Biography Highlights for 1998 included a series of Mozart recitals at the City of London Festival, the premiere of haflidi hallgrimsson's percussion quintet with Evelyn http://www.nnfest.demon.co.uk/pages/events/nnfest/biogs/yggdrasil.htm
Extractions: Four young Swedish musicians formed the Yggdrasil Quartet in 1990 after studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and later with the composer Gyorgy Kurtag and with the leader of the late Amadeus Quartet, Norbert Brainin. They rapidly gained an international reputation as prizewinners in both the London International String Quartet Competition and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. In 1995 a 4-year project was created by a unique partnership between the City and University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Arts Council for a quartet to live and perform in Aberdeen for several months each season. The Quartet were selected after intense international competition and immediately created a sensation. Meanwhile the Stockholm Concert Hall chose the Quartet as their country's R,Wng Stars and in spring 1997 they performed in major concert halls throughout Europe. Their first recording on the Swedish BIS label of the quartets of the lcelandic composer Jon Leifs, won the 1996 Cannes MIDEM award for the best chamber music disc, and their recording of the Berwald quartets was shortlisted for a 1997 Gramophone award. Other recordings include the recently reconstructed settings of the original chamber versions of the two Chopin piano concertos and the first disc of a series of the complete Shostakovich quartets (with two more to be recorded later this year).

Extractions: LAST Saturday, West Linton Music Society welcomed back the pianist Peter Evans for a recital in the Graham Institute. The entire first half of the programme was devoted to Schuberts Sonata in A D.959, written in the last months of the composers short life. In the massive opening movement, the soloist stressed the dramatic nature of the music whose mood constantly ranges between dancing elation and deep despair. There was a more relaxed air after the interval, with two autumnal Intermezzi by Brahms and a brief, but sensitive Prelude for the left hand by Scriabin. The present day was represented by the exotic and colourful Homage to Mondrian by Haflidi Hallgrimsson, ending with an invigorating Victory Boogie. Keyboard virtuosity was to the fore in Liszts cheery Fantasy on the themes from Verdis Rigoletto, which concluded an evening of intimate music-making much enjoyed by the audience.

Extractions: ANNELI REMME muusikakriitik Neli tugevat said kokku ühel laval dirigent Eri Klas, Tallinna Kammer-orkester ning viiulisolistid Valentin Îuk ja Andrus Haav. Selle tulemusena sündis kõrge kõlakultuuriga kontsert. Klasi kõnekate käekaarte all vormus Mozarti divertisment ideaalseks klassitsismi-elamuseks nõtke, puhas, tingimusteta ilus muusika, mille kõrvale sobiks valgeid marmorskulptuure vaadata. Dirigeeriv Klas on omaette vaatamisväärsus. Hallgrimssoni ekspressionistlikum poolus on Schnittkele isegi päris lähedane. Hallgrimssoni Poeem on loodud Marc Chagalli kolme töö järgi, kuid loob ka rohkelt seoseid Islandi loodusega. Õhulised helikobarad näivad edasi andvat metsavaese maa, tühjade tuuliste lagendike vaimu.
