    Extractions: History of Electronic Music Wendy Carlos "Two Part Invention in F Major" from Switched On Bach 840 KB WAV format mono 8 bit Wendy Carlos took her M.A. in music composition at Columbia University, with pioneers Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky at the first electronic music center in the United States. Carlos became a recording engineer in Manhattan, and made friends with Robert Moog, becoming one of his first clients. The hit recording, Switched-On Bach, realised in 1968, was the first classical album to go Platinum and propelled the Moog synthesizer into the public consciousness. After refining her techniques in The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, Carlos introduced the use of vocoders for synthesized singing in her score for Kubrick's film, A Clockwork Orange, long before space war movies made synthetic voices common. Her haunting Sonic Seasonings predated the now popular environmental-ambience forms of New Age music by over a decade. Shortly after writing horror music for Kubrick's The Shining, Wendy Carlos composed the score for Disney's Tron, which established a continuous blend between symphonic orchestra and digital and analog synthesizers, an often imitated combination. The Digital Moonscapes followed in 1984, introducing the "LSI Philharmonic Orchestra", a digital replica of orchestral timbres virtually indistinguishable from their acoustic instrumental counterparts.     Extractions: I was one of the few artists to have worked more than once with him. The experience and memories are indelibly etched on my brain. The face-to-face meetings for spotting music to compose for " A Clockwork Orange " and " The Shining " couldn't have lasted very much more than a week or two each for me and my then partner and producer, Rachel (it would be unfair to Rachel to characterize her impressions here, and so these are only my observations, although she was present and worked with me throughout the details that follow.) Since my none-too-portable studio was located in New York, and Kubrick didn't travel, the rest of the collaboration took place via long phone calls and messages, express packages of cassettes, tapes, film and video footage, and written memos and notes. If faxing had been more available, and the Web had existed back then, it's certain we'd have used these media to communicate in great detail, too! Stanley Kubrick was not an easy man to work for. He was vastly interesting, completely open about all his "secrets", and had a dry sense of humor. You were always stimulated working with him. But it was seldom painless. Not much has not been said about Wendy's music these past thirty plus years since the release of the ground breaking Switched On Bach in the sixties, the album which single handedly kick started an age of electronically created music, but it is important to note that Wendy is the first to acknowledge that those early electronic instruments weren't the most subtle or flexible tools with which to make music, but combine the sounds produced by all those voltage controlled filters, low frequency oscillators and voltage controlled amplifiers and you come much closer to creating something with actual warmth and, heaven forbid, feeling. Thankfully Digital Moonscapes is anything but an attempt to faithfully reproduce the sound of an orchestra, with just enough of an electronic edge throughout to make the most technocidal of you click your repeat buttons.

So, when CBS called to invite me to get involved with Al Yankovic and them in a gentle leg pulling satire of Peter And The Wolf, I couldn't resist. For me the project was a chance for some musical fun and tomfoolery, working with a bright, witty collaborator, before getting back to more adventurous tuning and timbre projects.
