Extractions: ca. 1400 - 27/11/1474) U hoort nu van Guillaume Dufay: Supremum est mortalibus bonum Dufay was de belangrijkste figuur uit de eerste generatie der "Nederlandse polyfonisten". Hij was afkomstig uit Cambrai (Kamerrijk) in Frans-Henegouwen, waar hij omstreeks 1400 moet geboren zijn. Zijn naam zou een verre verbastering zijn van "de Illo fageto" (= van het beukenbos). De uitspraak in drie lettergrepen (du - fa - ie) kennen we toevallig omdat hij zijn naam vermeldt in het chanson "Ce moy de may" met twee even hoge korte nootjes op de slotlettergreep. De naam van Guillaume Dufay duikt voor het eerst in de archieven op als koorknaap van de kapittelkerk te Cambrai. Hij wordt er kapelaan, en hij werd waarschijnlijk door aartsbisschop Pierre d'Ailly meegenomen naar het Concilie van Konstanz. Daar moet hij opgemerkt zijn door Italiaanse vorsten, want kort daarna vinden we hem terug aan de kapel van de familie Malatesta te Rimini. Hij studeert rechten te Turijn en keert terug naar de Nederlanden voor zijn priesterwijding. Hij krijgt een belangrijke prebende (de inkomsten uit een soort kerkelijke belasting uit een bisdom) toegewezen in zijn eigen geboortestreek en behaalt een titel aan de Parijse universiteit. Daarna duikt hij weer op in Italië als zanger van de pauselijke kapel, en tussendoor moet hij ook enkele jaren gewerkt hebben aan het hof van Savoie. Hij was natuurlijk ook opgenomen als kanunnik in het kapittel van Cambrai, maar net als zijn andere titels en prebenden ging het hier om een soort eretitel, die wel een bron van inkomsten was, maar verder geen verplichtingen met zich bracht.

Lejos de ser un reformador, Dufay utilizó con una maestría sin par los recursos musicales de su época, elevando el nivel, sobre todo melódico, de la música de su tiempo. Tuvo la sabiduría de unir los elementos musicales franceses, ingleses e italianos, creando la síntesis entre el estilo tardo medieval francés y el protorenacentista italiano.

After his early training in the cathedral choir at Cambrai, he sang in the papal chapel in Rome (1428-33) and later in Florence and Bologna (1435-37). He was in the service of the antipope Felix V for seven years and was a canon of the cathedral of Cambrai, where he lived from 1445 until his death. He traveled a great deal, knew many musical styles, and was highly esteemed by his contemporaries. His music is in the northern French tradition, but contains some Italian and English elements. He composed three-part chansons, masses, and motets. See studies by Hamm (1964) and Fallows (1982).

Extractions: (ca. 1400-1474) faux-bourdon , a way of singing improvised polyphony , or plainsong melody in the treble voice that is accented by two lower parts. Secular aspects that gradually became part of the Renaissance and beyond influenced Dufay, his compositions consequently mixing worldly features with music for the church. For instance, he was the first composer to use secular tunes as a main part of the Mass. Primarily associated with the "Burgundian school," Guillaume Dufay is placed in a category with Renaissance composers Josquin Desprez (ca. 1440-1521) and Johannes Ockeghem (ca. 1410-1497). Financially supported by two musical promoters, these musicians had assistance from Duke Philip the Good and Duke Philip the Bold. Under their sponsorship, composers wrote many prominent Renaissance works still known today: Masses, Magnificats motets , and secular chansons with French texts. Three of these genres were used in the church, and the chanson was a vocal piece based on courtly love poetry. Dufay wrote seven complete Masses and 28 single Mass movements, in addition to 70 French chansons and some songs based on Italian texts. Most of these were for three voices, some for four. It was once said of Dufay’s chansons that "their lyrical qualities, refinement, and delicacy make them an appropriate reflection of the Burgundian civilization that produced them" (Brown 28). As a young priest and chorister he lived in Italy and France, and during most of the years 1428-37 he was a singer in the papal chapel in Rome. In 1536 he was made canon of the Cathedral of Cambrai, but 18 years at the courts of Savoy and Burgundy elapsed before he made Cambrai his permanent residence and a renowned center for music. Dufay was one of the early masters of counterpoint, especially four-part music, and was influential in establishing the smooth harmonic idiom of Renaissance writing. Among his compositions are magnificats, masses, motets, and songs.

It is thought he worked in Italy from before 1420 until 1426, then returned to Cambrai and held two benefices in the Laon diocese. From 1428 to 1433 he was a singer in the papal choir, and from then on became one of the most famous musicians in Europe, holding many posts, benefices and connections with several courts, though always keeping residence in Cambrai. During the 1450s he spent seven years in Savoy, his name occurs in the archives of Turin and Besancon. He was friend and host to some of the greatest musicians and churchmen of the day.
