Extractions: TAN DUN China's Musical Eclectic by S-C Cheng T an Dun has been hailed by The Telegraph as "possibly the foremost contemporary composer to have emerged from China in the past two decades." On July 1, 1997 Tan conducted a major five-day event that marked Hong Kong's break from British colonial rule and highlighted the political event with his newly commissioned Symphony 1997 Born in Hunan province in 1957, Tan spent his teen years working as an arranger and fiddle-player in the Peking Opera troupe. At the age of 19, he heard Beethoven's Fifth Symphony for the first time and aspired to be a composer. One year later, Tan was selected for the Central Conservatory in Beijing, where he studied with Li Ying Hai and Zhao Xin Dao. In 1986 he began his fellowship at Columbia University, where he completed the doctoral program in music composition. Since then, he has lived in New York. Structurally, Symphony 1997 exposes Tans integration of Eastern and Western musical elements throughout the work. While composing intermediate and transitional material to collage, or link, historic musical "samples" in a large A-B-A three-part form for the symphony, Tan incorporates referential and symbolic music to recall the past and the present interchangeably. Furthermore, Tan realizes this method via extracting examples of both Western and Chinese melodies, i.e. the Great Wall Oratorio sounding behind a foreground of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" from the Chorale Movement of the

Born in the Hunan province of China, Tan planted rice for two years during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s, then worked in a Beijing opera troupe. Inspired by a live performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, he found his way to the Beijing Conservatory to study composition, and from there to Columbia University for doctoral studies in music. While his base of operations remains New York, the multicultural nature of Tan's work makes for a literally global exposure. The streth of its receiption has earned him exclusive contractual arrangements with Sony Classical for his recordings and G. Schirmer for his music publications. His opera Marco Polo, premiered in Munich in 1996, was thought in many circles the high point of that season. Works Orchestra

Extractions: "What is very little heard in Europe or Western music is the presence of sound as the voice of nature. So that we are led to hear in our music human beings talking only to themselves. It is clear in the music of Tan Dun that sounds are central to the nature in which we live but to which we have not long listened. Tan Dun's music is one we need as the East and the West come together as our one home." Since the release of his opera Marco Polo, Ghost Opera ; his Symphony 1997 was commissioned to mark the political transfer of Hong Kong, and his schedule is reportedly well-booked through to the year 2005. But a common complaint about his recorded works has been that they lose something in translation Ghost Opera, Marco Polo, and Symphony 1997 are highly conceptual and very theatrical, and though they make for some exciting and thought-provoking listening, one can't help escape the feeling that a certain visual element is missing; that actually witnessing the performance would add so much more. But with the Ondine release of

Tan Dun - Biography (1957 ), Si Mao, China. Picture, biography, discography and tour schedule. http://www.sonyclassical.com/artists/dun/bio.html
Extractions: With cellist Yo-Yo Ma as soloist, the music has the sweep of a romantic film score while reflecting the action and atmosphere of the film through the mesmerizing, often delicate sounds of traditional Chinese music. Composer, conductor and winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for music composition, Tan Dun began his career in his native China in the Peking Opera after planting rice for two years during the Cultural Revolution. A graduate of Beijing's Central Conservatory and Columbia University in New York, his music reaches large audiences throughout the world in performances by leading orchestras and ensembles. Tan Dun, an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist, has created world-premiere recordings of his opera Marco Polo ( ) and Symphony 1997 (Heaven Earth Mankind), a large choral-orchestral work written to commemorate the occasion of the return of Hong Kong to China ( SK 63368 A tale of intrigue, love, violence and betrayal set in 19th-century China during the Ching dynasty, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon stars Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh and won rave reviews in its world premiere in a special out-of-competition screening at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. The Sony Classical soundtrack recording of the films score includes the end-title song "A Love Before Time" sung by Asian pop star CoCo Lee for which Tan Dun and Jorge Calandrelli created the music based on themes from the score (incorporating Yo-Yo Mas cello solos), and lyrics by the film's producer, James Schamus. The international release of both the film and the soundtrack recording will follow beginning in the fall of 2000.
Extractions: Widely considered to be the foremost contemporary Chinese composer, Tan Dun successfully combines elements of Chinese traditional music with contemporary Western compositional techniques. Born in a rural district of China's Hunan Province in 1957, Tan Dun was strongly affected by that region's folk traditions. After a period of compulsory labor during the Cultural Revolution, followed by a stint playing erhu (two-stringed fiddle) in a local Peking Opera troupe, Tan Dun enrolled at Beijing's prestigious Central Conservatory. By 1983 his striking compositions had earned him awards in competitions both at home and abroad. In 1986 Tan Dun went to New York for further studies at Columbia University, and he continues to live there today. Tan Dun's work is marked by a fascination with tone color for its own sake. His instrumental pallette includes both traditional Chinese and Western instruments, frequently combined to intriguing effect. His spacious arrangements and use of silence suggest the sounds of nature and the Taoist and Ch'an (Zen) Buddhist philosophies of his native China, and his work exhibits a distinctly shamanistic ritual quality inspired by the folk practices he encountered as a youth. The selection here is an excerpt from " Nine Songs ," a cycle of works based on a collection of poems of the same name by the revered poet Qu Yuan (370-277 B.C.). Tan Dun's musical settings explore several unique aspects of traditional Chinese music: the tonal character of the Chinese language; the declamatory style of Chinese opera; and the organization of instrumental sound groups according to material: skin (drums), wood, bamboo, silk (strings), metal, and ceramic, in addition to voice.
