    Extractions: Henry Cowell Nature Center Renovation The goal of the renovation is to create innovative and interactive exhibits to be placed in the existing visitor center while maintaining the rustic appeal of the building, located in a serene redwood forest at the beginning of the Redwood Grove Trail. On this ADA accessible path, park visitors enjoy impressive old growth redwoods. Volunteer docents staff the Center to greet visitors and answer questions about the park's natural and cultural resources. Staff and docents also conduct guided walks of the redwood loop and other trails in the park. While the redwood trees are the focal point of the park near the visitor center, through the new exhibits, visitors will realize not only the unique qualities of these magnificent giants, but also that redwoods are and have always been a catalyst to protecting themselves and the other cultural and natural features of the park. Due to preservation efforts for the redwood forest, the nearby San Lorenzo River has been protected. Additionally, the other ecosystems of the park have enjoyed an oasis from the encroaching urban community surrounding the park. The remodeled nature center will help visitors understand the role these trees play in preserving all of the park's precious resources.

He experimented with new musical resources; in his piano compositions he introduced the tone cluster, played with the arm or the fist, and wrote compositions to be played directly on the strings of the piano. Cowell founded (1927) New Music Edition, Hymns and Fuguing Tunes (1941-45). He also wrote symphonies, piano pieces, band music, and vocal and chamber music, and edited American Composers on American Music (1933). In the late 1950s he and his wife, an ethnomusicologist, traveled throughout the Middle East, India, and Japan collecting musical materials, which were incorporated into his later compositions. See his New Musical Resources (1930, repr. 1969).

    Extractions: From Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County, exit Mt. Hermon Road. Drive northwest on Mt. Hermon Road through Scotts Valley to the end of the road in Felton (about 3.5 miles). Turn right onto Graham Hill Road, get into the left lane, and turn left onto Highway 9. Drive about 0.5 mile south on Highway 9, then turn left into the signed park entrance road. Drive about 0.5 mile to the entrance kiosk, then continue straight 0.1 mile to the main parking lot, at the end of the road. $5 entrance fee. $2 for a park map. Lots of parking in a paved lot. Some free parking on the side of Highway 9 near the park entrance but it's about 0.5 mile from there to the trailhead. Drinking water and restrooms at the edge of the parking lot. There are designated handicapped parking spots, and Redwood Grove Loop Trail is wheelchair accessible. Metro bus #31 stops at the campground entrance, and #35 services Felton, but no bus stops at the park entrance. Restaurants, stores, and gas in Felton. The park has a complicated set of rules, but following them is easy, since they're posted on the map and on trail signs throughout the park. Some trails (fire roads) are multi-use, others are open to hikers and equestrians, and a few are hiking only. Dogs are permitted on leash only, on three trails (Pipeline Road, Meadow Trail, and Graham Hill Trail). For day use, the park is open during daylight hours only (generally dawn to dusk).

    Extractions: It’s easy to get to. Located less than a mile south of Felton on Highway 9, the park is about half an hour away. And there is no mountain driving on curvy, narrow roads. You may see some friends, too. Mountain neighbor Pat Rapp is a gatekeeper at the entry kiosk. And one of my favorite environmental activists, Carol Carson, is a docent. You can do as much or as little as you want. Close to the parking lot is the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. Wheelchair and stroller accessible, this 8/10 of a mile trail is flat, shaded and cool. Displaying the park’s oldest and tallest trees, it is the perfect trail to show out-of-state guests, small children or other reluctant walkers. A large meadow and wooded sites along the San Lorenzo River serve picnickers and large groups. Short trails connect these areas with the gift store, redwood grove and nature center. You can also walk across the parking area to the Roaring Camp Railroad station where you can board a train for a trip through the redwoods.

    Extractions: Brenda, Jean, Jenny, Howard, Tom, and I went to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park for a hike amongst the redwoods on a warm summer day. After negotiating the winding Santa Cruz mountain roads, we found ourselves at the huge Henry Cowell parking lot at about 11:30am. I stopped in the gift shop to get a park map for $2 and then off we went. We started our journey on Redwood Grove Loop Trail, a short, paved nature trail with signposts to accompany a 25 cent brochure (which I hadn't purchased from the gift shop). Redwoods toward 50 feet and more above us. There was a typical display with a cross-section of a tree so you could count the rings of one of the felled redwoods. The loop is lined with wooden litter boxes, and at the far end is a bathroom. After that, the pavement ends...for a short while. We crossed the Pipeline Road, which is paved, to reach the River Trail, which runs right next to the Pipeline Road. We soon found that we'd be sharing the trail with horses. We stepped to the side of the trail to let 5 or 6 horses pass us in the opposite direction. Signs of horses were present throughout our hike, and we ran into horses frequently perhaps 20 or 30 horses during the day.
