He studied music at the Royal Manchester College of Music and Manchester University. Together with Alexander Goehr, Harrison Birtwistle, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon he formed an ensemble called New Music Manchester ('The Manchester School') for contemporary compositions. His catalogue contains nearly 300 works in all genres. These include more than 60 orchestral scores, several stage works, choral, chamber and incidental music, there is a large body of educational material, designed for children of different ages, as well as many occasional pieces.

In these dances, we follow the fiddler Donald MacDonald, along with all the islanders, winding around the fields in an ancient Orkney musical blessing of the crops a Spell for Green Corn. Its moments of novelty did not obscure that fact that there was much serious intent behind the music. Its shifting moods, from plaintive lament to celebratory march, were registered in melodies derived from folk tunes, shadowed by quintessential Maxwell Davies harmonic, rhythmic and instrumental shadings. It was bold and overt, but also dark and subtle, and made characteristically effective use of instrumental pairings.

I attended this concert in the hope of overcoming my resistance to much of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' more recent music, only to find myself increasingly depressed by what I heard. Disconcertingly, there seemed to be an unbridgeable gulf between what we read and what we heard. For me the nadir was the new Horn Concerto, which seemed to be composed for a future CD, so inept was the concert hall balance. The strange, uningratiating sounds emerging from this subtle and least assertive of wind/brass instruments were often rendered nearly inaudible by the dense, turgid orchestration, like water absorbed by a sponge. Apparently Davies' method is derived from Magic Squares, an arcane compositional technique which I have not yet elucidated. I came away wishing one of us had tried Magic Mushrooms instead and decided I was not qualified to write about this music.
