He was educated at Rugby and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied with Charles Wood. He attended the Royal College of Music for a single term before the First World War broke out and interrupted his studies for the duration. After demobilization in 1919, he soon won a reputation as a cosmopolitan and advanced composer. In Madame Noy , the Rhapsody for Two Voices with chamber ensemble, and Rout , he experimented with instrumental uses of the voice, in wordless vocalization and nonsense syllables. In 1921, Bliss became conductor of the Portsmouth Philharmonic Society, two years later moving to California where he continued to conduct. The Introduction and Allegro (1926), dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra and Stokowski, was the first of many works written for virtuoso ensembles or soloists a series that included the Clarinet and Oboe Quintets , the Viola Sonata , and the Piano Violin and Cello Concertos 1930 saw the production, at the Norwich Festival, of one of the most deeply personal of Bliss' works, the choral symphony

Born in 1891 of an English father and American mother, Arthur Bliss was destined to display characteristics of both nations, his profound romanticism balanced by an unquenchable energy and optimism. After studying at the Royal College of Music under Stanford , he served as an infantry officer in the First World War. With the return of peace , Bliss’ career took off rapidly as a composer of what were, for British audiences, startlingly new pieces often for unusual ensembles, such as a concerto for wordless tenor voice, piano and strings, and ‘Rout’ for soprano and chamber orchestra, in which the voice sings phonetic sounds rather than words. Much of his early music shows the influence of Stravinsky and Debussy . A landmark was his ‘Colour Symphony’ of 1922 which explores the idea of the musical associations of different colours.

    Extractions: The one-step was a dance which became popular around 1910, later developing into the Bunny Hug, the Turkey Trot and the Rag. Bliss’ dance, entitled with his own name, is dedicated to Corelli Windeat and his London Dance Orchestra and was for a Punch and Judy Ball at the Savoy Hotel. In The Star of January 27, 1923, Bliss tells how he came to write the piece: “I have been chaffed so much about my name that I’m calling it Bliss. My friends tell me that I was prophetically hinted at by Wordsworth in his immortal line ‘Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive’. I think musicians should be able to write any kind of music – opera, oratorio, chamber, songs, or even ragtime.”

Perhaps that contributed to his self-confidence and optimistic outlook - and pioneering spirit. He is remembered now chiefly for his film score for the 1936 production 'Things to Come', which established the soundtrack as a serious genre; his unusual 'Colour Symphony' of 1922 (each movement expressing the essence of a different colour) is worth a listen. His finest work is arguably 'Morning Heroes', a choral symphony of 1930, though his ballets 'Checkmate', 'Miracle in the Gorbals' and 'Adam Zero' (1937-46) are all highly regarded.
