Extractions: Aaron Copland is arguably the most important American classical composer. There's some argument about who had more influence on classical music in America, Copland of Gershwin. Well, Gershwin ruled the broadway stage, but Copland ruled the concert stage and ballet world, much like his Russian counterpart Igor Stravinsky. However, where Stravinsky's music was on the heavier side, Copland's was wonderfully joyous without sacrificing any of the rhythmic vitality that draws us to Stravinsky. If we're to compare them as night and day, Copland would be the sunny one. Candide overture; Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; Symphonic Suite from On The Waterfront; Fancy Free ballet: This disc contains the essential Copland. Everyone must start here. You will recognize the fourth and final movement of Rodeo from the Beef: It's What's For Dinner commercials. You will also doubtless recognize Fanfare For The Common Man from various places. You may also recognize all of these works from their having been used as the score to Spike Lee's great basketball film starring Denzel Washington called He Got Game . The New York Philharmonic are brilliant here and so is Bernstein. (Bernstein was a better conductor of Copland's music than Copland himself. Similarly, Stravinsky was not as capable of conducting his own music as some other conductors were and are.) This is an incredible value.

Copland was a pupil of Rubin Goldmark and of Nadia Boulanger, who introduced his work to the United States when she conducted his Symphony for Organ and Orchestra in 1925. Although his earliest works show European influences, the American character of the greater part of his compositions is evident in his use of jazz and of American folk tunes, as in the short piece for chamber orchestra, John Henry (1940). Copland's many ballets include Billy the Kid Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944). He composed music for the films Of Mice and Men Our Town The Red Pony (1948), and The Heiress (1949). His major orchestral works are El Salon Mexico (1936) and the Third Symphony (1946). Copland wrote a song cycle, 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson, and a quartet for piano and strings (both 1950), Canticle of Freedom for chorus and orchestra (1955), and a tone poem

Although his older brother and sister had been given music lessons, Coplands family did not have a great proclivity towards music. In fact, Coplands parents initially denied him music lessons as they felt that their older children had not benefited from the study of instruments. Thus, Copland began studying the piano at the late age of fourteen. His sister introduced him to the piano, and Copland soon surpassed her skills. He studied on his own for a year and a half, and then beseeched his parents to hire a music teacher. After studying with a local teacher, Copland made arrangements to take a course in harmony from Rubin Goldmark, a renowned theoretician. Around the age of sixteen, he had begun to develop a great interest in composition.
