    Extractions: Philip Glass has built an enormous reputation among musicians and audiences alike. He has been writing concert works for a variety of orchestral forces from solo instruments up to orchestras. His style clearly defines him as a "modern" composer and, along with John Cage and others, his work received some attention in the book "Experimental Music" by Michael Nyman . The relationship between the two composers goes deeper than this, because in some ways Glass was a leading light in the minimalist movement which was documented and named by Nyman before he himself became its foremost practitioner. Another curious coincidence (or is it?) is that the director Peter Greenaway created the documentary series "Four American Composers", one of whom was Philip Glass. Greenaway's film music is invariably scored by none other than Michael Nyman. Glass is also noted for his musical embracing of influences beyond the classical world. He has frequently collaborated with other composers and musicians, and through them incorporated ideas and instruments from both pop music and world music. He has worked with David Bowie and Ravi Shankar, and has forged a particularly close relationship with music from India and Tibet. This relationship stems no doubt from his Buddhist faith and support of the oppressed Tibetan people. Glass is part of a team which organises the annual Tibet House Freedom Gig in New York, since China has banned the traditional festival on Tibetan soil.

Those who are ill-attuned to monotony cannot bear this aspect of Glass's scores. Even so, his operas have caught the imagination of a wide public throughout the West. Philip Glass began by selling records in his father's shop in Baltimore, where he was born. When he was only 14, he passed into Chicago University to study mathematics and philosophy. He progressed to more serious study, first with Steve Reich at the Juillard School in New York, then with Darius Milhaud at Aspen. This comprehensive musical education was completed by Nadia Boulanger in Paris, who taught him harmony and counterpoint from 1964-66. Any idea of a conventional music career was shattered when Glass met Ravi Shankar, and transcribed into Western notation one of the sitar-player's film scores. Glass was prompted to explore the entirely different textures of Indian music, travelling to the Himalayas to find out about it at first hand. He next sought out the equally vital music of North Africa. Glass returned to New York in 1967 and, imbued with his newly acquired experience, founded the Philip Glass Ensemble. His first two works, 'Music in Similar Motion' and 'Music in Changing Parts' are scored for a combination of flute, trumpet, saxophone and electronic keyboard. They represent a variation of rock music and are designed to be played at excessive volume.
