Extractions: Kaunas lies on the crossroads of the main Lithuanian motorways. Two of them cross the city - Via Baltica, which connects Helsinki and Warsaw, and the highway that connects the capital Vilnius and the port Klaipeda. It is beautifully located at the confluence of two rivers - the Nemunas and the Neris. Kaunas is the second biggest city in Lithuania with the total area of 155.5 sq. km and a population of 433.000. There are not many cities in Eastern Europe that have such a beautiful surroundings as Kaunas. Here two great winding rivers "embrace each other"; seven deep valleys with steep ravines and high hills and banks of the rivers with lovely parks of oak-trees, lime-trees, birches and pines add immense charm to the city. Built in the 13th century, the castle was Lithuania's first defensive bastion and the only double-walled castle in all of Lithuania. The surrounding walls were initially over 2m wide and 13m high. In 1362, however, after a three-week long siege, the crusaders destroyed it. By 1368 a second, stronger castle had been constructed. The castle originally had four towers, but over the centuries the river Neris has washed the towers away and the northern walls have collapsed.

Extractions: The 38th Annual Conference of the Royal Musical Association Glasgow, 28 November - 1 December 2002 Demons, trolls and spectres of the past Chair: Dame Janet Ritterman (Royal College of Music, UK) The Demonic in the Music of Franz Liszt Derek Scott (Salford University, UK) I contend that the primary demonic technique for Liszt is that of negation: negation of the beautiful, the noble, the graceful, and so forth. The secondary technique is parody, though qualities are often negated and parodied or mocked) at the same time. There is a sense that the demonic is not just evil, but gleefully evil. I will discuss Liszt's strategies in the context of ideas of the demonic in the work of Goethe and Kierkegaard. A Present from the Past: Genre and Tonal Language in Selected Early Piano Works of Claude Debussy. Greg Marion (USA). Conspicuous among the titles of Debussy's works is reference to genres associated with earlier eras-one need but think, in this regard, of the Préludes, providing a bifurcated nod to a shared Baroque / Romantic heritage. In fact, even the most cursory appraisal of Debussy's complete work-list communicates the frequency with which the past made its way into his present via the evocation of genre. The paper scrutinizes the interdependence of genre and tonality in selected early piano works by Debussy, for naming-when not merely capricious-renders commentary on the anticipated aural landscape of a piece. Granted, this is tricky ground, for Debussy's voice often echoes louder the more he departs from canonical notions about sarabandes, toccatas, and the like. Additionally, many of these same works, while rich in common-practice tonal leanings, exhibit deliberate breaks with that tradition. By identifying and focusing on the breaks themselves, I will reveal something of the 'play' inherent in Debussy's cycling among procedures associated with disparate historical periods.

Vol 2

Extractions: Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis was born on September 10 (22), 1875, at Varena, a small town in the picturesque region of South Lithuania called Dzukija. His father, an organist, later moved to Druskininkai, a spa on the Nemunas. In his childhood he learnt music at home, later studied at the Duke M.Oginski's school of music in Plunge, then at the Warsaw and Leipzig Conservatoires. A formed composer, Ciurlionis took up art studies and attended the Warsaw School of Arts. He was among those who initiated the first Lithuanian art exhibitions in Vilnius (from 1907 on). Later he lived in St.Petersburg, where he mixed closely with the group of Russian painters known as the World of Art and participated in exhibitions. Strenous work, the life in need undermined his health, and on March 28 (April 10), 1911, Ciurlionis died at the age of 36. The heritage of Ciurlionis includes about 300 paintings and a pack of musical compositions. This huge, highly original wealth of art is an invaluable contribution to the treasury of Lithuanian culture. Both in painting and music, Ciurlionis is rightly regarded as a pioneer and initiator of new manifestations, herald of new horizons. He towers in the Lithuanian art as a bright, lofty summit, opening up wonderful vistas. Uncomprehended and unappreciated by contemporaries, the creation of Ciurlionis has aroused wide public interest and respect in our days and carefully protected by the state. The heritage of Ciurlionis is an object of interest for people of various nations. The fame of the great Lithuanian artist is spreading in the world, his works becoming a revelation to thousands which enriches people spiritually, moves and fascinates them.
