Daardoor werd de Duitser Gluck geboren in het Boheemse Ersbach bij Berching op 2 juli 1714. Zijn eerste muzikale opleiding krijgt hij in de jezuïetenschool van Komotau; zo kan hij in zijn eigen levensonderhoud voorzien als hij in 1733 in Praag naar de universiteit gaat: hij knapt er allerlei muzikale klusjes op en volgt daarnaast muzieklessen bij Czanohorsky. In 1736 trekt hij naar Wenen in dienst van vorst Melzi. Die stuurt hem in de leer bij Sammartini in Milaan. Na vier jaar beheerst hij het vak van operacomponist volkomen, en pakt uit met "Artaserse", de eerste van een reeks niet onbelangrijke opera's. De faam die hem die werken bezorgden mondt uit in een uitnodiging om in Londen zijn werk te komen dirigeren. Vanaf 1747 is hij drie jaar lang dirigent van een reizend operagezelschap, en treedt op in Dresden, Wenen en Kopenhagen. In 1750 gaat hij als gevestigd kunstenaar in Wenen wonen. en is van 1754 tot 1754 hofkapelmeester. In die Weense periode werkt hij zijn Italiaanse opera's dramatisch hogerop, door ze te bevrijden uit de starre schematiek van de Napolitaanse opera. Stilaan groeit een nieuw muziekdramatisch ideaal: de omslachtige teksten worden geconcentreerd, en ook de muzikale schema's worden vervangen door innerlijk en motivisch samenhangende vormen. Een tijdlang componeert hij ook een reeks Franse opéras-comiques.

Hijo de Alexander Gluck (1683-1743) y de María Walburga (1692-1740), que no se mostraron inclinados a permitir una carrera musical para su hijo. Este, mostrando una determinación fuera de lo común, abandonó el hogar a los 15 años de edad para estudiar música en Eisenberg Reconciliado con su padre en , se traslada a Praga para proseguir sus estudios musicales. Posiblemente recibió en estas fechas ayuda económica del príncipe Lobkowitz , a cuyo servicio se incorporará en el año . Un año depués se traslada a Milán para entrar al servicio de Antonio Maria Melzi , que disponía de una de las mejores orquestas de la época. Posiblemente en Milán recibió lecciones de G.B. Sammartini , que le introduce en los secretos de la ópera italiana. En consigue estrenar allí su primera ópera, Artaserse , que obtiene el favor del público.
