    Extractions: for the pianoforte are now forgotten. Neither do his quartets for strings and pianoforte hold their own by the side of those of the great masters. But his “nocturnes,” a form of music highly developed if not actually created by him, remain all but unrivalled for their tenderness and dreaminess of conception, combined with a continuous flow of beautiful melody. They were indeed Chopin’s models. Field’s execution on the pianoforte was nearly allied to the nature of his compositions, beauty and poetical charm of touch being one of the chief characteristics of his style. Moscheles, who heard Field in 1831, speaks of his “enchanting legato, his tenderness and elegance and his beautiful touch.” His two plays were reprinted in J. P. Collier’s Five Old Plays (1833), in Hazlitt’s edition of Dodsley’s Old Plays, and in Nero and other Plays (Mermaid series, 1888), with an introduction by Mr A. W. Verity. FIELD, STEPHEN JOHNSON (1816—1899), American jurist, was horn at Haddam, Connecticut, on the 4th of November 1816. He was the brother of David Dudley Field,, Cyrus W.

Zowel zijn vader als grootvader waren goede musici. John werd dus al snel naar Londen gestuurd om pianolessen te volgen. Hij werd als leerjongen aangenomen bij Clementi en Co, waar hij als vertegenwoordiger en verkoper van piano's moest werken. Als tegenprestatie gaf Clementi hem pianolessen. In 1802 nam hij Field zelfs met zich mee naar Rusland, Duitsland en Parijs. In 1803 moest Clementi alleen terugkeren naar Londen, want Field vestigde zich in Sint-Petersburg, van waaruit hij tourneeën ondernam. Gedurende dertig jaar genoot hij van een enorm succes in Sint-Petersburg en Moskou. Hij was er een gewaardeerd virtuoos en pianoleraar. Tussen 1832 en 1835 ging hij regelmatig op tournee naar Londen, Parijs, Milaan, Venetië en Napels. Maar die hadden nefaste gevolgen op de gezondheid van Field, die reeds van nature een zwakke en sombere man was. Ook zijn reputatie als leraar gaat erop achteruit. In Napels wordt hij erg ziek, en na het laatste succes in Wenen keert hij terug naar Moskou, waar hij niet veel later sterft, totaal uitgeput. Belangrijk is het feit dat Field een grote inspiratiebron is geweest voor Chopin . Niet alleen dankzij het uitvinden van een nieuwe vorm, de nocturne (hij schreef er 18 of 19), maar tevens door het creëren van een totaal nieuwe, originele stijl in de pianomuziek. Deze wordt gekenmerkt door het subtiele, gevoelige en dromerige pianospel met zangerige melodieën, die sterk contrasteerde met de bombastische manier van spelen die destijds in de mode was.

    Extractions: FIELD MUSEUM PHOTOS JOHN GURCHE ART LOCATION: Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois DATE OF VISIT: May 2000 This mural of the Tyrannosaurus rex named Sue, portrayed in a lifelike scene, was painted by the popular paleoartist John Gurche. This large mural, which measures a good twenty feet across and several feet high, is painted on a large circular section of wall directly overlooking the finished mount of Sue. Directly below the painting is the original skull of Sue, mounted separately on the second floor of the Field Museum, because of its weight was too great to place it on the original skeletal mount. Near the skull are displays featuring several of Sue's teeth, her wishbone, and her vertebrae, plus movies of her excavation, preparation, and mounting. The original sketches for this mural are part of private collector John Lanzendorf's dinosaur art collection. Several pieces from his collection, most of them involving or portraying Tyrannosaurus rex, were exhibited at the Field for several months during the Spring-Summer of 2000. This exhibit ran concurrently with the unveiling of the finished Sue mount. According to Lanzendorf, the original sketches for this Gurche painting, which were a part of the Field Lanzendorf art exhibit, are the only Gurchees residing in a private collection anywhere around the world. The man that Lanzendorf calls the "most famous man in paleoart" usually only paints on commission for large museums and institutions. For example, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History contains a large Gurche mural, showing Triceratops and other dinosaurs. And, in 1989 Gurche produced a series of four stamps for the United States Postal Service. These stamps depicted Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pteranodon, and a Brachiosaurus.
