Hubeart Jr. I t cannot have been easy to have been a son of the great Johann Sebastian Bachor especially to undertake a career in music under the shadow of such a father. The most notable members of Sebastian’s progeny broke from their father’s influence like billiard balls escaping a neat triangular formation. Musically, they turned away from the traditions he had embodied, mainly because they knew themselves unable to surpass his outstanding achievements. In some cases, the paths of their lives also seemed to reflect rebellion against his legacy. Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84), Sebastian’s eldest son, became a rather tragic figure, abruptly abandoning his organist’s position in Halle in 1764 and never again holding a formal post, reduced to recycling his own music and plagiarizing his father’s. Johann Christian Bach (1735-82), youngest of Sebastian’s sons, abandoned Sebastian’s Lutheran faith after the latter's death, being received into the Roman Catholic Church during his years in Italy. Although Sebastian seems to have been especially fond of Christian, treating him as "the Benjamin of the family,"

Carl Philipp Emanuel began his career studying law (1731), but nine years later became court musician to crown prince Frederick (later "the Great"). For those who are familiar with his music or are interested in becoming acquainted with it, a program devoted exclusively to works by C.P.E. Bach has been directed by Horant H. Hohlfeld and will be available for Pay TV from Unitel in late 1998. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the "Sturm und Drang" movement of the late 18th century. Growing out of Baroque music and prefiguring the Romantic era, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel and Telemann, and those of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. C.P.E. Bach believed in the aesthetic tenets of his time, which demanded that music "touch the heart" and "awaken the passions".     Extractions: CPE Bach was the second surviving, and the most talented son of JS Bach's 20 children. He was educated at St Thomas's School in Leipzig under his father's guidance, but because he was left-handed he was at a loss with all musical instruments except for the keyboard. However, he excelled at this and, from the age of about 11, he was able to read at sight any clavier composition at which his father was working, by just looking over his shoulder. Like his elder brother Wolfgang Friedmann, CPE was sent to read Jurisprudence. He started at the University of Leipzig, then moved on to Frankfurt-on-Oder where his godfather, the composer Georg Phillip Telemann, was Kapellmeister. There, CPE Bach was active in the Collegium Musicum and the Music Academy while still a law student. He went to Berlin in 1737, where his fame as a keyboard performer was already great enough for him to be invited to play before Kaiser Wilhelm I, King of Prussia, and his son, the future Frederick the Great, who was a moderately talented flautist. In 1740, Prince Frederick had succeeded to the throne of Prussia and CPE Bach was delighted to be called back to Potsdam as court cembalist in the Royal Orchestra. He had been composing works for the flute and, because he was made to do the King's bidding all the time, Bach now regularly accompanied his employer in duets. The King often took liberties with tempos and was difficult to accompany, especially as he disliked even the hint of being corrected. Possibly as a result of this, he affected not to care much for CPE's compositions.
