    Extractions: His father was an upholsterer and coffin-maker, though, surprisingly, he produced a Handel opera. Thomas went to Eton College, played flute and violin and taught himself composition. His sister and brother were both singers, as was his wife, Cecilia, whom he married in 1737, and they all performed in his operas and masques. In 1742 he went to Dublin, where his music was very popular, and on returning to London in 1744 he was appointed resident composer at the Drury Lane Theatre. Henceforth he worked closely with Garrick, who was actor-manager there. In 1759 the University of Oxford conferred on him the degree of doctor of music.

His father was a London tradesman, who enjoyed some reflected glory by virtue of the fact that he was used as the model for Addison`s Political Upholsterer It was that eminent musicologist, Charles Burney, who gave Thomas Arne his first systematic instruction in music. Arne`s father, however, was vigourously opposed to music as a career. And so, in his adolescence, Thomas Arne was sent to Eton for the purpose of studying law. But, as Burney wrote, 'his love for music operated upon him too powerfully for his own peace, or that of his companions; for with a miserable cracked flute, he used to torment them night and day when not obliged to attend school.' As the years passed, music drew Arne more and more ineluctably to its bosom. When he left school, he borrowed a servant`s uniform so that he might gain admission to the upper gallery of the opera which was reserved for domestics. As an articled clerk in an attorney`s office, he saved his earnings in order to buy a spinet which he smuggled into his bedroom; muffling its strings with handkerchiefs, he would practice upon it during the night when his family was in bed. With equal secrecy he took lessons upon the violin, and so amazed his father, one day, by playing upon it, that he finally succeeded in gaining permission to follow the study of music seriously. Rosamond , an opera, based upon a libretto of Addison. This was performed at the Lincoln`s Inn Fields Theatre the following year and was well-received. Thomas Augustine Arne born in King Street, Covent Garden, London on or about March12th, 1710 and baptized eleven weeks later on May 28th, at the church of St. Paul's, Covent Garden. Arne's father and grandfather were both upholsterers and both became officials of the City Company of Upholsterers. His grandfather unfortunately fell upon hard times and died in the Marshalsea prison for debtors. Arne's father on the other hand earned enough money not only to rent a large house in Covent Garden but also to have his son Thomas educated at Eton College. But later in life he also managed to lose most of his wealth and had to earn extra cash by acting as a numberer of the boxes at Drury Lane Theatre. The young Arne was so keen on music that he smuggled a spinet into his room and, dampening the sounds with his handkerchief, would secretly practise during the night while the rest of the family slept. He also, according to the musical historian Charles Burney , dressed up as a liveryman in order to gain access to the gallery of the Italian Opera. It was at the opera that Arne first met the musician and composer Michael Festing Festing was a major influence on Arne. He not only taught him to play the violin but also took him to various musical events including going to hear Roseingrave compete for the post of organist at Hanover Square and a visit to Oxford in 1733 to hear Handel's opera

Vocal Music Above all Arne is remembered popularly for his patriotic composition Rule, Britannia, written for the dramatic work Alfred of 1740 and for his settings of Shakespearean songs, including Where the bee sucks from The Tempest, When daisies pied from Love's Labour's Lost and Blow, blow, thou winter wind from As You Like It. The comic opera Thomas and Sally or The Sailor's Return followed a 1760 revival by Arne of Gay's enduringly popular The Beggar's Opera.
