    Extractions: Howells wrote Penguinski for a visit made to the Royal College of Music on 10 May 1933 by the Prince of Wales, the President of the conservatory. The occasion was used as a showcase for works by a number of contemporary composers including Arthur Benjamin, Lord Berners, Armstrong Gibbs, Gordon Jacob and Constant Lambert. Malcolm Sargent, who was to have conducted Penguinski, was indisposed on the day, his place taken by Lambert. At its first (and probably only) performance it was fully choreographed by Daphne Fox and Katherine Craster and was the second item in the concert. It also featured the solo dancing of Penelope Spencer who, according to The Times critic "was [also] responsible for the arrangement of the dances, for which the music had been composed by various professors and members of the College". Howells's score pays light and affectionate tribute to the huge and popularity of Stravinsky in London from the teens of the twentieth century. London audiences had been completely seduced by Diaghilev's Russian Ballet performances at the Alhambra Theatre and Howells was as great a devotee as any. The influence on him was profound, not so much in terms of writing strings of pieces with pseudo-Russian titles, but in his orchestration.

    Extractions: September 6th 1910 proved to be a watershed in the life of Herbert Howells. Still not yet eighteen, he was then articled pupil to Herbert Brewer at Gloucester Cathedral, where he had developed a keen interest in Tudor music, Gregorian chant and modality. On that fateful day he went with his friend Ivor Gurney to a performance of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius, given as part of the Three Choirs Festival. Neither of them was prepared for the effect of the first work in the programme, a commissioned piece receiving its first performance, and entitled Fantasy on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. Howells was thunderstruck, and has described how he got no sleep that night but paced the streets of Gloucester with Gurney discussing the revelation of a piece that had smitten him. That moment marked not only the start of a lifelong friendship between Vaughan Williams and Howells, but awakened in the younger man an awareness of the expressive possibilities of the string orchestra. The manuscript of this work carries the title "First Suite for String Orchestra": it is in fact nothing of the sort. The first product of Howells' abiding interest in the medium dates from 1917 and is also entitled Suite - a three movement work of great maturity and charm to which he turned for material in at least two other pieces: its second movement was revised as the Elegy for Viola, String Quartet and String Orchestra, and the prelude was reworked and extended into the first movement of his greatest orchestral work, the Concerto for Strings of 1938.

He succeeded Gustav Holst as director of music at St Paul's Girls' School in London and taught composition for many years at the Royal College of Music. As pupil of Stanford and Charles Wood at the Royal College, he wrote music within the prevailing English tradition, showing some affinity with Vaughan Williams in his choral music. Herbert Howells Works The orchestral music of Howells includes two Piano Concertos, a Pastoral Rhapsody and, in 1949, Music for a Prince. The Concerto for Strings of 1939 was followed by a Suite, also for string orchestra. Howells wrote an interesting Phantasy Quartet and a later String Quartet 'In Gloucestershire'. Among other compositions for instrumental ensemble are a Rhapsody Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, sonatas for oboe and for clarinet and piano, and three Violin Sonatas. As an organist by training, Howells added significantly to the repertoire of English organ music, notably in two Organ Sonatas, four organ Rhapsodies and sets of Psalm Preludes. Hymnus Paradisi written in 1938, a Requiem for the composer's son, was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival in the West of England in 1950, when it won considerable success.
