He is also known for his virtuoso performances both as a solo pianist and as the leader of the ensemble Episteme, a unique ensemble of musicians who are disciplined interpreters as well as provocative improvisers. In April 1993, Davis made his Broadway debut, composing the music for Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Angels in America: Millennium Approaches , directed by George C. Wolfe. His music is also heard in Kushner's companion piece, Perestroika , which opened on Broadway in November 1993. As a composer, Davis is best known for his operas. X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X , which played to sold-out houses at its premiere at the New York City Opera in 1986, was the first of a new American genre: opera on a contemporary political subject. The recording of X was released on the Gramavision label in August 1992 and received a Grammy Nomination for "Best Contemporary Classical Composition" in February 1993. Active in a variety of media, including operatic, symphonic, choral, chamber, dance, theater, and improvised musics, Davis has focused upon the integration of improvised and notated expressive resources. His work embodies an intercultural approach, drawing not only upon traditional and current African-American sources, but upon the Javanese gamelan, American Minimalism, and the European and Euro-American avant-garde. His fourth and most recent opera, AMISTAD, based on the slave ship uprising of 1839 and the subsequent trial, premiered at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in November of 1997, with libretto by Thulani Davis and direction by New York Public Theater artistic director George C. Wolfe. His first and best-known opera, X: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOLM X, with libretto by Thulani Davis, premiered at the New York City Opera in 1986. A graduate of Yale University in 1975 with a BA in Music, Davis taught in music and Afro-American Studies at Yale from 1981-1982 and was a visiting composer at the Yale School of Music in 1990, 1993 and 1996. In 1987 he was a senior fellow at Cornell University's Society for the Humanities, and from 1992 to 1996 he was a visiting lecturer in Afro-American Studies at Harvard University. In 1995, Davis was a composer-in-residence with both the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

    Extractions: A t the time pianist Anthony Davis and I met to record this interview, which was the Fall of 1982, he had just completed a recording with flautist James Newton and cellist Abdul Wadud. That recording was soon to be released under the title of "I've Known Rivers". His previous recording, "Episteme", featured a somewhat larger group that included among others drummer Pheeroan akLaff who did an amazing job of pulling together all of the various polyrhythyms and overlaying time signatures with their shifting patterns of downbeats that Anthony was using in his compositions. He explained to me how this music was influenced by the "Balinese Shadow Puppet Theater" which utilized the music of the gamelan with roots in Bali and Java. His intention was more to transfer it to the Afro-American idiom with no direct attempt to copy it per se. The music was exciting and full of movement, yet it defied categorization:

    Extractions: Anthony Davis has always despised labels. Perhaps that is because the sources of his music are so numerous that any attempt at categorization would be bound to fail. Without a trace of self-consciousness, Davis has synthesized the European classical heritage, the African-American tradition, the contemporary avant garde, and elements of non-Western music. To him, the distinctions between these styles are as arbitrary as they are irrelevant. "Only one music comes out of me," he says. Yet in American society, which is so obsessed with asserting cultural hierarchies, Davis's synthesis comes at a price. As a jazz pianist who has embraced notated composition and the complexities of the avant garde, he has been considered too Eurocentric by jazz traditionalists. And as a composer of concert music, he has been viewed with some suspicion by the classical music world, as if he were tainted by his background in jazz. Davis, for his part, relishes this outsider status. "I always tried so hard to fit in, and then I figured out that I didn't want to fit," he said in 1992. "I knew I could never be accepted as a straight-ahead jazz musician, nor would I accept myself as that. I would never be accepted as a minimalist. I wouldn't be a downtown composer. Because I find all orthodoxies, all doctrines to be ultimately banal."
