Extractions: photo Perhaps no more authentic world composer exists today than Tan Dun. For he grew up planting rice in China; lives now amidst the noisy diversity of downtown Manhattan; and constantly travels the world, eagerly absorbing its cultures, as part of a career that has placed him at the center of the international music scene. Tan Dun experiences music as possibility, and sees it as his right and mission to share his experience of shamanistic ritual as well as that of the culture of high-technology with his audiences. The music of today, according to Tan Dun, is not about avant-garde or traditional, nor about East or West, nor about simplicity or complexity; it is a path towards reconciliation of his own personal past and present, and a quest for human roots. It is music for and about people. At the Oregon Bach Festival on July 5, Tan will conduct the American Premiere of his Water Passion After St. Matthew for water instruments orchestra, string, vocal, and percussion soloists, and choir, commissioned by Helmuth Rilling and the Internationale Bachakadamie Stuttgart, for the Passion 2000 project, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Bach's death. On July 7, he conducts his Crouching Tiger Concerto , adapted from his Academy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated sound track to the Ang Lee film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Tan Dun Tan Dun's music is a vital expression of independence from the weight of Chinese history, and of self-assurance amid contemporary turmoil...Every part of Tan Dun's music is violent as a burst of human blood, yet full of grace, a voice of the soul. I believe he is one of the most outstanding composer's today. Toru Takemitsu Born in 1957 in Si Mao, a remote, rural village in the central Hunan province in China, composer/conductor Tan Dun spent his formative years listening to the native folksongs and ritual music of his region. During his youth, Tan learned music largely on his own and had little contact with outside musical influences. The music of his childhood made a deep impression on Tan, and continues greatly to influence his compositions today. Many of Tan's school years were spent during the repressive regime of Mao's Cultural Revolution. He planted rice for two years as part of his compulsory labor and then worked as an er-hu player and arranger for a provincial Beijing Opera troupe. During his stint with the opera company, Tan was exposed to his first Western classical workBeethoven's Fifth Symphony an eye-opening experience which introduced Tan to a whole realm of new sonic possibilities. He began to imagine the possibility of becoming a composer but it was not until after the Cultural Revolution that Tan had his first, formal musical training.
