Herbert Howells Herbert Howells was born in Lydney, Gloucester on 17 October 1892. At the age of eighteen he became a pupil of Herbert Brewer, Organist of Gloucester Cathedral. In 1912 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied under Charles Villiers Stanford, Walter Parratt, Charles Wood and Hubert Parry. In 1920, after ill-health forced him to relinquish his position as sub-organist of Salisbury Cathedral, Howells returned to the RCM to teach composition, an occupation which was to interest him until the end of his life. Howells also taught at St Paul's Girls' School, Hammersmith, and, in 1950, was appointed King Edward VII Professor of Music at London University. After writing his choral work Hymnus Paradisi, much of it derived from the Requiem for his son who died in infancy, he turned largely to church music with a series of compositions setting Mass texts and Canticles, most notably the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Over twenty settings are known of which the settings for King's College, Cambridge (Collegium Regale), St Paul's and Gloucester Cathedrals are among the finest.     Extractions: Chandos CHAN 9744 DDD 65:10 When Herbert Howells's nine-year-old son Michael suddenly contracted polio and died during a family vacation, the composer was inconsolable, and the only way out for him was through music. He completed the Hymnus Paradisi in 1938, three years after Michael's death, but kept the music under wraps until 1950 because of its intensely personal nature. It was Ralph Vaughan Williams who urged him to share it with the public. Since Howells, George Rochberg and Andrew Imbrie are two other composers who have responded to the death of a son through music (Rochberg literally changed his entire style of composition), but Hymnus Paradisi is unique because it stands at the pinnacle of Howells's work. It is his masterpiece, and its relative neglect is difficult to understand. It may be that its emotions simply are too painful for performers and for listeners. Indeed, hearing this work, it is difficult to tell the difference between pleasure and pain. Howells set the work for orchestra, chorus, and soprano and tenor soloists, so its textures are certainly sumptuous. The texts come from the Requiem Mass, the Psalms, and English ecclesiastical literature. Stylistically, the music is reminiscent of the work of Vaughan Williams (Howells's idol), and echoes of Elgar's oratorios can also be heard. However, Howells's grief inspired him to moments of self-flagellatory glory that are unusual even in the work of his predecessors. The remarkable Sanctus has an almost Slavic intensity.

    Extractions: Internationally recognised as the pre-eminent representative of the great British church music tradition, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, owes its existence to King Henry VI who, in founding the College in 1441, envisaged the daily singing of services in his magnificent chapel (regarded as one of the jewels of Britain's cultural and architectural heritage). This remains the choir’s raison d’être, and is an important part of the lives of its sixteen choristers, who are educated on generous scholarships at the College School, and the fourteen choral scholars and two organ scholars, who study a variety of subjects in the College itself. Today’s choir derives its world-wide fame and reputation from the annual broadcast of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols which is heard on radio by millions all over the world, together with a television version of the service; from its many recordings and from its international touring programme. The Choir of King’s College has been directed by Stephen Cleobury since October 1982 and works with many distinguished soloists and orchestras.
