Extractions: (Deutsche Grammophon) Nadia Boulanger has to be counted among the most influential teachers of the 20th century. Walter Piston, Lennox Berkeley and Aaron Copland studied with her and so did John Eliot Gardiner, to whom Nadia showed scores by her little sister Lili, who died tragically young after the most promising start imaginable as a composer. The first Psalm-settings are brilliant despite their brevity, the Buddhist Prayer is very beautiful, building to an enormously impressive climax, and the longest work

Extractions: Composers Biography Languages Lili Boulanger Life Photo Gallery Home Page Lili Boulanger Life Lili Boulanger was born in France on 21 August, 1893. She began her music studies very early, and one of the highlights of her life was being able to sing songs by Gabriel Fauré , with that elder composer himself at the piano. She began taking lessons in various aspects of music from Fauré, Caussade, Vidal, and her own sister Nadia Boulanger Lili Boulanger made a noted place in music history by being the first woman to win the Prix de Rome; it was in 1913, and her piece was her cantata "Faust et Hélène". At the age of fifteen, she wrote one of her more popular works, a nocturne for violin and piano, and in June of 1914 she wrote her Thème et Variations for piano. Boulanger seemed to realise that her life would be very short, and her music is almost always gripped by a grey, grave quality. What are usually considered her most important works came in the years 1916 and 1917: Psaume XXIV (1916), Psaume CXXIX (1916), Psaume CXXX (1916), and Veille prière bouddhique (1917). Too sick to write, she dictated her final work to her sister, Nadis, a Pie Jesu, during the first weeks of 1918.

Extractions: Nadia Boulanger's life was one lived surrounded by composers. Arguably, the most crucial composer in her life was her younger sister Lili, with whom her relationship was fraught with guilt, envy, and love. Six years older than Lili and a tireless worker who demanded perfection from herself, Nadia watched her younger sister excel in music more easily than she had. Where Nadia had a cold demeanor and put people off, Lili had an easy grace and more feminine air, and when Lili became, at age nineteen, the first woman composer to win France's distinguished Prix de Rome for composition, she attracted national press attention in a way that Nadia never would. In her brief life, Lili Boulanger wrote more than fifty works, ranging from choral pieces such as Pie Jesu (played at her funeral) and the grand Du Fond de l'Abime to a number of brief chamber pieces popular today. D'un Soir Triste Of a Sad Evening ) and D'un matin de Printemps (Of a Spring Morning ), traditionally paired together, are orchestral versions of such chamber works, the first also existing in a version for cello and piano, the latter originally a sprightly duet for flute and piano. That they belong together is obvious from the opening motives, which though contrasting in speed are nearly identical in melody, beginning with a dotted-note motive E-G-E-D-E. The Sad Evening is worked out in bittersweet harmonies with Debussyan parallelisms, the
Extractions: Lili's brief setting of Psaume 24 D'un soir triste written in the last year of her life (Lili died at the tragically early age of 24) and one cannot help thinking that her feelings were channelled into this deeply felt work. It is a struggle from darkness towards light with music that seems to collapse under its own despairing weight. A muted tam-tam crash and huge bass drum figures point spectral fingers towards a funeral march with off-beat colouring on harp and percussion. This music is really nightmarish and ghoulish; but, quite suddenly and strangely, the music seems to transform itself from the personal to a wider significance for the music seems to suggest that we are a spectator on the Via Dolorosa. The companion piece to D'un soir triste is D'un matin de printemps
Extractions: The early death of Lily Boulanger at the age of 25 robbed music of one of the best talents of the earlier 20th century. Just as music lovers think of the great Schubert (who died at 31) as one who achieved miracles of creative work, so too Boulanger touches anyone who knows her work. This admirable collection of songs and piano music does great credit to everyone involved: the artists, the recording engineers, the producer, the booklet editor. Three of these songs are charming pieces on the smaller scale, but the last of them is more substantial. Dans l'immense tristesse (TRACK 20: 0.00) is a substantial work of nearly five minutes' duration, and the challenge of performing it goes way beyond simply singing the notes. There has to be an altogether closer exploration of the relationship between the text and the music, and of the larger issues of phrase and structure. Clearly careful preparation and rehearsal, and the need for true teamwork, are uppermost here. Given the precedents found elsewhere in these performances, both singer and accompanist rise to the challenge of this fine song.
