census of Cuyahoga Co lists his age as 67 (b. 1803), while the Adams Co, IN Census of 1880 says he was 76 (b. 1804). The 1890 Census of Adams Co lists his age as 101 (b. 1799). An Adams Co. newspaper gives his DOB as 3 Apr 1799, Plattsburg, VT, but Plattsburg in Clinton Co, NY. The 1900 census says he was born in VT, with his father from Mass. and his mother born in France. He moved to Cleveland, OH, "as a young man". John served in Co. H, 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He moved his family to Adams Co, IN, around 1874, and is buried in the Reynolds Cemetary in Adams Co.

Extractions: Adams National Historical Park is located in the City of Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, approximately ten miles south of Boston. The Park comprises 11 historic structures and a cultural landscape totaling almost 14 acres. The story encompasses five generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927) including two Presidents and First Ladies, three United States Ministers, historians, writers and family members who supported and contributed to the success of these public figures. The site's main historic features include: John Adams Birthplace, where second United States President John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, and less than 75 yards away the John Quincy Adams Birthplace, where his son, John Quincy Adams, 6th United States President was born on July 11, 1767; the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family; the United First Parish Church, where both Presidents and the First Ladies are entombed in the Adams family crypt. There is an off-site visitor center located within one mile of the historic structures. Regularly scheduled tours of the historic homes, are offered in season (April 19th - November 10th). The park provides a trolley bus that offers transportation between sites. You must be on a guided tour to enter the historic homes. Please be advised that tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and generally the earlier you arrive, the less your possible wait before the next available tour.

On her mother's side she was descended from the Quincys, a family of great prestige in the colony; her father and other forebearers were Congregational ministers, leaders in a society that held its clergy in high esteem. Like other women of the time, Abigail lacked formal education; but her curiosity spurred her keen intelligence, and she read avidly the books at hand. Reading created a bond between her and young John Adams, Harvard graduate launched on a career in law, and they were married in 1764. It was a marriage of the mind and of the heart, enduring for more than half a century, enriched by time. Lynne Cheney Biography The young couple lived on John's small farm at Braintree or in Boston as his practice expanded. From 1811 until his death he served in the federal government, successively as congressman, secretary of war, VICE PRESIDENT , senator, secretary of state, and again as senator. Always he was at the heart of the issues of his time, notably the nullification crisis and the conflict over slavery. Loyal to his nation, to his state of South Carolina, and, above all, to his principles, he sought to preserve the union while advancing Southern interests. Early Career Born in Abbeville district, S.C., on March 18, 1782, Calhoun grew up in an atmosphere of controversy and social change. The extension of cotton culture was bringing slavery into the up-country, where small farmers like his father were challenging the political dominance of the low-country planters. Calhoun was largely self-educated before he entered Yale as a junior in 1801. He graduated with honors in 1804; went on to law school, in Litchfield, Conn.; and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1807. Practicing in his native district, he quickly gained the reputation that took him to the state legislature. There, from 1809 to 1811, he helped establish an enduring balance of power between South Carolina's tidewater planters and piedmont farmers.
