Extractions: Three new concertos for cello and orchestra by American composers Richard Danielpour , Leon Kirchner and Christopher Rouse receive their world premiere recordings on Sony Classical's Premieres (SK 66299) , featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma The four-movement Concerto for Cello and Orchestra "The Harvard connection" yielded the commission for the single-movement Music for Cello and Orchestra by Leon Kirchner (b. 1919). Kirchner succeeded Walter Piston as the Walter Bigelow Rosen professor at Harvard University, and Ma was a student in his "Performance and Analysis" class in the early 1970s. The commission to write a work for Ma and the Philadelphia Orchestra was provided by funds from a gift given by orchestra patrons Maurice and Lillian Barbash, whose daughter had been a friend of Ma's at Harvard, on their 40th anniversary. Zinman conducted the premiere performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra on October 16, 1992.
The Violoncello Concerto The release of Premieres reflects Ma's continuing commitment to recording music of the 20th century, in a follow-up to his and Zinman's Grammy-winning 1993 collection

Phoenix, a small, resourceful U.S. label has brought them back into circulation to create a fine program of American violin sonatas. The Sonata No. 4 is probably the most engaging of Ives' four violin sonatas. And, while serious collectors of musical Americana will surely want to have the complete set (I recommend the outstanding version by Gregory Fulkerson and Robert Shannon on Bridge), this performance by Jaime Laredo and Ann Schein captures the music's clangorous rapture as well as any other. Lardeo's tone can be a bit gruff and rough-hewn, but that serves this music well. In fact, it adds some necessary grit to Copland's Violin Sonata, a beautiful work that is every bit the equal of the composer's far better known orchestral works. Surprisingly, this Sonata has been infrequently recorded; one might think that at least some of today's talented young would have added it to their discographies by now.

Extractions: Arabesque Z 6676 The concept album compiles pieces whose brief life together can seem, like some marriages, a mystery. The five pieces in Legacies qualify for this CD because each has roots in the past. Most musical pieces are melds of originality and influences, yet the pieces on this CD allegedly have more obvious origins. Some subtly use their legacies, others flaunt or satirize them. Dies Irae Stanley Silverman's In Celebration (1989) is an engaging classical/jazz cross-over. From its deceptively calm Introduction through its beboppy Kinematic, In Celebration is a sophisticated homage to jazz forms of the past seventy years. The Cantilena-Chaconne is languorous and sly, like an Eric Dolphy rift on saxophone. Jaime Laredo's violin strokes the listener with seductive tones, as if saying, "You like that, huh?" The final movement, Montuno (Rhythmic Song), erupts into a curious amalgam of salsa and spooky dissonance. It ends with a mysterious seven-note ascension on piano.
