Extractions: Organist and composer. Uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli . Almost nothing is known of his life before 1557, when he first tried (unsuccessfully) to become organist at St. Mark's, Venice. A lasting friendship with Lassus began during a trip to Germany in the early 1560s. A pupil of Adrian Willaert , he gained fame as a singer at St. Mark's and later was successful in becoming second organist there after Claudio Merulo . The position of organist at St. Mark's was his from 1566 until his death. His influence in the later 16th century was considerable, especially in Italy but also in Germany. His works are among the first by a native Venetian to escape the dominance of the Netherlandish style. Innovative techniques are found particularly in the ceremonial music composed after he took up his post at St. Mark's. Such music tends to be homophonic, largely syllabic, perhaps polychoral, and above all sonorous. His many compositions, in nearly every genre known at the time, include sacred vocal pieces (Masses, Psalms, motets, concerti); madrigals (eight books and many independent pieces); other secular vocal works of various types; and many instrumental compositions (canzonas, ricercars, intonationi, and toccatas), most for keyboard. Many of his works were first published posthumously, edited by Giovanni Gabrieli. He is remembered also as the teacher of Sweelinck

Extractions: Andrea Gabrieli c.1510-1586 Giovanni Gabrieli c. 1553/6-1612 Although these two related Venetian composers (uncle and nephew) are usually coupled together, each earned his own place in the development of music. Towards the end of the sixteenth century, with the cathedral of St Marks at the hub of its ceremonial and sacred occasions. The Gabrielis were among the first Italians to hold important positions there, following the eminent Franco-Flemish composer Adrian Willaert, who was Maestro di Capella there from 1527. The young Andrea Gabrieli was probably one of Willaert's pupils. Certainly he sang in St Mark's, was organist at the church of San Geremia, and travelled as part of Duke Albrecht's retinue, meeting Lassus in Germany. He became Maestro di Capella at St Mark's in 1555, gaining a reputation as a composer, organist and teacher. He remained there until his death. His madrigals were lighter and more pastoral than those of his peers, and he decorated his themes with rhythmic patterns. He was also responsible for evolving a style of sacred music appropriate to the performing requirements of St Mark's, as well as suited to the Venetian love of pomp, using several choirs cori spezzati, or

Many thanks to Marty Morell for his assistance in updating this record. Gabrieli was probably born in 1532 or 1533. These new dates are based on a recently-discovered register that records Andrea Gabrieli's death on 30 August, 1585 at 'about 52 years of age.' His name appears as 'Andrea da Cannaregio' in documents of the time. Quick Facts Italian Organist and Composer Once thought to have been a chorister at St. Mark's Basilica in 1536. His updated birth and death dates make this unlikely.
