Schon früh zeigten sich seine musikalischen Fähigkeiten und er bekam Violinunterricht bei verschiedenen Lehrern in Dublin und Wexford. Sein erstes Konzert gab er als Neunjähriger im Konzerthaus seiner Heimatstadt. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters im Jahr 1824 verließ Balfe Dublin und wurde in London Mitglied des Drury-Lane-Theatre-Orchesters. Ein Jahr später ging er nach Paris, wo er Cherubini und Rossini traf. If the juxtaposition seems absurd the works were, at least, mid-century and near contemporaneous, Wagner’s dating from 1868 and Balfe’s from 1843. In its day, of course, The Bohemian Girl was the most widely known and successful of all British operas of the nineteenth century and contains much still to admire, but its sub-Weberian aspirations can strike one – they certainly struck me – as more than a little forced and its scenario as more than usually far-fetched.

In 1823 he left Dublin for London and played violin in the Drury Lane Theatre orchestra. In 1824, aged sixteen, he was taken up by an Italian nobleman and sent to Rome to study. Travelling via Paris, he met Cherubini, who later introduced him to Rossini. He studied singing and had a successful operatic career in Italy from 1830 to 1834, then returned to London. He wrote operas there for the rest of his life, his Bohemian Girl (Drury Lane 1843)
