Extractions: On January 24, 1969, Harvard Radio presented a four-hour orgy on tape of works by the Brooklyn-born Los Angeles-reared composer of Russian-Jewish descent, Leon Kirchner (pronounced "Kershner," not "Keerkhner"), in honor of his 50th birthday. In the succeeding three decades, his devoted former student at Mills College (where Kirchner had taught prior to coming to Harvard in 1961), the pianist Cheryl Seltzer, together with her co-director of Continuum, Joel Sachs, has presented three Kirchner concerts: at Columbia in 1977, at Alice Tully Hall in honor of his 70th birthday in 1989, and most recently at Merkin Hall, honoring his 80th this year. In her program notes, Seltzer asked rhetorically: "What forces in Kirchner and his music have attracted celebrity solo performers and music organizations small and large over the years?" In many ways the concert did provide "ample answer." Great Power in the Music There is great power in this music, which bespeaks a thorough assimilation of at least three admirable elements: the passionate intensity of Ernest Bloch, the intellectual rigor of Arnold Schoenberg, and the high-minded elegance of Roger Sessions, all of whom were Kirchner's teachers.

Extractions: The second year of "Decade by Decade," a joint project of the Madison Art Center and the Madison Symphony Orchestra, got underway with a fascinating conversation between MAC director Stephen Fleischman and MSO music director John DeMain about the art and music of the 1950's, illustrated with artworks from the museum's permanent collection and followed by a first-rate concert featuring the Pro Arte Quartet playing music composed in that decade. The basic premise of the series, strongly demonstrated by the six events so far offered, is that the different cultural trends prevalent as each decade has unrolled reflect the larger history of the 20th century. Last year's programs encompassed two world wars, incredible industrial and technological development, social changes of unprecedented magnitude and political realignments of major significance to the present and future of human cultures. The decade of the 50's was in both art and music a period of reaction to the disastrous Second World War, a global carnage that took as many as 50 million lives and caused a level of deprivation and destruction unique in the human experience. But it was also a decade of intense experimentation and development of new languages in both visual and musical arts.

Norbert Nozy conducting The Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides; Jean Leclercq, alto saxophone . RENÉ GAILLY CD87 037 [DDD]; 63:16. Produced by Ida Gotkovsky. (Distributed by Qualiton.) We have all had that rare feeling, hearing a work for the first time, that here is big-league music, by a heavyweight composer. The Concerto for Band by Ida Gotkovsky (b. 1933) strikes me that way; this is forceful, impetuous music, written in 1974 in an accessible yet suitably advanced and original style. It has a big, confident air about it, moving with the mighty strides of symphonies by Hindemith (the B-Flat, and the E-Flat) and Stravinsky (Symphony in Three Movements). The three movements are Lyrique, Expressif, and Obstiné; the first progresses from a violent opening to a calm close, the second works its way slowly to a lengthy, harsh climax and back again, and the finale bubbles with rhythmic excitement and glistening sonorities, whirling to a perpetual-motion coda which is cut short by one swift final chord. The saxophone concerto (1980) gets right down to business: after half a dozen loud boisterous chords, the soloist is off and running. In this virtuosic concerto, the soft smooth colors of the alto saxophone are contrasted with glaring grim tuttis. A nice touch is the pairing of solo instrument with other single winds in brief duets. Gotkovsky has the wit to end the opening Allegro con fuoco with a brief, quiet coda. In the Andante cantabile, the expected sweet song is crushed several times by stabbing, trilling chords from the full orchestra, but always emerges intact. A Presto finalethe longest movementis filled with dazzling passages for the soloist and explores many moods; this time Gotkovsky pulls out all the stops, as a wild cadenza leads to a
