New Page 1 joseph martin kraus (1756 1792). joseph martin kraus was almost anexact contemporary of Mozart. He was born in Miltenberg am Main http://www.btinternet.com/~llantilio/kraus.htm
Extractions: Joseph Martin Kraus Joseph Martin Kraus was almost an exact contemporary of Mozart. He was born in Miltenberg am Main, one of the most piously preserved German cities, but died in Stockholm. Although German by birth, his many years of activity in the milieu of Gustavian culture have allowed him to rank as a Swedish composer. Gustaf IIIs interest in the lyrical stage, above all in Glucks music-dramas, attracted numerous German composers to the Swedish Court; Kraus was the most outstanding among them and, as an eminent and versatile scholar, was accepted unreservedly in the Kings intimate circle, which included such names as Johan Henrik Kellgren, Carl Michael Bellman, and Anna Maria Lenngren. As early as 1779, he was elected a member of The Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm; in 1781 he became second conductor at Gustaf IIIs opera, and succeeded Francesco Uttini in 1788 as chief conductor. Between 1782-87 he travelled abroad by royal command, making the acquaintance of, among others, Haydn and Gluck. Although chiefly active as a conductor of opera, he was also able to find time for his own composition; his abundant production includes operas, ballets, theatre music, four symphonies, cantatas, songs and other vocal works, chamber music, and so on. The Third Act of his opera "Aeneas in Carthage" - composed between 1781-90, but first presented seven years after his death - was given in the autumn of 1971 at Drottningholms Theatre. His ballet "The Fishermen" was reconstructed some years ago by Mary Skeaping and Ivo Cramer, and would also be set up at the same theatre.
Extractions: Andantino from one of the Serenades... OVERALL NOISE RATING: 1 (A quiet and appreciative audience) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. Tickets for the Flying Inkpot was kindly sponsored by the Goethe Institute of Singapore. Special thanks goes to Stephanie and the Chinese lady at the reception. by Ng Yeuk Fan I must admit that I was still deciding whether to go or not... given that I was not a particular fan of Haydn, and that composers like Rosetti and Kraus were totally unknown to me. However, I knew that my 'companion' who had a special love for the horn would find the 'ancient' horns played without valves all the more fascinating. Further, I had earlier reviewed
